Fed up with the continuous failures of the Amazon Trio,
Madame Zarconia reveals the truth of their existence and wants that if they
fail again, they’ll return to their original forms. Faced with their end, the Trio risks it all
on one last stage and this time they have the advantage: they know Usagi is
Sailor Moon and that Pegasus is hiding in Chibiusas dreams. Even if the Sailor Senshi can defeat them,
the dark ruler, Queen Nahalennia, and a new quartet of terrifying terrors are
ready to take the stage next should the Amazon Trio fail.
It hardly feels like a win for Sailor Moon SuperS that
the Amazon Trio have finally been retired.
A true “win” would have been those three being taken care of 5-10
episodes into the season.
Instead,
SuperS stretched their cringy worthy schtick to 21 episodes and its been a
strain to get through it all.
Hell, I’ve
contemplated actually skipping entire episodes altogether because of how bad
this season has been since the get to.
This “important” episode set didn’t change my mind even if it reset the
board for the back 16 episodes of Sailor Moon Super S to come.
I’ll talk more about the Amazoness Quartet
later on but right now, let’s discuss the end of the Amazon Trio and why I’m
not sorry to see any of them go.
From their invading people private dreams (which looks
way too painful, it might as well be something far crueler and darker), to
breaking hearts left, right and center and even poaching on underage kids,
there is nothing about any of the Amazon Trio that’s been likeable since they
arrived on the scene.
Even when the
seasons attempted to play them seriously, it comes off as anything but.
These three were always a joke and were
mostly played for laughs until their last couple of episodes, and I rarely ever
found them funny…actually not rarely, I never found them funny.
And as is tradition with Sailor Moon Villains
at crucial points in any season, SuperS tried to give the Trio a redemption arc
of some kind…and I just said “no” to that.
After everything they’ve done, to give them a pass because the SuperS
suddenly wants me to take them seriously and sympathize with their true tragic
origins? Nope.
This is Prince Demande
all over again.
You don’t get to play
the creepy stalker/predator and suddenly earn redemption just like that.
Had Tigers Eye, Fishs Eye and Hawks Eye been
written better…maybe?
But as it stands,
it’s too little, too late for me to even start caring about the outcome of
their story.
It wasn’t earned and it
felt just as empty and pointless like the rest of SuperS has been.
And don’t think I’m just picking on those three
either.
I’ve had a problem with how
everyone has been treated in SuperS.
Mako became the latest victim of character assassination as she fell for
Tigers Eye at a dance and risked her health and safety to stay out all night
waiting for him to come back from dancing with dozens of girls just because she
thought he was her true love…WHAT?!
I
cant believe how being so boy crazy has made the Senshi so…so…not
themselves.
I mean it makes sense for
Minako but Mako has a better head on her shoulders than that.
Also, why the hell don’t the girls recognize
any of the Amazon Trio by now?
At least
their previous adversaries attempted to disguise themselves.
Tigers Eye and Hawks Eye hardly ever try when
they go out in public and lets not forget that Minako thought she could try and
date both simultaneously.
Fishs Eye has
a bit more of an excuse because of he dresses like a girl and can pull off the
look well.
But how the heck am I
actually writing that Mamoru of all people is acting the most sane of anyone
this season when he puts Fishs Eye in his place when he’s very upfront about
not wanting to be with anyone except Usagi, no matter how desperate Fishs Eye
is?
This really is the worst season of
Sailor Moon, holy crap.
Surprisingly, and thankfully, with the Amazon Trio off
the stage, a new set of baddies is stepping in and they do show promise.
Turns out, old Zarconia isn’t the true leader
of the Dead Moon Circus…or maybe she is but she isn’t the big bad.
That title goes to Queen Nahalennia (I’m
gonna be copying and pasting that name with every review because man that is a
hard name to spell).
This self
proclaimed “True Queen of the Moon” is trapped in a mirror dimension and needs
Pegasus’ power to break out.
Her
character model kind of reminds me of Luna’s human form from the Sailor Moon S
Movie, except, you know, evil.
What’s
her story and why is she trapped there?
We’ll probably find out but the real new starts are the Amazoness
Quartet and theyre already making a bigger mark in one episode than the trio
ever in 21 of them.
Not only are these
four cynical circus performers younger foes than what we’ve seen before,
they’re clearly in a class of their own, even being a partial match for
Zarconia.
And they’re so arrogant and
confident in their own abilities theyre already talking about capturing Pegasus
for themselves.
Curiously, Zarconia is
aware of this and has her doubts about using these four wild cards.
But what Queen Nahalennia says goes, I guess.
Still, it’s nice to see that the Senshi have a team of
bad girls to match up with again…too bad their first encounter with them has
most of the Senshi doing absolutely nothing.
That’s another thing I’m sick of with SuperS.
Most of the Seasons fight scenes have hardly
featured the entire Sailor Senshi team.
It’s been all Usagi and Chibiusa focused and those fights have usually
had them being bemused by a Lemures’ Circus Act before running around like
chickens with their heads cut off trying not to die.
Eventually, Chibiusa uses the absolutely
pointless “Twinkle Yell” summon to bring Pegasus in for no reason other than
the juice up Usagi so she can deliver the finishing blow.
Rarely have Rei, Minako, Ami or Mako ever
been needed or done anything other than transform and just be there.
Even when they’ve had episodes where they are
the main focus, none of the girls partake in most fights so Usagi and Chibiusa
can get all the action.
Has this show
forgotten this series is at its best when Usagi is relying on the power of her
friends to win?
I really hope having the
Amazoness Quartet (I’m just gonna call them AQ for short), can shake things up
for the better or at least give Rei and the others more to do besides be
unneeded.
Sailor Moon SuperS has hit a crucial point with me.
There’s only two ways the season can go now
with the change in status quo.
It can
either go the Gundam ZZ route and get its act together in the last 16
episodes…or it goes the Gundam Seed Destiny route and earns itself something starting
around 3/10 at this point, maybe even lower.
My expectations for a season of Sailor Moon have never been this low and
it only makes me angrier to think that.
I love this show and I love what it’s done with its amazing cast…in the
first three seasons.
This is clearly the
season no one cared so long as they probably just stalled for time for Sailor
Stars.
Hopefully the new bad girls can
turn things around when we come back to Sailor Moon SuperS on Monday, right
here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
