Suddenly snatched from his own world, High School student
Yu finds himself forcibly enrolled in Night Raven College. It’s a school for the most elite of magic
users, only Yu has no idea how to use any magic. His arrival triggers an avalanche of
confusion and rage amongst the student bodies most top tier of users. And if
they don’t kill him first, Yu will have to survive the Monsters, Ghouls, Ghosts
and other dark magics waiting for him in this Twisted Neverland.
After years of hosting and distributing Anime films (mostly
from the Studio Ghibli catalogue), the House of Mouse seems looking to jump onto
the Anime bandwagon with their first Original Anime Series.
And wouldn’t you know it, it’s based on a
Mobile Game.
Yes, Disney Twisted
Wonderland was released in Japan back in 2020 and localized in the US in 2022.
From the looks of it, the game involves
Anime-ifications of some of Disney’s most legendary villains including The
Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Scar from The Lion King, Hades from
Hercules and Jafar from Aladdin, just to name a few…and they’re all super
attractive bishonen boys.
Ok, sounds
Anime enough but how is the actual premiere of the Anime?
Is it a good jumping on point or is this a bit
more Fate/GO and confusing as heck?
The answer for me is the latter.
Yu has a nice introduction as the kind and
friendly leader of his school Kendo Team.
But once he’s swept up into the titular Twisted Wonderland, confusion
sets in quick and Episode 1 has no intention of explaining jack.
Most of the second half of the premiere is
just cutting back to all the handsome Disney rogues with vacant or amused
experssions on their faces while Yu begs for any kind of explanation as to what
the hell is going on.
The prattling from
the Headmaster (I think), Dire Crowley, doesn’t help matter either as he seems
to enjoy speaking as if Yu knows what’s going on when clearly he doesn’t.
Yu’s a special case and for some reason, no
one seems to register that.
Heck, the
guy inspired by the Queen of Hearts is more pissed he doesn’t know what’s going
on and wants to kill Yu just for that.
Honestly, this is just like diving into Kingdom Hearts
III without having played any of he half dozen side games that came out after
Kingdom Hearts II and the show’s just trolling.
All of the beautiful people are reveling in the vast confusion (when
theyre not screaming about being almost burned to death by a Cat…Tanuki…no it’s
a Cat) brought on by Yu’s arrival and yet I could not commit a single persons
name to memory (or even heard them mentioned at all for that matter).
I’ll give credit where credit is due, the
character designs look cool and you can easily tell which Disney rogue inspired
them and the Houses of their school (btw Savanaclaw is a bad ass House
name).
But when you’re basically wasting
time on pretty visuals and character designs made to make the fan girls swoon,
sorry but those don’t make up for a lack of answering on simple little question…WHAT
THE F*** IS GOING ON!!!!????
What’s weirder to me is that this is clearly the starting
point of Twisted Wonderland.
Unlike most
of the Fate/GO Anime that have come out, we’re not being thrust into the midst
of an ongoing story without a recap to go with it.
As far as First Impressions go, the show
might look pretty but I was getting pretty irked just cutting back to random
faces and growls and wanted to throttle Queen of Hearts Boy for wanting to kill
Yu for just being around.
Ugh, this was
more frustrating than anything.
Maybe if
Disney had aired two episodes instead of one to kick off the series there might
be less frustration.
As it stands, I
think I’m gonna pass on Twisted Wonderland.
Besides if I wanna beat the mess out of Disney villains trolling my lack
of knowledge, there’s Kingdom Hearts for that.
