Well it’s that time of year again. As summer comes to a close, vacation is
pretty much done for students of all ages and a new school year dawns. New classes, more homework, afterschool
activities, you know how it all works. Of
course, that doesn’t mean returning students don’t have to skip out on Anime
breaks. When you think about it, a
school setting is as natural for an Anime as an Issekai realm or a Space Colony
for Gundam. So if you’re feeling a bit of the back to school blues, fear not,
there’s an Anime to help cure those blues.
These are my Top 5 Back to School Anime.
Let’s be honest, most Shonen Anime have some sort of
school or teaching component from the get go: Naruto-Ninja School, My Hero
Academia-School for Heroes; Jujutsu Kaisen-Sorcerer School. Not to mention the overabundance of Sports
Shonen titles set in high schools like Haikyuu.
These settings are a mainstay of the genre and let’s face it, theyre the
schools we all wish we could attend in real life. How cool would it be to learn how to vanish
like a Ninja, punch as hard as Superman or exorcise a monster straight from the
depths of hell. Seriously, sign anybody
up.
#4-Highschool of the Dead
When the Zombie Apocalypse suddenly breaks out, its time
to put the books away and enter the ultimate survival studies class. While it only stays in its titular High
School for the first couple of episodes, Highschool of the Dead is still a
proper education in dealing with hordes of the undead. From fashioning homemade weapons to
formulating battle tactics to mastering the deadliest of katanas, this show is
a handy dandy guide that provides the best answers to the age old question, “What’s
your Zombie plan?” Also the classmates
are all incredibly cute and kick some serious ass too.
#3-Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
One of the most unique aspects of the most recent TV
entry in the Gundam franchise is it’s school setting (initially anyway). At the Asticassia School of Technology, you don’t
just learn how to build and pilot your own Mobile Suit, there’s also courses
for navigating the hugely economics focused world of the Ad Stella Era. There
are even job fairs where you can find buyers to start your own business. But let’s be real, the big draw is being able
to settle disputes with fellow students in school sanctioned Mobile Suit duels,
either with one provided by the school or your own customized model.
#2-Free!
Ok so while I said most Sports Anime could fit into our
#5 slot, Free isn’t a Shonen Anime, it’s just sports so I’m marking it my #2 because
I love this show and it’s one of those shows that proves after school is worth the
grueling classes (as important as those are).
Free takes us on the journey of several young men as they seek to exceed
their already natural talents as swimmers but also takes time to focus on what
they might want to do once they leave the comfy confines of their High School
or College. This show is funny and
heartwarming but also pushes its core cast to their physical and emotional
limits, so much so you cant help but cheer for them and hope they win their
race or personal trials. Also, kick ass
and beautifully animated swim races from Kyoto Animation don’t hurt either.
Of all the school centric titles I can think of, this is
the most feel good one of them all. The
Light Music Club isn’t just all about creating the perfect ear infectious
jams. Most of the groups best days come
when theyre just hanging out and getting into all sorts of schenanigans. Beach trips, scoping out a music shop for new
instruments, chilling out at a friends to help them study. With Yui, Ritsu, Mio Mugi and Azusa, life is
never boring and everyday is a brand new adventure. But yes, the incredibly awesome soundtrack
they churn out over the course of the series and movie is easily one of the
best in all of Anime too.
