Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

It is a time of great calamity.  An Azumi Priestess has a vision of the destruction of a city.  At the same time, Godzilla seemingly attacks his allies in brutal fashion.  A team of scientists and archeologists begin looking into the matter only to discover a new threat to the planet.  Godzilla himself finds his true equal in a robotic duplicate that might just surpass him in everyway.  Together with the Guaridan kaiju King Caeser, Godzilla must summon all of his powers and more to stop this mechanical terror before it destroys the world.

We come to the end of Godzilla Month with the debut of yet another of Godzilla’s most recognizable foes.  Yeah, it would seem kind of easy and obvious to do a robotic replica of the King of the Monsters (particularly when you think about how it would no doubt inspire Power Rangers down the road).  Thankfully, while most of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla still retains the usual negatives that drag down a Godzilla movie, the debut of Mechagodzilla himself isn’t one of them.  In fact he’s a highlight, along with another monster debut that sadly should have happened in its own film.

Final Impact-An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special (Part 14)

Previously:
Just go read Part One right here: The Gundam Anime Corner: Final Impact-An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special (Part 13) (gundamanimeblog.blogspot.com)…oh ok fine, if you don’t want to: Shinji got back in the game and took on several Mass Produced Evas to protect Asuka but ended up being captured and used to kick off Third Impact anyway.  Meanwhile, Gendo thought he had won the day but a farewell bullet from Ritsuko and Rei seizing his Adam Embryo (wow that sounded grosser than I intended) and rising up to meet Shinji for the big end of the world event.  Final Impact has reached Third Impact and the final act of the Evangelion Manga.  Shall we?

Final Impact-An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special (Part 13)

Previously:
NERV found itself under an attack it was doomed to fail against.  Gendo revealed his plans to become God to get revenge on God because he’s Gendo Ikari and surprising no one, he admitted he hates Shinji and always has.  Meanwhile, Asuka got back into the fight against crazed looking Eva’s and Misato saved Shinji’s life at the cost of her own, though she got some bad guys in the process.  Now Shinji stands ready to protect Asuka and fight some terrifying Mass Produced Evangelions.  It’s Part One of this double sized finale to Final Impact: An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special.  I’m ready, you ready?  Let’s roll.

FIF#146-Gundam: Reconguista in G

It is the year 1014 of the Reguild Century.  Over a millennia has passed since the close of the Universal Century.  Following centuries of turmoil and chaos, Humanity has finally found a measure of peace and prosperity in this new era.  Bellri Zenam emerges as one of its newest defenders, tasked with protecting an orbital elevator that the world relies on for energy.  During Bellri’s first sortie, the tower is attacked by Pirates with a mysterious Mobile Suit, the G-Self.  This is only the beginning of a strange journey for Bellri as he meets the beautiful pilot Aida Rayhunton and learns he is one of only a handful of people who can pilot the G-Self.  The eras may have changed, but once more a Gundam chooses a young man to protect the future.

I’ve always said that I feel it is my destiny, having a blog with the title “Gundam” in it, to review just about everything Gundam in existence and I’ve done a pretty good job over the last seven years I think.  There’s plenty still left to review, including what I have planned for December.  But come 2022, there are only a small batch of shows left in the Gundam franchise left for me to take a look at.  One of those is my First Impression today, Reconguista in G.  Now, this isn’t one of Gundam’s most beloved entries, in fact I hear it’s one of the worst.  Most of the complaints I’ve heard stem from G Reco being a confusing mess with little clarity.  And judging from the first episode…they may be right about that.

Cowboy Bebop (2021 Live Action TV Series)

2071 AD.  Mankind has colonized the Solar System thanks to warp gates across the cosmos.  With this expansion, crime runs rampant and even the Police are stretched thin.  Spike Spiegel, Jet Black and Faye Valentine are Bounty Hunters.  Their mission: track down the worst of the worst and get them of the streets in exchange for a tiny profit.  Each has their own baggage and hangups, some worse than others.  But with rival Bounty Hunters, even more dangerous Bounty Heads and the ruthless steel of the Syndicate all in their way, Spike, Jet and Faye will have to find a way to work together as a team to get rich…or risk getting dead themselves.

Live Action Adaptations of any kind are tricky, no matter the subject.  If you try to work too little into your project, it’ll show a lack of trust in the material.  You work in too much, you might run the risk of overcompensating for a lack of proper understanding of the material.  The latest Netflix attempt to bring Anime to life, Cowboy Bebop, comes with a lot of heavy expectation.  Cowboy Bebop is one of the most universally beloved titles in the genre, one that both casual and hardcore Anime fans alike can enjoy.  And despite it being an Anime, there are times where Cowboy Bebop transcended the genre and felt more like watching an action packed scifi movie week after week, hence it’s popularity beyond love of the medium.  The Netflix series has a wealth of material to work with but in the end has no idea what it wants to do so it just throws in everything it can to hopefully appease the fans.  Thus, it falls into that latter category I mentioned: doing too much and in doing so showing the people behind the scenes don’t know what makes Bebop, Bebop and instead hope all the Easter Eggs, replica costumes and familiar music will do the job for them.

T5W#328-Top 5 Anime/Video Game Influences in Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

A couple of weeks ago, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrived on Disney+.  Getting a chance to watch it again for the first time since I saw it in theaters, I’ve gotta say, I freaking love this movie.  It stands as an excellent showcase of Asian culture and boasts some great action, energy and just a sense of fun that makes it one of the best movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Watching it this time, as well, I started to notice a couple of familiar elements peppered throughout the movie.  It’s kind of obvious in retrospect (I was enjoying the film too much to look too deeply I guess) but there are a ton of Anime and Video Game influences to spot and today I’m gonna shout out what I saw.  These are my Top 5 Anime/Video Game Influences in Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.  Word of warning, I will be talking about some major plot points so if you haven’t seen the movie and still want to be surprised, go check out Shang Chi right away and enjoy the ride.

Godzilla vs. Gigan

This week we take a look at the debut of one of Godzilla’s more recognizable foes. And while Gigan might be a force to be reckoned with, while also possessing one of the best monster designs in the franchise, his first battle with the King of the Monsters is weighed down by the usual riff raff that makes me wonder if the Transformers movies tend to follow similar templates: aka little monster action until the final act while following crappy human stories.

When a struggling Manga artist gets a job designing monsters for the forthcoming World Children’s Land, he gets caught up in an intergalactic conspiracy.  Creatures from another world, disguised as humans, threaten peace with destruction as they summon two Space Monsters to wreck havoc across Japan.  Once more, Godzilla enters the fray to face his oldest foe, King Ghidorah, and his newest enemy: the fearsome Gigan.

Gundam Month Mark V-THE GAUNTLET PART 2 Announcement

Well, Dear Readers, we’re nearing the end of the year 2021.  Every Christmas I always try to have something special ready for the holidays, a treat I’ve been saving for my favorite time of the year.  In the past, that honors kind of gone to a special First Impression Friday feature where I cover the first episodes of Gundam centric shows I haven’t reviewed yet, known as FIF: GundamCember.  Well I ran out of first episodes to cover a couple of years back and 2020 was a mess of a year that gave me a lot of time to watch more Gundam.  Which brings us to here and now, what I have in store for December 2021.  The answer, Dear Readers, is another double whammy.  Last Christmas I covered Mobile Suit Gundam AGE and After War Gundam X back to back (along with Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight Axis just cause).  This year: we’re back at it again, only this time, its two Gundam series that are closely connected to one another.  The last time I attempted this endevour, it was with Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny and it was kind of a “gauntlet” to get through.  Well, it’s time for another round.  My Dear Readers, this Christmas comes the sequel I’ve been planning for over a year now (and originally this was going to be covered back during the summer before Otakon).  It’s time for GUNDAM MONTH MARK V-THE GAUNTLET PART 2!!!!!

Final Impact-An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special (Part 12)

Previously:
Kwaoru outed himself as an Angel and attempted to start Third Impact before a last minute realization ended up being his downfall.  Now with all the Angels gone, SEELE’s ready to enact its plans for Third Impact and NERV is set to be its sacrificial lambs.  With Rei a whole different person, Asuka still in a coma and Shinji so emotionally broken down he’s hiding under some steps while NERV is being massacred…well it’s The End of Evangelion.  And Final Impact is ready to cover it all (or at least what’s covered in Volume 12).  Let’s continue, shall we?

FIF#145-Cowboy Bebop (2021 Live Action Series)

2071 AD.  Humanity has colonized the solar system and crime runs rampant, bad enough even the police need some help.  Spike Spiegel and Jet Black are bounty hunters looking to keep the engines running and the lights on aboard their ship, The Bebop.  But being a Bounty Hunter in this day and age isn’t easy; not when you have beautiful rivals, insane targets and the deadly guns of the Syndicate all standing in the way of a big score.  And that’s all before the troubled past of Spike returns with a vengeance to wreck havoc on his present. It's a dangerous life...but it can be a little fun too.

Well it’s here at last.  After a year long delay due to John Cho getting injured doing stunts and COVID-19, Netflix’s next attempt at a live action Anime project has arrived and expectations could not be higher for this one.  Cowboy Bebop is, to this day, universally praised by casual viewers and Anime fans alike.  It’s smart and adult scifi storytelling, cool cast of characters and that unforgettable score have made Bebop a staple of the genre and one that many have wanted to see get the live action treatment for a long time.  But we’ve been here before: an adaptation looks promising only to fall flat on its face for either not appretiating the source material or trying to lean into one end of said material without understanding the whole of what makes it good.  So, after checking out the first episode, where does Cowboy Bebop fall in that confusing statement I just made?

T5W#327-Top 5 Coolest Spike Moments in Cowboy Bebop

Spike Spiegel.  He is one of the coolest characters in all of Anime, maybe even the coolest.  From his hair, to that fashionable suit, to his laidback personality to his proficiency in Bruce Lee’s own Jeet Kun Do, Spike is the guy we all wish we were in life…right down to the dark past with a beautiful woman and a bestie with a love for Samurai Swords.  Even if you don’t think Spike is the coolest bad ass around, one thing is certain: Cowboy Bebop does not work without him.  So, to close out this little Cowboy Bebop centric series of Top 5s before the Netflix series drops on Friday, let’s take a look at some of Spikes own greatest hits across all of Bebop (TV Series and Movie included).  These are my Top 5 Coolest Spike Moments in Cowboy Bebop.

Invasion of the Astro Monster

When a pair of astronauts make first contact on Planet X, the last thing they expect is to be caught up in a battle between giants.  Planet X finds itself ravaged by the intergalactic menace known to them as Monster Zero, better known to the Earth as King Ghidorah.  The Xiliens plead for the humans to allow them to bring to their planet the only force capable of stopping Ghidorah: Godzilla and Rodan.  While they promise an end to all human disease in return, the true intentions of the Xiliens might be something far more sinister.

Now we’re getting into some of the stuff most Godzilla movies are best known for besides the monster battles: Alien Secret Invasions, Happy Victory Dances and Monster Mind Control.  Indeed Invasion of the Astro Monster is the birthplace of many familiar Godzilla tropes.  And yet despite this, and a more reduced role than usual for the King of the Monsters, this isn’t a bad outing for the old school Monsterverse, or at least it justifies its silliness enough to be a fun flick.

Final Impact-An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special (Part 11)

Previously:
Rei Ayanami sacrificed herself to save Shinji’s life…and Kwaoru was just like “eh oh well, Hey Shinji you can be with me forever now.”  Shinji’s retort aside, he ran back to Rei as soon as he heard she was still alive…only to learn it wasn’t his Rei and Ritsuko had a ton of Rei’s to show to him and Misato before making sure Rei III is the last Rei.  Guess we didn’t touch on that latter bit so much because A. nothing really changed from the Anime and B. the Kwaoru stuff has me really irked.  Well, time to get back to Final Impact: An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special and wrap up Kwaoru’s storyline in what could be a make or break moment for the Manga for me.

FIF#144-Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple

15 year old Kenichi Shirahama has been bullied for most of his life.  But he’s always vowed to get stronger and stand up to his abusers…except he’s a total wuss with little fighting potential.  That is, until he meets the beautiful transfer student Miu Furiniji, who offers Kenichi the chance he’s been looking for.  She brings him to her home, Ryōzanpaku, home to an elite band of Martial Arts Masters.  If Kenichi can master the styles of each warrior, he might very well become their Mightiest Disciple…or there’s a far better chance he’ll not survive the experience.  If Kenichi needs anything, it’s a mountain of good luck.

Anime based on Shonen Manga are a strange game.  In the early to mid 2000s, it feels like every studio wanted to adapt one to capitalize on the success of Shonen Anime like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach and Dragon Ball Z.  All of those shows have plenty in common from character tropes to story beats to action set pieces.  So unless it’s one of those aforementioned four titles, Shonen Anime tend to blend together and hardly stand apart, kind of like Mecha Anime in the 80’s.  I bring all of this up because just thinking about that makes me think there’s nothing about Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple that stands out in its first episode save for how similar it looks to other titles at the time such as Getbackers, Tenjou Tenge and Bamboo Blade…and some of those titles are a lot more entertaining.

T5W#326-Top 5 Yoko Kanno OSTs

She is the undisputed Queen of Anime OSTs, an artist who’s craft spans across multiple genres and has continually improved over time.  She is such a hot commodity that Netflix has wisely chosen to seek her services for their upcoming Live Action Adaptation of a certain Anime she’s quite famous for scoring.  Her name is Yoko Kanno and I cannot believe I’ve gone more than 300 Top 5 Lists without giving one to her.  Today that changes.  As part of my countdown to Cowboy Bebop, today we’re looking at the Top 5 Yoko Kanno OSTs.  Chances are you know what the top pick will be but please read on still, I’m sure I can recommend another amazing score that you’ll never forget once you’ve heard it.

Mothra vs. Godzilla

An enormous egg washes ashore in Japan following a devastating typhoon.  As many seek financial gain from its existence, a pair of tiny messengers plead for the eggs return to its mother: Mothra.  Things become even more dire when Godzilla awakens from his slumber and threatens the destruction of Japan once again.  The only hope is for Humanity to seek Mothra’s aid.  But if they continue to refuse returning her egg, will Mothra leave Humanity to its final fate?

We’re still in early days for Godzilla with this, the fourth film in the franchise, Mothra vs. Godzilla.  We’re not even at the point where Godzilla gets top billing in fights yet.  Still, much of this movie is very much a Mothra film.  Naturally it’s because of the success of the Mothra films that we even got this epic mash up between these two Japanese legends.  While I’m not surprised the Mothra side of this movie shines, it’s the Godzilla portions that is surprisingly the weakest…and to be honest, that’s just weird.

Final Impact-An Evangelion Gundam Anime Corner Special (Part 10)

Previously:
Kwaoru Nagisa arrived far sooner than expected…and he’s kind of an asshole.  Still, he slotted into Asuka’s spot after an Angel put her in a coma and Shinji’s trying to make it clear to Kwaoru he wants nothing to do with him (Kwaoru did kill a kitten in his first scene with him and that should raise a mountain of red flags there).  Right now though, Shinji’s got a lot more to worry about with Rei’s life hanging in the balance.  Let’s get back to Final Impact and see what changes lie in store next.

FIF#143-Eden’s Zero

Since he was a child, Shiki Granbell has been raised amongst the machines of the planet Granbell.  One day, a beautiful girl named Rebecca Bluegarden and her companion Happy arrive and offer Shiki the adventure of a lifetime: not just away from the capital of Granbell, but in the stars above.  The three begin a search for  a fabled intergalactic Goddess known only as “Mother.”  But to do that, they’ll need a vessel capable of a long voyage.  Thankfully, Shiki’s guardian left him such a vessel.  The Eden’s Zero is ready to fly and the galaxy is open for Shiki, Rebecca and Happy to explore to their hearts content.

A few years back, Fairy Tail was a Shonen Title poised to rival the likes of the legendary Big Three (Naruto, One Piece and Bleach).  It never made it to those heights but was still a beloved title.  I watched a lot of it and enjoyed what I saw.  So imagine my confusion when I see a poster for Eden’s Zero and see some very familiar faces and think at first it’s a continuation or a prequel to Fairy Tail.  Wrong on both assumptions.  Eden’s Zero is a brand new tale from Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima that trades Fantasy lands for the sea of stars.  However, if you went by the first episode alone you wouldn’t know that last bit until the very end.

Godzilla: Singular Point Part 3 Episodes 9-13

The Catastrophe has begun.  Godzilla evolves into his ultimate form, turning Tokyo into a red dust covered Hell Scape.  With his AI installed into Jet Jaguar, Yun and the rest of the Otaki Factory team ride out to try and stop his rampage.  But the real hope for stopping the chaos lies in the hands of Mei Kamina, who discovers the source of the Singular Point and its connection to the past and the future.  Against a literal destroyer of worlds, is there any chance of stopping Godzilla?

I don’t even know where to begin expressing my disappointment with this one.  I guess I should be a little grateful that in 13 episodes of endless theoretical debates about exotic particles, the space time continuum and predicting the future, we got at least a couple good minutes of solid Godzilla action.  Other than that, Godzilla: Singular Point pretty much settles on what it’s been since the beginning and refuses to budge even a little on it.  Even when we do get to some truly epic moments thanks to quality animation, its barely the main focus.  No, this Anime has been about one thing: The Lecture.  This is almost the reverse of the Planet of the Monsters Trilogy, just with more likeable characters and a less nihilistic tone…but ultimately a major disappointment nonetheless.

Godzilla: Singular Point Part 2 Episodes 5-8

The flock of Rodan and the red dust brought with it was only just the beginning.  What was once contained to Japan is beginning to spread across the globe and other Monsters are joining the fray.  Yun and the Otaki Factory team take to the front lines when the armored Angirus appears along with the sea fairing Manda.  Meanwhile, Mei joins a coalition of scientists and mathemeticians as she races to find the origins of this Monster invasion.  All the while, the Monster whose arrival will bring about the great Catastrophe arrives in Tokyo…Godzilla has come at last.

Ok, my head hurts.  I’m both completely lost and completely frustrated.  I mean if im being absolutely, 100% honest, HOW HARD IS IT TO MAKE A FREAKING GODZILLA ANIME!!!!???  The pieces are always there: Godzilla, another Monster to fight Godzilla, random human drama, done.  The movies have been following this same formula for over 70 years and that’s after Godzilla first appeared as a metaphor for nuclear horrors that couldn’t be stopped by Humanity (which he became again in later examples like The Return of Godzilla and Shin Godzilla).  What should be an easy win making a bare bones Godzilla story for an Anime is failing at almost every turn in Godzilla: Singular Point.  At some point, you really need to question what writer Toh EnJo was even thinking setting pen to paper on this.  Did he get so lost in writing his five year long term paper about Metaphysics and Time Travel Theory that he forgot he was, you know, SUPPOSED TO BE WRITING A GODZILLA ANIME???!!!!

Godzilla: Singular Point Part 1 Episodes 1-4

A mysterious signal begins emanating from a long abandoned mansion, a song of unknown origin.  Within a matter of hours, a host of Monsters begins to emerge across Japan: flying Pteradons dubbed Rodan, as well as giant serpents in the sea.  As the country scrambles to defend against these creatures, a tech guru, Yun Arikawa, and a Grad Student, Mei Kamino, begin investigating the signal from different ends, beginning a quest to find its origin and see if it can stop a possible Catastrophe to come…a Catastrophe revolving around a legendary monster known as “Gojira”.

In a decades long existence, Godzilla: The King of the Monsters, only just recently found his way into the world of Anime.  Sadly, his first foray was the increasingly terrible “Planet of the Monsters” Trilogy from 2017 and 2018.  I reviewed all three of those movies as they became available and their scores gradually decreased, with the grand finale “The Planet Eater” getting a much deserved 0/10.  So it’s understandable that I exercise caution entering Godzilla: Singular Point.  Sure it looks better animation wise but also comes with the usual Godzilla film concerns from the previews: too many humans and only brief glimpses of Kaiju or Godzilla himself.  Still, minor comfort comes from the animation being in the hands of Studio Bones (Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, Fullmetal Alchemist, Rahxephon).  With all that said, I’m ready to jump into this special bonus three part review I’m adding to Godzilla Month.  So, how does Godzilla: Singular Point begin and does it put any of my fears to rest.

T5W#325-Top 5 Cowboy Bebop Side Stories/Prequels (and one sequel) I Wanna See

“Three years ago…” It’s a time frame that keeps popping up all over Cowboy Bebop.  It seems that the year 2068 was basically the “Origin Year” for every character in the series and even the main antagonist from The Movie.  The Cowboy Bebop TV Series sheds a lot of light on the histories of its main cast but doesn’t give us everything, especially in the case of Spike.  So, idk…I cant be the only one who’s thought about what sort of adventures the Bebop crew might’ve been on before they all came together in 2071, or even what they might be up to afterwards.  As we begin the countdown to the release of the Live Action Netflix Series on November 19th (and the First Impression Friday episode that comes with it), I’ll be doing a few new Cowboy Bebop Top 5 lists, starting with today’s Top 5 Cowboy Bebop Side Stories/Prequels (and one sequel) I Wanna See.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission

After a devastating attack by the Anti Quirk Terrorist Group, Humarise, Japans heroes are mobilized to prevent similar strikes around the globe.  Class 1-A is called in to strengthen their numbers but things take a turn when Deku becomes a wanted fugitive accused of mass murder.  Cut off from his classmates and with only a street smart urchin to help him, Deku must get to the heart of Humarise’s ultimate plan and stop it before the Age of Heroes comes to a cataclysmic end.

My Hero Academia continues to be one of the strongest and most popular Anime in recent memory, achieving near Dragon Ball Z levels of status all over the world.  After two major theatrical releases, we come to World Heroes’ Mission and this was always going to be a tough film to pull off.  For one thing, Heroes Rising, the movie before it, was arguably one of the high points of the franchise, it definitely is for me.  Topping it or at least matching it would be no easy feat.  And yet, the premise seemed like the biggest My Hero Academia had to offer for a movie and the promo images of Deku, Bakugo and Todoroki in kick ass stealth outfits being sent in on a mission was enough to get anyone pumped.  So how does World Heroes’ Mission fare against previous big screen Hero Aca offerings?

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba): The Movie-Mugen Train

Tanjiro Kamado and his team of newly minted Demon Slayers are dispatched to aid one of the high ranking Hashira, Rengoku Kyojuro, in tracking down a demon using the train for its killing ground.  Once on board, everyone finds themselves under the dream like powers of the demon Enmu.  In order to save a train of helpless civilians, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke must fight their way through their own dreams and come to grips with the path that’s lead them to this point.  Aboard the Mugen Train, Demons and Demon Slayers will cross blades and only those with the bravest hearts and wills of iron will survive.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) was the undisputed newcomer champion when it hit the Anime scene in 2019.  The story of a young boy seeking to avenge his family and cure his sister of her demon ailment seemed to resonate greatly with the Anime community and its popularity boomed both in Japan and in the United States.  It’s quickly become as big a heavy hitter as My Hero Academia in a short amount of time and Studio Ufotable wastes no time striking while the iron is hot.  Granted, they could’ve just given us Season Two.  Instead, they’ve opted to continue the saga of Tanjiro and Nezuko with a feature length adaptation of a relatively shorter arc in the overall narrative.  It takes a minute to get going but once this train really picks up steam, Demon Slayer’s big screen debut has you and will not let go right up to the films final moments.

Gojira

In the depths of Japan’s seas, something stirs, something unlike anything humanity has ever seen before.  Some have foreseen its arrival.  Most cannot fathom the awesome destruction it is about to bring to Japan.  It is a force of nature; an unstoppable storm; a tower of devastation and death…and it’s name will be forever etched into history.  If anyone can survive its onslaught, they will remember the name of the creature that is the God incarnate…Godzilla.

Gojira might not have been the first real Kaiju film in history, I’d argue King Kong predates it by almost two decades.  But there is no other film like Gojira itself.  Sure it jumpstarted one of the most successful film franchises in history and given us arguably the greatest giant monster ever conceived.  At it’s heart though, Gojira is a powerful, cautionary tale about the future and past events that have led to catastrophe.  This is far before the days of Godzilla duking it out with King Ghidorah, Mothra or Rodan.  And honestly, it’s the pure focus on Godzilla as the unstoppable force that makes this not just a good beginning for his franchise, but also the king of it and it has yet to be overthrown.
