Gundam: Reconguista in G Part 4 Episodes 16-20

The Megafauna arrives at Towasanga, where a life changing revelation is waiting for Bellri and Aida.  But theyre not the only new arrivals.  Envoys from the Capital Army and Ameria are close behind, both looking to curry favor with Towasanga.  A new discovery points to the mysterious Hermes Foundation and Aida is determined to face them in person.  However, one critical problem emerges, an ultimatum from Towansanga: whoever brings them Bellri and the G-Self will gain their full support.  Soon an all out war is on with Bellri and the G-Self as the ultimate prize.

Throughout my life, especially in the last few years, I’ve come to appreciate the 1980’s classic hit “Land of Confusion” by Genesis the more I listen to it.  Not only is it a freaking awesome song but the lyrics feel pretty timeless.  When the world starts acting less than sane or some catastrophe happens, I turn to this particular part before the main lyrics, “There’s too many men, too many people making too many problems.  And not much love to go around, tell me why this is a land of confusion.”  This quote alone sums up everything about Reconguista in G.  Nothing makes sense and everything is just loud noise and a ton of posturing.  In short, it’s a land of confusion and we’re at the penultimate chapter of this cluster cuss of an Anime…it hasn’t gotten better since the beginning and it probably wont as we near the end.

Our visit to Towasanga was very brief but not much stood out from it as opposed to every other place the Megafauna has been.  They show up to a new location, schenanigans happen while serious exposition is trying to be explained…and then a big fight scene happens.  In this case: Bellri and Aida are siblings, scions of the Rayhunton Family, who have been at odds with the Dorette Fleet over…stuff.  It’s a bit ironic that even though they were sent to Earth separately, Bellri and Aida still became children of two warring nations…so good work there Parents, one of whom bears a striking resemblance to Clarke Gable from Gone with the Wind.  The two take this news about as well as they’ve taken everything else in this show…with initial dull surprise with a couple brief freak out scenes to follow.  Bellri’s the more worked up of the two: whether or not because he now knows he comes from Towasanga or that Aida’s his sister so he has zero chance with her now (ok, ok, it was never implied he was ever romantically attracted to her but it had to be there).  The shows trying to morph Bellri into a more typical Gundam protagonist now: sick of Adults bullcrap that’s been thrust on the youth of tomorrow.  There’s also attempts to give him a bit of a Loran Cehek arc from Turn A Gundam where Bellri intends to fight against his homeland because he’s grown to love Earth so much.  Problem is: Loran is one of the very best protagonists in all of Gundam…Bellri is sharing a room with Shinn Asuka at the bottom of the list.  Oh and Bellri wants to bring a “Sea to Space”…more on that later but whatever, you do you dude.

At one point, a character classified Bellri’s generation as “The Generation that views War as Fun and Games.”  In a show where the head writer is trying to be prolific and failing super hard, this is the truest statement in all of Reconguista in G.  There are no serious minded politicians or tactical geniuses.  There’s no suave and in control Treize Kushrenada’s or charming and ruthless Scirocco’s.  There’s just a bunch of young guys screaming and yelling about how theyre all “Geniuses”  and how theyre gonna change the world and take over their respective forces like its already happened.  Mask, Klim, Rockpie, theyre all just teens whining about accomplishments that they haven’t earned and everyone is humoring for their own secret agendas.  At one point, Towasanga basically says they’ll ally with either the Capital Tower or Ameria…if they bring them Bellri and the G-Self.  Suddenly it becomes a big competition to catch the Mobile Suit that SOMEONE FINALLY CALL A GUNDAM 16 EPISODES IN (and that’s coming from a guy who hates the G-Self, its so ugly).  This isn’t war, it’s a game and theres little sense anyones in danger.  At one point everyone starts making a freaking competition out of cleaning up an accidental colony blow out that happened OFF SCREEN.  This. Isnt. Gundam.  And as you can clearly tell, it’s pissing me off.

Eventually Towasanga got put in the Megafauna’s rear view as Aida directed everyone to head for the Venus Globe: the main HQ of The Hermes Foundation, the group responsible for instilling the big Taboos everyone is breaking.  This involved hoping on a giant Space Ark that only Bellri and Aida could activate to its true potential because why not?  Also we got one character turning traitor suddenly because this show loves its randomness.  And lastly, to prove nothing is ever going to change with this show, we got another little civil war at the Venus Globe between The G-IT Corps…, and Rosario Ten, the central control group of the Venus Globe I guess.  The G-IT Corps were just a bunch of pompous roided out new loud mouths to deal with, talking about capturing the G-Self and proclaiming they’ll defeat the Megafauna at any cost…only to freak out when their actions damage the Venus Globe and unleash a literal ocean into space (isn’t this what Bellri wanted?).  Oh no, someone broke another Taboo…screw this series and its characters hypocritical way of thinking.  The Taboo was bull and everyone knows it and everyones going to be yammering about it until the show is finally over.

Mercifully, depending on your point of view, that’s only one more review away.  I could just call it here and mark Gundam: Reconguista in G with the score is so deserves…but 6 episodes need to be watched in order to give this dumpster fire a 1% chance of making it to a 1/10.  Friday cant come soon enough so that I can get this thing done and finally move on to, hopefully, better things with Iron Blooded Orphans.

Side note: Does anyone actually understand or like Reconguista in G and do the Compilation Movies fix anything?  I honestly don’t know if i’d review them.  Sure I did that for Gundam AGE but that was one OVA and it focused on the only of the four major arcs that actually worked.  I don’t see G Reco having the same miracle story there.  Anyway, Friday, finale, see ya then for one more assured rant about Gundam: Reconguista in G right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
