T5W#7-Top 5 Anime End Themes

So guess I went with the two parter option eh?  Last week it was intros, this week it’s endings.

#5-FLCL-Ride the Shooting Star
FLCL is filled with music you just want to blast in your car during a Sunday afternoon drive.  Just chill out and watch the sites go by.  Of course if you watch the live action footage of Haruko’s bike going AWOL on it’s own sight seeing adventure, you’d want to do the same thing as well.  Not much more to say, it’s great, next number.

#4-Cyborg 009-Genesis of Next

Anime Techno at it’s best.  Genesis of Next’s synth beats echo the mechanical feel of the series 9 main cybernetic heroes and heroines.  But more so that makes it so darn likeable is the build up.  It starts off quietly announcing itself before the bumps kick in and then builds again to the lyrics, sung in the most beautiful fashion.  The full length song clocks in at almost 10min long, but it never feels tiring, it feels epic.  Wasn’t a huge 009 fan but this theme was definitely a highlight of what I saw.

#3-Gundam Build Fighters-Imagination > Reality
You bet Gundam was going to be on this list somewhere.  And again, I had to choose a song from Gundam Build Fighters, a testament to how much I really loved the heck out of this series.  This tune is just flat out fun.  Even as the episode ends, you get pumped up hearing it that you want to jump to the next episode right away.  When I hear it, I think of running through a montage of Anime Conventions, a place I consider filled with extraordinary possibilities.  Even better, is when you add in the image of running through that hallway of fantasy with friends.  Take your dreams and run with them and share them if you wish.  Am I being too deep with this?

#2-Yu-Gi-Oh-Ashita Moshi Kimi ga Kowaretemo
The battle is over and it’s time to reminisce and lament on how the end has come.  That’s the kind of feeling I get hearing this tune.  Very reflective, it kind of has a bit of a mournful beat to it, which I know sounds morbid.  But it also is kind of soothing in a way, kind of a way to lower you from the high of action excitement and into a nice sense of relaxation now that the episode is over.  All that from a Yu-Gi-Oh theme song?  Yeah im surprised too.

#1-Dragon Ball GT-Sabitsuita Machine Gun de Ima o Uchi Nukou
It’s funny.  When I first heard this song I thought it was from DBZ somewhere.  It’s only recently I learned it was from GT and as much as im not a fan of that show, I love the theme music, all openings and endings.  Why does this one stand out, not just in the series but as my favorite ending ever?  Well unlike my #2 option, this sounds like more than just an end or farewell to the journey.  It sounds more like, until next time my friend, the journey never ends.  That alone sums up Dragon Ball itself as a whole, a never ending adventure.  But if you do have to part ways with allies and friends for now, it’s also a good reminisce song, to remind you of the good times and bad times…and how you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage Part 3 Episodes 21-24

With the groups boss slain, Yukio is now head of the Washimine Group.  And that means by law she cant surrender her forces without a fight.  But Rock’s determined to keep Yukio out of the darkness which he himself has descended into.  That means turning his back on the most dangerous person in Roanapur and endangering his own life.  Even Revy knows it’s a fight they might not win.  Tokyo has become a battleground and when the bullets stop flying, Rock’s life will never be the same and he may never be able to go home again.

This is kind of a rarity for me.  Whenever I’ve thought to look for any flaws in these last twelve episodes, I don’t think ive been able to.  Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage, from the beginning, stepped things up from the first season and made it better.  They expanded the world, gave the Lagoon Company tougher opponents and deepened the bonds of teammates trapped in a living hell on Earth.  Why bring this up now and not save it for the end of this review?  I guess I just wanted to say that a series (or rather season) of excellence ended on an equally high note.

Im surprised they dedicated half a season to this Tokyo arc rather than try to get one or two more mini episodes out of it.  At the same time though, it would have been impossible to tell this story in the usual 3 episode structure.  We wouldn’t’ve gotten nearly as much if we crunched it so much: not Rock’s long look at where he came from, not Balialika’s backstory and not nearly as much good build up.  In between those deeper moments (back to those in a moment), we got some of the best action the show has delivered to date.  The bowling alley was the stand out.  Chakka had every bit of violent retribution heading his way.  And after how his men treated Yukio, some violence needed to happen and Revy and Ginji were happy to send them all to hell.  It’s pretty funny that Revy didn’t get the kill shot on Chakka, instead denying him his wild west dual and leaving him to a complete slice down by Ginji.

As for those deeper moments, the character development was off the charts.  Balialika’s need to fight a war she never could being her driving force was on display.  And Rock almost ended up a casualty of that war when he tried to save Yukio from Hotel Moscow’s one sided beat down of the Washimine and Kouza groups.  Rock staring down the barrel of Balialika’s gun was intense and it makes you wonder why this woman would ever have need of allies outside of her own men.  That moment was immediately followed up by Revy chewing out Rock for apparently being suicidal.  Revy’s bond with Rock has deepened a lot this season but seeing them in Tokyo showed us a more…tender side between them.  Revy’s lightened up and it’s clear she thinks of Rock as more than just a charge to protect.  She even begged him to look at her instead of Yukio offing herself to spare him some pain.  Eda may joke about it with her but I don’t think she’s that far off about Revy having actual feelings for Rock.

Sadly, Rock was unable to save Yukio from her inevitable tragic fate.  We didn’t see much fallout in terms of Rock’s reaction and I guess theyre saving that for the next season.  While he’s accepted he is now part of Roanapur’s darkness, he didn’t want the same fate for Yukio and he failed in his attempt to save her.  That cant be good for morale, even in a world where soulless killers are the population.  It’s a good note of uncertainty to leave the season on.

So final thoughts on The Second Barrage?  IT WAS AWESOME!!!! The action was more amazing, the world and Roanapur’s killer line up was expanded, the stories both excited and challenged our moral centers, and we got a taste of what happens when Roanapur comes to the real world…and the real world’s not ready for it.  Revy and Rock were as strong as ever.  If I did have to say something negative, id say that Dutch and Benny did get sidelined for more than half the season, they barely popped up in the Tokyo arc if only to share some sage advice.  But really, the developing partnership between Revy and Rock made up for it.  We saw them understand each other more, open up and even hint of something deeper.  Hard to believe that could happen considering where this series started.

Overall, Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage was an example of a sequel done right and it’s a fun binge ride.  The end of every episode had me wanting more and much like last season, the end came too quick.  Good thing this isn’t the end.  Cause with a show this good, why would you ever want it too?  Yeah, im giving The Second Barrage a

10/10

AMV Friday #7-Tenchi Muyo-Clash of the Titans

Video: Promo for Tenchi Muyo
Audio: Clash of the Titans Trailer 1
(The following video is a fan based production.  All titles are property of their respective owners, please support the official release.)

This one was a bit of a stretch.  I wanted to do some mish mashing with the first Clash of the Titans trailer but I didn’t know what to match it with.  In the end, Tenchi Muyo popped into my head out of the blue and I decided to run with it.  I have mixed feelings about the end result.  It synched up ok, but maybe I could have chosen a stronger Anime to go with it, or attempted to find more scenes.  Although I did work with two or three very small commercials for the show and got a nice one minute trailer, so that is something to be proud of.

T5W#6-Top 5 Anime Intros

Behold, this week it’s the ultimate “Get Pumped Up to Anime” playlist.  There’s nothing like sitting down in front of the TV on a Saturday morning with cereal and siblings, ready to enjoy the latest adventures of heroes and heroines and their merry band of allies.  And in some cases the intros end up being the best part of the show (COUGH COUGH GUNDAM SEED DESTINY COUGH).  So without further ado, my Top 5 Anime Intro’s.

#5-Sailor Moon Crystal-Moon Pride
This might surprise most people.  I haven’t finished Sailor Moon Crystal, it just kind of fell to the back of the wagon after I found other shows.  But I really enjoyed this pumped up reintroduction to the Sailor Senshi Quintet.  The melody and rhythm is catchy, the guitar gives it a bit of an action edge and, tbh it’s kind of nice to see the Senshi back in action.  Say what you will about Crystal, the theme song, Moon Pride, was a solid way to get attention back into everyone’s favorite Guardian in a Sailor Suit.

#4-Gundam Build Fighters-Nibun No Ichi
A Gundam series had to make it onto this list somehow, the franchise is littered with dozens of good candidates.  As tempting as it was to put Wing’s “Just Communication” or “Rhythm Emotion” on here, I opted to go with the theme from a recent series that puts a smile on my face.  “Nibun No Ichi” feels like the call to a friendly get together: to join up with friends, build some Gunpla and pit em against each other if only to find out how to make them work better than before.  When you hear it and youre on your way to do something fun, you agree with the lyrics, “Everything’s gonna be alright” (wish I could say the same about Build Fighters Try but ive fussed about that more than enough).

#3-Stien’s Gate-Hacking Through the Gate
This one’s a bit more recent and while I haven’t watched the show in full, the opening is everything I kind of look for in a song: it’s haunting which makes it memorable, it has that bombastic middle which makes it sound epic, it’s the nigh perfect starter for a series.  Adding in the vivid radio signals at the very beginning make me wonder if this could have been a good anime substititute theme for Doctor Who…nah they’d go with a variation of the classic theme on that one.  Plus, once the chorus gets going you just want to kick all kinds of ass…and that’s really important for me.

#2-Red Faction-Black Lagoon
As soon as the guitar is reved, it’s time to break out the booze and bullets.  This is the ultimate action intro with a heart thumping beat that’s as violent and exciting as the action on the show.  I wish it would have made an appearance within the show itself as I could definitely see Revy and Dutch blasting away with this playing over the action.  Just type in the term “bad ass in Anime” and this song should come right to the forefront.

#1-Dragon Ball Z-Cha La Head Cha La
The quintessential intro.  But more importantly, it’s the first full blown Japanese intro I can remember hearing.  When DBZ was airing on the International Channel a very long time ago, it was run in full, raw Japanese, no subtitles (they later continued this with their airing of Dragon Ball GT).  So not only was it wild stumbling across episodes that hadn’t aired in the states yet, it was wild hearing the amazing opening theme.  It definitely got you pumped, more so than Rock the Dragon imho.  This is as classic as my childhood with Anime gets and I doubt id have as much an appretiation for opening themes without it…especially that bit where the pods crash, the team assembles (both versions) and Goku drops in to finish it up.

Maybe I’ll do endings next week?  Make this a bit of a two part listing lol.

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage Part 2 Episodes 17-20

It’s Revy, Rock and Eda vs ALL OF ROANAPUR!!!  All eyes are searching for Greenback Jane and her precious counterfeiting technology and will stop at nothing to get to her.  All of the crazies are on call and it may be a battle even Revy and Eda cant win.  After that all dies down, Balialika brings Rock with her to Japan to negotiate a terrotiroal expansion deal with the Yakuza, with Revy along for the ride as Rock’s bodyguard.  Will being back home for the first time in a year convince Rock to leave Revy and the Lagoon company behind in favor of a peaceful existence?  And what happens when negotiations go sour between the Yakuza and Hotel Moscow? I’m sure you can guess.

One of the best rides in Anime keeps rolling strong.  After some promising build up with the Greenback Jane story, we got what was promised, an all out war between the Lagoon Company and Roanapur’s finest hitmen and women.  The stand outs were pretty obvious with the sexy Shenhua (have I been spelling her name wrong? If so curse me) giving Revy and Eda plenty of trouble.  There was also that cute Sawyer the Cleaner but her contribution to the entertainment was more than just her giant chainsaw.  Her childish freak out at losing her voice modulator was unexpected and down right hilarious.  Such a carefree chopper of men being reduced to a whimpering baby in a comedic fashion suited the black comedy feel of the series.  That being said I’m glad Shenhua survived her encounter with Revy and Eda and I hope we see her and her apparent new team again.  It’s a shame to think that as well as all of these killers can work together when called for, they are all also ready to kill each other at a moments notice.  But hopefully, comedic and effective alliances like Revy and Eda or Revy and Shenhua can be the exception…though a nice match up between them every now and then wouldn’t be too bad.

It was also good to see The Lagoon Company working this little war as a team.  It’s been a while since Dutch and Benny had anything to do besides sit back and dole out wisdom from a chair.  Dutch’s piloting skills netted some amusing kills for Revy.  Meanwhile Benny’s hacking skills ended up landing him in Jane’s good graces and well the episode isn’t titled “Mr. Benny’s Good Fortune” for nothing.  Oh and what about that surprise revelation from Eda about her being (CENSORED)…does the Rip Off Church know about this?  Will it affect her partnership and see saw friendship with Revy down the line?  Sure more could have been explained but a little mystery doesn’t hurt in this series at all.

Then it was right onto the next arc.  It was only a matter of time before we how the criminal underworld of Roanapur reacted in the rest of the world.  It was a bit of a sort of soft start with Rock returning to Japan for the first time since his abduction by the Lagoon Company.  Having Revy with him was a nice touch.  These two have been a fun pair since Season One and they’ve become less tense and more equal (personally not combatively) around each other.  I love Revy’s obvious take on Rock’s state of mind.  It’s clear she cares a bit about him but yet cant understand why he doesn’t just leave Roanapur and return to Japan.  “It’s made for him,” she says to herself but does she really want him to go?  Will Rock actually go when his job with Balialika and Hotel Moscow is concluded?

One thing is certain though, Balialika isn’t going to sit around and wait for the Washimine family to play nice with Kousaka.  She’s itching for a war in her expansion of Hotel Moscow’s power.  It makes perfect sense Hotel Moscow would play things loud and obvious like in Roanapur but who knows how the city of Tokyo will take to that.  With wild cards like the foul mouthed wannabe Chakka and the silent but clearly dangerous Ginji, it looks like we’re set for some of the most epic action yet.  But then there’s also Yukio, the beautiful young girl set to accept her destiny as the head of the Washimine Clan.  Rock sees a bit of himself and the peaceful life he used to have in her.  I cant see her choice to enter the darkness turning out as well (if you can put it like that) as Rock’s.

It looks like an all out war is about to kick off the season finale of Black Lagoon.  Damn this series and it’s short seasons of awesome epicness.

PS-I wonder how pissed off Revy really was when she learned she had to trade in her shorts and tank top for a winter outfit with a skirt and tights, something a bit more “lady like” for her.  I’m sure her reaction was hilarious.

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage wraps up next week.

AMV Friday #6- Haruhi Suzumiya: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Teaser Trailer

Video: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Audio: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) Teaser Trailer
(The following video is a fan based production.  All titles are property of their respective owners, please support the official release.)

The idea for this trailer started right after I first saw the teaser trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.  I fell in love, mostly with the rendition of Immigrant Song used in the trailer, but also with the editing style used.  There were probably over one hundred shots used and all in and under a single second long.  In many ways, it was the ultimate teaser trailer with the right mix of sound and images that made it seem more like a music video than a trailer.  I wanted a shot at it right away and actually, with Harry Potter coming to an end, I wanted to do one huge HP trailer that encompassed all eight films.  Sadly this was never to be.  And then I saw The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya on Youtube and immediately put it on my list of top 10 greatest anime ever seen.  The look and feel of it reminded me of a novel brought to life and it was very high profile in Japan when it came out.  Hence, I decided that post-Christmas, if I didn’t get it as a Christmas gift, I would purchase the DVD and get to work on the trailer.  The end result isn’t perfect and it doesn’t sync up 100% (maybe between 60-70%) but after spending a record 9 HOURS on this 1 minute and 30 second trailer I am very happy with how it turned out and how far I have come in my editing hobby.  I have brand new sympathy for editors everywhere who have to dedicate so much time to simple scenes that take hours, even days to work on.  If I had to redo my top 5 greatest AMV’s ever made or even if I made a top 10 (which could be possible once this season is eventually finished) this trailer would certainly find its way there.

Gundam Anime Rant-Gundam Build Fighters Try

Well this was…disappointing to say the least.

After the finale of Gundam Build Fighters I was pumped.  Sure there wasn’t a lot explained as to Reiji’s other worldly origins, how the technology came from the to here to make Gunpla Battles possible or if Reiji and Aila would ever return to Sei and China after their sad departure…but I was still satisfied and eager for more.

I don’t know if it was my high holdings of the first series that may have proved to be too much for Gundam Build Fighters Try to live up to.  But turns out a number of things would hold it way, WAY back from being anywhere near as good as it’s predecessor.

But first, the plot.  It’s been seven years since Sei and Reiji’s victory at the 7th Gunpla World Tournament.  Reiji is still MIA with Aila and Sei has gone on to become a building legend much like his father.  Gunpla Battles have changed in this time skip.  Tournaments now focus on 3 man cell battles comprised of fighters and builders.  One such enthusiast, Fumina Hoshino, wishes to form a team to compete in the Japanese National Tournament, the first step to the world championship.  She finds additional teammembers in her childhood friend, Yuuma Kousaka, brother of China Kousaka, and Sekai Kamiki, a martial arts prodigy who bears a strange resemblance to another mysterious Gunpla Fighter. Together, under the guidance of legend Ramba Ral, they form Team Try Fighters.  But there’s plenty holding this crew back from being a top notch team and their opponents are some of the most vicious Gunpla Fighters to step into the ring.

Right off the bat, I was sad to realize that my guess of not continuing Sei’s story was a reality here.  I was excited to see a female Gundam character at the forefront of the team as was anxious to see Fumina develop.  But then we got to Sekai aka Reiji 2.0.  Save for not being from another world, Sekai’s backstory is about the same as Reiji’s: he doesn’t know anything about Gunpla cause he lives in his own little martial arts mind set but has good instincts especially when he learns he can apply his Jigen Haoh School style to battle.  Sekai went back and forth with me.  Mostly I couldn’t stand him screaming his school’s name before every attack, what 2 or 3 he constantly reuses.  I know this is a staple of Anime, Kenshin Himura does it often but his sound a lot cooler and less bombastic.  And why OH WHY do people keep thinking that bonding with their machines and enduring life threatening damage as a result is a good idea continues to elude me.

And then there’s Yuuma…f***ing Yuuma.  He is set up from the start as a Gunpla Builder with a dark past.  He was trained by Sei personally, makes sense given how close Sei was and probably still is with China, that’s never made clear.  But his Gunpla was destroyed horrifically in a battle with a monstrous Gunpla model.  His confidence shot, Yuuma swore he’d never fight again but finds himself drawn back in by Fumina out of loyalty to his childhood friend.  And yet Yuuma always has a ginormous stick up his ass.  He’s always brooding and haunted by this battle that broke him as well as his Gundam and it feels like he never recovers from it, even if signs point to otherwise at the end.

Actually this is a decent seguay.  Watching Yuuma’s Gunpla get ripped to pieces is a perfect indicator of how much DARKER Build Fighters Try is.  Even at it’s darker and more intense moments, Gunpla Battle looked like a helluva lot of fun and you could see the glint in every fighters eyes, even when they lost, to do better in the future.  Yuuma’s intense depression over losing his match and the ferocity of the bulk of the Try Fighters opponents almost makes this pleasant and fun sport extremely depressing and unlikeable.  Sei and Reiji would not have gotten into such a bad funk as when the Try Fighters lose in skirmish matches.  Reiji would declare next time their ass would be theirs.  And Sei would be in awe of the power of his opponents Gunpla and want to learn more about it and how to make his better.  Yuuma is f***ing terrified everytime he gets beaten.  There’s a point in the series where someone calls Yuuma “The Second Coming of Sei Iori”.  The second I heard that I pointed to the scream and shouted “You take that back RIGHT THE F*** NOW!!!”  Yuuma was a clear indicator that as long as he was a main character, I wasn’t going to enjoy this show.

And that was super early on.  I tried really hard to hope that I would feel the same sense of awe, wonder and excitement from Build Fighters…but I just got more frustrated with each episode.  I think by the mid point I really didn’t care what happened to the main three characters.  Win or lose, it didn’t matter, I had no interest in their future.  Actually, I couldn’t find a single character to give a crap about.  Even the return of familiar faces Ramba Ral and “Meijin Kawaguchi” Tatsuya Yuuki, never do anything to really breathe ay familiar levity as both characters are made more serious to match the tone of the series.  Tatsuya’s even given a female counterpart who isn’t much in terms of just that, a female counterpart, she’s basically Tatsuya with blonde hair and boobs.

Indeed the cast of Build Fighters Try makes Gunpla Battle so unappealing it’s practically scary.  One of Sekai’s many rivals in this show appears towards the end and turns out to be a f***ing terrifying person whose soul purpose in the show is to shout his will at Sekai while producing facial expressions that are nightmare fuel (this isn’t made better when you find out that their mutual master is Domon Kasshu from G Gundam, aka the King of over dramatizing something so series as Gundam Battle).  It doesn’t help matters, also, that every single team that the Try Fighters takes on is practically the same through and through.  The show doesn’t have a world tournament setting so the diversity that helped make Build Fighters great is gone.  And as I said, what makes Gunpla Battle so unlikeable is every team is do or die about Gunpla Battle.  They may preach about finding it fun to battle an opponent but everyone has adopted a win at all cost method that’s just way too dark.

Did I like anything about this series?  Honestly the best parts of the show are when we got some levity that made me feel like when I was watching Build Fighter.  Sekai and Fumina singing “Anime Janai”, the theme from Gundam ZZ, was cute until f***ing Yuuma told them to shut up (YOU SHUT UP YOU UN FUN A HOLE!!!).  The G-Muse was amazing with the long history of all that Gundam.  And I did like the last half of the final episode, when everyone joined into a massive free for all Gunpla Battle, not to win but to have fun.  That was the show I was looking for, that’s the kind of scale and enjoyment I wanted Build Fighters Try to produce.  The first opening theme was pretty awesome too with Back-On returning to the series…the others were ok but by that point I was associating them more with my dislike for the show than any enjoyment.

And honestly, I was hoping Sei and Reiji would appear in more than just mention.  But both heroes are totally absent, their story pushed to the side in favor of three less than successful characters.  China and Nils make brief appearances and it was good to see them and I wanted to know more about what there were up to more than whatever the hell the Try Fighters were up to.  I did hold out some hope that Fumina and Sekai would hook up, but I guess that was me trying to find small comfort in this series and not really finding any.

What happened to Sei and Reiji?  Did they ever meet again?  Did Sei battle some more powerful opponents who inspired him and in turn he may have inspired?  What about Mao and Felini?  Where was all the goodness and joy that made me love Gunpla Battle?

The answers to those questions may never be revealed since as of right now, I have heard nothing about a third season of Gundam Build Fighters.  But honestly, after the disaster of a season that Build Fighters Try was, im not sure I want to even watch a third season.  They tried to follow the sequel rules with Try: up the action, intensify the characters and the world they live in, make it feel older and more mature.  But in the process they sucked out the heart of what made these battles and the characters behind the models so likeable.  In a way I wish Sei and Reiji would return for a three on one duel with Fumina, Sekai and Yuuma (especially Yuuma) so that they could put these three characters in their place and show them what it means to enjoy a battle, not just saying it (cause I never bought it even in the end when the Try Fighters said they loved Gunpla Battle) but feeling it, which I always did watching Sei and Reiji fight on the battlefield.

This show was Gundam Seed Destiny all over again.  It was a series I desperately wanted to be good and, in the end, felt like I had wasted the better part of 25 episodes of time I will never get back.  There are maybe 2 episodes worth of good material that keep me from rating it lower than Destiny.  But if Gundam Build Fighters was a fresh and loving move in the right direction for Gundam, then Gundam Build Fighters Try was a huge step backwards.  And that’s just heartbreaking for me.

T5W#5-Top 5 Favorite Swordsman in Anime

Even since before I got into Anime, I was always a fan of heroes who preferred the sword as their primary weapon.  From Robin Hood to Star Wars, the clash of steel (or energy) always had my attention and had me in total awe.  So it’s natural I’d get into Anime and find an army of gallant and bad ass swordsman, Samurai or Knight or Game Players, waiting for me to witness their glorious battles.  These five have stood out in my mind when I think of Best Swordsman.

#5-Kirito (Sword Art Online)
Kirito is an extremely overpowered bad ass since he’s been Beta testing the Sword Art Online game for months prior to it’s release.  That doesn’t mean he isn’t impessive to watch.  His speed and practical grace when dual wielding blades is nothing short of stellar.  His long black coated look makes me think that this is what Neo could have been in The Matrix if would actually pick up a sword for more than two seconds.

#4-Saber (Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works)
A particular king of legend was actually a girl?  Yeah I could roll with that.  Saber’s skill in battle matches her grace and beauty under pressure.  It’s no wonder she catches the eye of all of her opponents.  She’s polite and chivalrous to a fault but that doesn’t mean she’ll hold back on you.  And even handicapped Saber can take anyone on.  Add in an overpowered Excalibur like blade and you’ve got the best Holy Grail servant around (imho of course).

#3-Jin (Samurai Champloo)
Mugen may have been the one everyone focused on in Samurai Champloo because of his wild attitude and break dance style sword play, but Jin was always my favorite of the two.  To me, Jin was a picture example of a wandering Ronin of the stories I used to hear about.  He was calm, cool and deadly with a sword.  He’d cut you down in one impressive hit then go about his business without so much as a care.  He was a man of few words and great discipline and he sported glasses…strange but that added to the admiration.

#2-Byakuya Kuchiki (Bleach)
Bleach is littered with guys who know how to use a sword.  But Byakuya makes my list because he was my favorite captain who, ironically enough, I despised at first for being a villain.  But even then, the second he unleashed his Senbonsakura on his enemies, you knew he was a force to be reckoned with.  As the series went on, he outgrew that heartless villain role I first assumed of him and grew into a man I could respect.  He wasn’t just powerful, he’s the captain id aspire the most to be.

#1-Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin)
The king of the wandering samurai, the man who was one of my first Anime heroes, the one who gave me my now common use catch phrase “Oro?”  Kenshin was for me, the first of a certain kind of character with a dark past who hid it behind a gullible façade.  Many have tried to replicate that from Vash the Stampeded in Trigun to Nightroad in Trinity Blood but they were never as good as the tragic Kenshin.  And yet in spite of his blood soaked past, Kenshin still carries on, using non life threatening (when he wants it to) Sakabatou and his Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu sword style, to protect as many as he can.  His past may not be exemplary but his way of life in the present is one we all should follow: peace…with a show of force when necessary.

Any slicers and dicers of men that are your favs?  Comments are open to all.

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage Part 1 Episodes 13-16

For a bullet and blood ridden hellhole like Ronapur, very little can instill fear in it’s inhabitants.  And then two Vampiric teeny boppers roll into town and begin offing members of Hotel Moscow.  They may look cute and adorable but these two are more sadistic and terrifying than Revy can ever be in her life.  A hefty bounty is put on their heads but Balialika and Hotel Moscow are determined to see justice done their way first.  All bets are off and there are no innocents when Roanapur’s most dangerous group of former Russian mercenaries go to war.

Black Lagoon is back for it’s second season aka The Second Barrage.  And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, man was a happily surprised.

It’s not everyday you get a story that makes you so morally conflicted about the villains.  That’s not to say that everyone in this series is a straight up good guy.  However, the Romanian Child Killing Twins were a whole new level of heartbreaking WTF especially once their backstories were revealed.  Do they really deserve the fate that they received?  Would we be ok if they got away scot free?  Well the answer to the latter is probably not.  As sad as it is to know the truth of their horrific childhood, the twins thirst for blood and acts that would make a stone cold killer vomit had to be stopped…and they just happened to piss off the one person who would have no qualms taking them out

To see Balialika actually show compassion for her comrades is something kind of unsettling.  Here is the coldest person in Ronapur and here we have her talking about her soldiers like they are family.  It’s bizzare but it also leads to my absolute favorite scene of Black Lagoon so far.  Confronted by one of the twins, the sexy leader of Hotel Moscow revealed she was not the hunted but the other way around and watched with cold heart at max chill as her would be assassin bled to death in tears screaming about how he’d live forever.  We also got an amazing quote as well, “I think Oingo Boingo said it best: Nobody lives forever, that’s just the way it goes.”  My God I love this show even if the scene was a little hard to watch.  Evil they may have been, the twins were just children.

Revy and the Lagoon Crew didn’t get much to do in that story actually until right at the end.  Even Revy teaming up with a sexy short sporting Eda didn’t serve much.  I don’t hold that against this story as they still got some fun moments of levity in.  Rock, on the other hand, was the audience’s POV and his reaction to the killer twins origins was dead on.  Just when you think you’ve seen the darkness, it shows you something worse.  Black Lagoon may be an action show but it’s heavy on the commentary of the heart of darkness.

The start of the next story arc does seem set to provide some fun levity to balance things.  We got to see Roanapur’s gallery of killers expanded a bit now that everyone is gunning for Revy and Eda’s new charge, Greenback Jane.  In addition to the return of the Chinese Knife wielder Xinghua, we got a firestarting maniac, a trenchcloak clad wizard (?) and the cute but you would gag at her chainsaw powered line of work “cleaner” Sawyer.  Oh and we got to see the Rip Off Church unleash hell with Revy at their side.  Chainguns, Golden Desert Eagles with Explosive rounds fired by Mother Superior herself?  It’s this kind of over the top entertainment that reminds me why this show is so much fun.

BTW we really need a Revy and Eda spin off tale.  They are frenemies at their very best.  And it’s them, plus Rock, vs. the city of Roanapur next week.  Will Greenback Jane survive the carnage storm?  Or will Revy be having too much fun to care?

Lock and Load and see ya next week.

AMV Friday #5-Spike Payne

Video: Cowboy Bebop
Audio: Max Payne Trailer 2
(The following video is a fan based production.  All titles are property of their respective owners, please support the official release.)

I was browsing several trailers on youtube when I eventually came across the second Max Payne trailer.  I had often wanted to do a video with Cowboy Bebop and after watching the Max Payne trailer realized (as with Bond and Kenshin) just how similar the stories of Spike Spiegel and Max Payne are when put in context of the trailer.  A friend once asked me if I ever considered doing a trailer for an existing movie that kind of sucks but giving it a better trailer.  It would be something I would like to pursue one day.  For now, however, I think I actually think I made Max Payne a little better by cutting the trailer audio with the Anime version of Mark Walberg.  Hey, it made me want to see the movie.

Special Review-Gundam Build Fighters

I am surprised it took me this long to get around to Gundam Build Fighters.  The series and it’s sequel, Gundam Build Fighters Try, have both been available of Sunrise’s GundamInfo Youtube page since they debuted a couple of years back.  I was always curious to check it out but I guess just never got around to them.  What a mistake that was.  Gundam Build Fighters took a concept that was risky with a franchise like Gundam and in the end, struck me right in my heart as a fan of this decades spanning giant robot franchise.

The series is set in present day, decades after the initial boom of Gunpla (short for Gundam Plastic Models).  Gunpla is everywhere now and is now recognized as a world sport, both modeling and battling.  A special system has been invented which can allows builders and fighters to participate in Gunpla Battle, virtual simulations where Gunpla can clash at their leisure.  Sei Iori has been a Gundam fan since birth.  His mother runs a Gunpla shop and his father is a Gunpla building legend.  But Sei isn’t a fighter and his dreams of becoming a world champion like his father seem very distant despite his love for Gundam.  That all changes when he meets Reiji, a mysterious boy who feels like he’s from another world and has never heard of Gunpla Battle.  But once Sei introduces him to it, Reiji is hooked and he quickly commandeers Sei’s skills to build, manage and support a Gunpla he can pilot.  Oh and Reiji just happens to be a Prince from another world that might have a strange connection to the particles that power Gunpla battles…yeah just go with it, it’s hardly ever brought up after the first time.

After finishing the first series, im kind of at a loss of where to start talking.  The plot? The multitude of Gundams?  The strange but loveable cast?  The annoyances that never really cleared themselves up? The fact that I want this world to actually exist and talk Gundam with everyone all day?

Oooooook, let’s take a breath.

Like I said, with so many emotions as to why I enjoyed this series, I have to remember how this show should not have worked.  I mean yes, Gundam Plastic Models have been more the lifesblood of Mobile Suit Gundam than the shows themselves.  Every time a new show rolls out, new models appear for sale and Gundam’s popularity has thrived off of that.  It got an especially added boost after Gundam Wing took the US by storm in 2000 and unleashed it’s merch as well.  But to make a series based off these popular items and forgo Gundam’s usual war torn set up?  This was kind of attempted with the first alternate reality Gundam Series, G Gundam, with Gundams used more for martial arts combat than a real war.  I have mixed feelings about that series: love the mechs but think the lead character is a waste of time and effort (Yes Internet, I hate Domon Kasshu…deal with it).  So why did Build Fighters impress me?

Sei is a key factor.  In his first scene, showing a couple of customers around his familys shop, he immediately goes into the full spec and historical details of the Wing Gundam from Gundam Wing.  That is basically my inner Gundam fan on display there.  So excited, so thrilled, so happy to talk about it with others.  He’s basically the little brother I didn’t think I wanted in life but there he is.  His passion for Gundam is one people can understand as it isn’t different from ones dedication to sports, which Gunpla Battle is recognized as I remind you.  And he’s nowhere near as creepy as Gundam 00’s Graham Acker…who let’s face it basically wanted to (CENSORED) a Gundam.  Sei’s spirit drives many of the events of this series and while he isn’t the best fighter, he is still a good teacher for Reiji, who ends up becoming his best friend.

Yeah I mentioned Reiji is from a kingdom in another dimension…really that isn’t really talked about much until right before the end of the series and it’s rarely brought up before hand, everyone kind of just ignores it.  Reiji’s Prince status is evident in his attitude which did make him irksome from time to time.  At some points I felt like he never gave a crap about Sei and his thoughts on Gunpla and just wanted to fight to win.  But Reiji came around and found a friend and even a family once he was taken in by Sei’s insanely hot mother, Rinko.  Once Reiji figures out his deeper reasons for enjoying Gunpla, he becomes Sei’s equal and voices his enjoyment of the battle with pride and happiness.

The cast is as diverse as they come, especially since the latter half of the series find Sei and Reiji in a Gunpla Battle World Tournament.  There’s the cat like building genius Mao, my personal fav; Italian flirter Fellini; an American Science Ninja (yes that’s a thing) Nils; a beautiful European child prodigy Aila; and there’s even a Char knock off in the form of Tatsuya who takes on the mantle of a legendary Gunpla fighter Meijin Kawaguchi.  Oh and believe it or not, legendary Zeon Ace Ramba Ral from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, is a main character, serving as Sei and Reiji’s chief mentor in their journey.  You want more fan service, Episode 23 features a Gunpla festival with cameo appearances from pretty much every chief Gundam character from the last 35 years, talk about whoa.

Next to Sei, the Gunpla battles are definitely my favorite part of this series.  Immeidatley, I was naming off models left and right as this series has no distinct set of suits.  Nope, every series in Gundam history is repped here in one way.  And because this series is just that full of imagination, we get special custom forms of beloved favorites like the Gundam Mark 2, Deathsythe, Exia, Epyon, even non Gundams like Tallgeese, GM and Goufs.  It’s a total nerd gast seeing the franchise clash in epic fashion.  I was a little worried when we got to the World Tournament just before the second half of the series began as I was worried they were going to drag out the remaining episodes of a relatively short series for a Gundam.  But seeing the Gunpla in a battle royale, even a race or test of various hilarity degrees alleviated my fears.  And then we got some truly epic battles to sate the hype.  Sei and Reiji had so many great back to back battles in the finals: their putting Nils in his place and their battle with Fellini both stood out the most.

The only limits to how far this series can go with it’s battle and mech choices are the limits of the staffs imagination.  And I think that’s what I enjoyed the most.  It was so fun back in the day to collect Gundam action figures and have Amuro’s RX-78 take on Heero’s Wing Zero or Kira Yamato’s Strike Gundam.  Build Fighters is a Gundam fans playground, with a long library of mechs, both original and custom to build from.  I so wanted this world to be a reality, this Yu Gi Oh meets Mech fighting amazement.  I felt so at home and eventually sad that the series came to an appropriate end after 25 episodes.  While I have begun watching Gundam Build Fighters Try, ill admit that show will have to work a bit harder to suck me back in since it picks up years later and there’s been no sign of Sei, Reiji or their allies from the original series.

It’s been a long time since ive cared about a series this much and of course it had to be a Gundam one.  Did I have problems with it?  Oh yeah.  I was sick of Nils trying to use science and statistics to win instead of having fun like everyone else…though he got better after fighting Sei and Reiji.  Oh and I HATED the Tournament President who had a mysterious connection to Reiji but refused to tell us why and just whine about it.  We do learn the secret but it seems like such a let down after such an angering build up I wish he had been replaced all together…his assistant was pretty hot though and it was funny he originally met her when she cosplayed as Sayla Mass from Mobile Suit Gundam.

I loved this series, faults and all.  It’s the vision I have of Valhalla…within an Anime Convention.  It reminded me that it’s ok to be a nerd and enjoy something you love so long as you don’t lose faith in it.  For me that’s Anime and chief of those is Gundam.  Gundam Build Fighters shouldn’t have been a hit with me.  It looks like a kids show with Gundam meeting Yu Gi Oh.  But it’s more than just a kid friendly entry in the franchise: it’s a love letter to fans of the legendary mobile suit from past to present.  And it rocked for 25 straight episodes.

Yeah, it’s getting a 9/10…check it out and never let your imagination die.

T5W#4-Top 5 Anime Based Video Games

I’ll be honest about it up front: I haven’t played too many of these.  However I have played my fair share and have enjoyed these select five titles based on their gameplay, fun factor and authenticity to the shows on which theyre based.  These are the games you played when you wanted more and wanted to be a bit more involved with your favorite characters.  So no sense in wasting time, let’s get to it.

#5-Gundam Wing: Endless Duel (SNES)
If you were lucky enough to get a copy of this game, youd wish that Gundam Wing came out in the US in 1996 after the show had wrapped.  That way the game could still come out when the Super Nintendo was in it’s final glory days and this could have been a good send off.  At the time, this was the Gundam Wing game we sort of wanted but appreciated anyway.  The roster was a small one but the combat was very much reminiscent of Street Fighter and ended up being a good brawler.  Plus hearing some of the Gundam Wing themes in 8 bit form will make you so giddy inside.

#4-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (PS2)
SAC isn’t a perfect game, it’s more of a guilty pleasure.  It moves a bit…clunky and the gunplay isn’t the greatest.  Yet this still feels like a Ghost in the Shell story and game.  It’s definitely helped by the addition of the voice casts from both dubs.  Plus you get to control Motoko, Batou and even a Tachikoma through many intense levels of bullets, hacking and even some hand to hand combat.  It could have been a bit more polished but I do enjoy it for the Stand Alone Complex feel this game brings.  Just wish I could find a copy of the soundtrack somewhere.  It’s not Yoko Kanno work or quality but for a game it’s one of the most fitting ones ive ever heard.

#3-Dragon Ball Z Budokai (PS2)
Up until the release of this game, there had been so-so attempts to get a fighting game out of Dragon Ball Z, the closest decent attempt was probably Dragon Ball GT Final Bout.  But Budokai brought us not exactly to the perfect DBZ fighting game but was a step in the right direction.  The CG characters moved well and the fighting spirit of the show was there.  The roster wasn’t the greatest of numbers, mostly cause it only went from the Saiyan Saga thru the Cell Saga, but your favorites were all there and ready to play.  For anyone who owned a PS2, this game was a dream come true…well for me it was almost, the real one was yet to come.

#2-Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 (PS2)
Dragon Ball Z Budokai laid the groundwork for the possibility of an amazing DBZ game.  Budokai 2 was…a little better but Budokai 3 not only took Budokai’s fun to the next level, it perfected the style began in the first entry.  With a roster of fighters that goes up through GT, dozens of arenas to choose from and even a CPU vs CPU option to watch your dream match up of Yamcha vs Kid Buu play out…in the most unexpected way depending on it’s mood lol, Budokai was the ultimate love letter to fans of DBZ.  Plus it has SSJ4 Gogeta as a possible fusion and his ultimate attack is a borderline God Mode Cheat in every possible way

#1-Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 (Xbox 360, PS3)
This game was an amazing dream come true whose packaging hid more of it’s true treasure than advertised.  Not only do we get a wacky story that brings together the cast of almost every single Gundam entry (through 2010’s Gundam Unicorn and Gundam 00 The Movie…which was DLC only) but it brings along a mass Iron Legion sized library of Gundams and various other Mobile Suits from the franchises history.  Working from the ground up to level up pilots and collect blueprints for stronger Mobile Suits offers hours of fun as there’s a character for everyone to love and a suit of choice for tearing up hundreds of enemies at a time.  It’s repetitive as all know how…but come one how can I not love Haro giving me orders over the communique or forcing Duo Maxwell into the Operations Manager role and hearing him complain about it?

I know im missing quite a bit since these are just from my experience.  Any titles out there that take the cake for you?
