Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans Part 9 Episodes 41-45

The time of revolution is at hand.  As Tekkadan seeks revenge against the man who crushed Naze and the Turbines, McGillis finally enacts his Coup d’etat on Earth against Gjallarhorn and the Seven Stars.  With all ties to Teiwaz cut, Orga goes all in to assist McGillis, who seems so assured of his victory.  However, that’s when an old friend returns to challenge McGillis’ claim and reveal his crimes to the world.  The tide is changing and with it comes a storm even Orga, Mikazuki and Tekkadan cant stand against.  Is this the beginning of the end?

So…yeah…Tekkadan’s in trouble, like big trouble…like come the finale we’re looking at a Zeta or Victory Gundam level body count for the central cast.  Everything I kind of predicted for this pivotal set came to pass.  While I’m glad the boys did get revenge for Naze, Amida and Lafter, they’re still in way too deep thanks to Orga blindly thinking McGillis could make good on any of his lofty promises.  Actually, if it weren’t for the fact that we have five episodes left to go, the end of this set couldve been the end of the series.  Makes me wonder if an even crueler fate awaits Orga, Mika and the others once they get their asses back to Mars.

But before we talk about how everythings gone to hell, let’s talk about how sweet it was to see Jasley fail so epically.  The guys had it out for Tekkadan from the get go and now we learn he had McMurdo in his sights as well.  Guys ambitions were as high as McGillis’ but Jasley lacked any of McGillis charms and even less than half of his brains.  Just what did he think was gonna happen when he had Lafter assassinated (at a Build a Bear workshop no less)?  Well, he wanted Tekkadan to fight and damn did Jasley get what he asked for…just not how he wanted it.  The battle with Jasley’s faction also saw the debut of the Barbatos Lupus Rex and it’s a fitting final form for Mikazuki’s Gundam.  Bearing claw, a tail whip, and an even bigger mace, this is the most feral I’ve ever seen a Gundam and its only got one purpose: to smash anything that gets in its way…something Jasley saw first hand when Orga and McMurdo left him to die by Mikazuki’s hand.  Kind of wish Akihiro had gotten the killing blow though because of the last moments he and Lafter had.

Back in Season One, I admired what they did with McGillis pilling on the wit and charm of Char Aznable to maneuver his way to the top of Gjallarhorn, double crossing those who trusted him all for the sake of settling an old score.  We learned just how messed up McGillis really is, least of all being his sexual abuse at the hands of the Head of the Fareed family.  His need for revenge is totally understandable after that.  However…unlike Char, McGillis buried his head so far into romanticizing the founder of Gjallarhorn and the history of the Calamity War that he basically banked all of his chances for success on all of Gjallarhorn and the Seven Stars bowing to him once he unearthed the first Gundam piloted by Gjallarhorn’s founder, the Gundam Bael.  Wow…I almost hate to say it but McGillis was kind of a dumbass in the end and now everyone is going to pay for his crimes.

And while Rustal had been outmaneuvering him thanks to help from Gaelio, who finally took off the damn mask and confronted the man who scarred him, it was the Seven Stars themselves who sealed torpedoed McGillis’ plans.  It makes sense that if they couldn’t stand against him, they didn’t have to stand with him, taking a stance of neutrality and being more than happy to watch McGillis squirm a bit.  Truth be told, it was good to see Gaelio back sans disguise.  It makes me wonder if this whole scenario was based on a “What If…” idea from the original series where Garma Zabi somehow survived his assassination attempt on Earth and got to fight Char again down the line.  Gaelio isn’t the worst guy in the entire series, dude even apologized to Mikazuki for chastising him for using the Alaya-Vijnana.  Oh and it looks like I was part right about Ein.  Dude is dead but his mind is now part of a psudeo Alaya-Vijnana system installed on the Gundam Vidar, allowing Gaelio to go toe to toe with even Mikazuki and the Barbatos Lupus Rex.  Equal truth, considering Tekkadan’s days are numbered thanks to McGillis, I’m perfectly ok with Gaelio getting another shot to take him down.

Which lead us into space where Tekkadan and McGillis’ faction made a final stand against Rustal and his Fleet.  I’m surprised that we only lost Shino in this battle but man it didn’t feel like that was going to be the case.  By that I mean, this was such an overwhelming and hopeless battle I kept thinking this could be the final episode that saw all of Tekkadan go down in a tragic blaze.  Orga getting to punch McGillis was totally warranted.  Sure, Tekkadan wasn’t going leave him high and dry but boy did Orga back the wrong horse.  And now, like McGillis, Orga was paying for lots of his decisions big time.  It also sucks that, much like Naze and Amida, Shino’s parting shot didn’t get anyone of consequence.  Rustal and Iok are still around and Tekkadan might be on their way home but they’ve lost another of their most important members.  Man this show is unfair…good and heavy…but still unfair.

Feel like I’ve been doing this with a few reviews now but I like having an Odds and Ends section to focus on separate characters and plots in quicker detail, gonna keep that trend going here.  Atra and Mika admitted their feelings for one another…awwww.  They’d better get to work quick on that baby though.  It’s both great and a little irritating to see Mikazuki being so comforting and open with Atra and yet still be the freaking Terminator everywhere else.  It’s a see saw effect with his development I suppose.  Apparently Iok has a fan club that wants him back in action despite all the crap he’s pulled…how?  Did anyone not see how much of a deluded idiot he was on Mars?  Julieta and Gaelio clearly did and even Rustal knows he’s an idiot.  Sigh, come on IBO.  You gave us justice for Naze by getting rid of Jasley.  The least you can do is let Iok meet a humiliating end in the finale.  And can we give Yamagi a hug?  Poor guy never got a chance to tell Shino how he truly felt about him but I wonder if, on some level, Shino always knew, guess we’ll never know.

Oh man, tomorrow we reach the finale and it is going to be so rough, probably one of the roughest Gundam Finale’s I’ve ever had to sit through.  I’m sure it’ll be one for the ages though.  Plus, despite the character flaws this show is sooooo much better than G Reco, so it’ll probably end better too.  Check back tomorrow for the sure to be epic Series Finale of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
