Sailor Moon SuperS Part 3 Episodes 136-140

Love is in the air for Usagi and friends.  From Chibiusa’s continuing interactions with Pegasus to Yuichiro believing he has a rival for Rei’s affections, romance seems to be in full bloom and it’s proving to be the perfect lure for the minions of the Dead Moon Circus.  From an aspiring artist to a girl who would be Samurai to an up and coming fashion designer, no one seems to be safe from these Dream invading thieves…and only Sailor Moon and the Sailor Senshi can stop them.

Incase anyone might’ve forgotten (or just isn’t aware), the original 90s Sailor Moon Anime is 200 episodes long, across five seasons.  Plenty of it is filler and throughout the first three seasons, some of it has been pretty decent, if not some of the best episodes of the series.  This is not the case for Sailor Moon SuperS, which already feels like its destined to be the Filler Season of an already long Anime.  These latest five episodes could even themselves be filler episodes but can they really be called this in a season chalk full of them?

The problem with this set more than anything is how repetitive this season has become, so much so I’m basically complaining about the same things over and over again with very little variation.  Usagi continues to devolve as a character, getting jealous or angry whenever any of her friends are super close to Mamoru.  Normally I’d say that seeing Usagi dressed as a ninja is full of funny possibilities.  But when she’s doing this because Mamoru is forced to stay at Rei’s for a night and she thinks Rei will make a move on him…has she forgotten Rei gave up on Mamoru forever ago?  Usagi’s becoming so Mamoru crazy it’s frustrating (I already hate Mamrou enough).  Honestly, it’s not like the rest of the Senshi feel much different.  Sure Rei, Ami, Mako and Minako are all much more saner than Usagi but none of them are even remotely concerned with the fact that the Dead Moon Circus is still running amok in their town.  Everyones just going about their lives as if nothings wrong and theyre gushing over clothes and boys.  Do I think the girls deserve some downtime, absolutely but maybe deal with the immediate threat first, even if “threat” can hardly describe the Dead Moon Circus right now.

By this point in Season One, the Senshi were still being assembled but they were chipping away at the Dark Kingdom.  By this point in Season Two, we we’re out of the Makai Tree bs and starting to get into the mystery of Chibi Usa and the Black Moon Clan.  And Season Three there was hardly any rest when the Death Busters were around.  Season Four…we’re still in a holding pattern on everything from Pegasus to the Dead Moon Circus.  What is Pegasus?  Who knows, he’s still chatting with Chibiusa and suddenly appearing when she summons him to power up herself and Sailor Moon.  Why is the Dead Moon Circus so interested in him?  No idea, the Amazon Trio are still picking pictures at a bar and attacking whoever they think is pretty enough to harbor a good dream.  In short, we’re 13 episodes in and literally nothing has freaking happened.  Like I said above, even the Sensi don’t seem super concerned with the new threat in town…goes to show how low on threat meter the Dead Moon Cirius really is.

There’s no real urgency to dealing with Dead Moon Circus and nothings been done to change that…save for continuing to make the Amazon Trio the most uncomfortable group of adversaries (seriously, youre preying on Widows and small children now, sickos).  The only change in their gameplay is that Fish’s Eye finally got off the bench to do something rather than sit at the bar and chastise his comrades for their poor taste in everything.  And yes, you did read that correctly, Fish’s Eye is a man and interesting, he’s probably the most efeminite man of the series to date, his gender even comes up when he bewitches a fashion designer and doesn’t care that Fish’s Eye is a man.  That deserves cudos…too bad Fish’s Eye in the long run is just as useless and wasted as the other two Amazon Cronies.

While I feel like I’m experiencing a rewatch of Gundam ZZ (which hopefully means the back half of SuperS will more than make up for this slough fest), there were a couple of things I did like in this set.  We got what’s probably one of my favorite Stand Alone episode ever in the entire series, centered on a young girl named Miharu who longs to be a Samurai like her mother.  Miharu’s character design is adorable and her gusto and spirit were a much needed breath of fresh air in this stinker of a season.  She even managed to get in there and help the Sensi deal with the Monster of the Week.  Seriously, I could watch a short spin off series with this girl going on crazy adventures and battling Monsters.  Best of all, this was the first episode to show more of the Usagi I’ve come to love again.  She was greatly concerned for Miharu’s lack of parental support and didn’t hesitate to confront her mother about Miharu’s poor treatment.  But Usagi managed to see through things and help pave the way for Miharu to get her win in against their Monster and even her mother. THAT’S the Usagi I know: the one who isn’t concerned her friends are gonna steal Mamoru from her and is more the defender of the weak than a spoiled brat (though that occasionally still happens but in more entertaining ways.  Also, while it was a brief, my man Yuichiro returned for an episode and got to stick it to Mamoru when he thought he had a rival for Rei’s affections.  Rest assured, Yuichiro, you’ve got nothing to worry about dude.

Still, one good episode and the return of a personal favorite character feels like a minor victory as Sailor Moon SuperS continues to be a trial to sit through.  The show seems to be in no hurry to deal with the mystery of Pegasus OR the threat of the Dead Moon Circus (or lack thereof)).  Part of me just wants to skip the rest of this season altogether and go right to Sailor Moon Sailor Stars and forget this Season ever happened (something tells me the show will do that last part all on its own).  But, I sat through the first half of Gundam ZZ and I sat through ALL of Gundam Seed Destiny and Reconguista in G…sigh, the things I do for my favorite Anime.  We’re back at it again on Monday with more Sailor Moon SuperS right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.  See ya then.
