Ronin Warriors Part 2 Episodes 6-10

The Ronin Warriors first battle with the Dark Warlords ended in defeat.  Talpa used his magic to scatter the warriors across Japan, seemingly locking them away for eternity.  But their new allies, Mia Koji and Yuli Yamano have unlocked the secret to tracking down the lost heroes.  They’ve already found Ryo and Sage and now must track down the other three Ronin Warriors.  The Dynasty isn’t sitting idly by and the Dark Warlords are all eager to test their powers against the returning heroes.  Even if Ryo can reunite with his new team of friends, will their combined power be enough when Talpa and the Dynasty have already defeated them once before?

Ronin Warriors continued pretty strong in its second out.  There’s good momentum in the quest to reunite the scattered team and almost every moment felt integral to moving the plot along, hardly any filler can be spotted so far.  Even when the show goes a little beyond its reach (grabbing a Ronin Warrior from low orbit), it managed to do so in a way that plays to the ever changing rules of the series.  In short, I’m still having fun checking this out 10 episodes in.

The mission to reunite the Ronin Warriors Boy Band split into two teams, both with great results.  Ryo managed to rescue Cye and get in a great rematch with Sekmet.  One thing I have to admire about how the battles play out is how smart and yet how a little dumb characters can be sometimes.  Obviously, the five armors play to some elemental strength, so it stands to reason that in their particular element, theyd be stronger.  We saw some of this last tome in Ryo’s fight with Anubis, how his armor was fueled by the power of the volcano but he had to be careful not to harm Mia and Yuli when he had to rescue them.  So even though Sekmet managed to put his poison to good use breaking down Cye’s fishy defenses and even hit on some wounds Ryo suffered last time (great continuity), he’s still challenging Cye at the bottom of a river, this fight can only eventually go one way.  It’s kind of a miracle Ryo could move as well as he could in his anti element.  Still, the Warlords aren’t dummies and they rethink when they need to, same with Ryo and company.

Meanwhile, Mia and Sage went to look for Kento and I’ve gotta say, Mia is as much a bad ass as any of the guys.  When Sage tells her to stay in the car, she refuses to be the valet.  When Sage needs five minutes to meditate and master his hidden power, Mia takes lead and distracts Cale for him.  When Kento wants to bolster about going to fight the Dynasty solo if he has to, Mia tells him to sit the frak down and chill.  She might not have a sword, staff or bow and arrow, but Mia’s intellect and take charge attitude make her more of a valuable asset than any of the main Warriors themselves.  While she got to shine during the Kento rescue episode, sadly Cale, Dark Warlord of Corruption, didn’t fare as well in his debut outing like his fellow Dark Warlords.  Between Anubis’ complicated character arc, Sekmet’s style and Dais’ creepy factor, there wasn’t much of a chance for Cale to stand out (also he only got one episode to go after any of the guys, unlike Anubis or Sekmet who go multiple episodes).  Fairing better despite getting a single solo outing as well was Dais, who used his illusion powers to force the Warriors to beat the crap out of each other when they thought they were all fighting him.  Dais’ episode was chock full of dark imagery, from temple with black candlelit rooms to smog infested battlefields, there was a definite horror Anime feel to his battle and it was excellent.

The largest portion of this set came to rescuing Rowen from…low Earth orbit?  Yeah I was kind of worried about how exactly four super Samurai, a cute college student, a eight year old and a White Tiger were going to pull this off.  However, Ronin Warriors didn’t disappoint and used the rules (albeit ever changing on a dime) of its more mystical set up to get the job done.  We didn’t see the guys commandeer a space shuttle but rather Talpa inadvertedly gave them the opening they needed.  Sure riding the death ball from the Cannon of Doom (yep, its as silly as it sounds), nearly cost Ryo his life but hey it got him from Point A to Point B.  Rowen autopiloting himself and Ryo back to Earth was strange, does the Armor have a mind of its own?  Once we got back planet side, things got more interesting for the climax.  A rematch against Anubis yielded some surprising developments.  Apparently the Dark Warlord of Cruelty isn’t simply about killing the Warriors outright.  Much like Zechs Merquise from Gundam Wing, Anubis wants an honorable duel against Ryo and his friends.  He doesn’t want to just hit them when theyre immobile and unable to fight, or get super juiced up on Dark Magic, he wants to win fair and square.  It doesn’t change the fact he’s still one of the bad guys at the moment, but with Talpa yanking Anubis away for this little weakness, maybe we could see a change in Anubis going forward.

If there were a couple of things holding this set back, they were minimal things.  We’re 10 episodes in and still no info has been given on the Monk who looks like Raiden from Mortal Kombat who has been lending his staff and wisdom in small doses, sometimes even bailing the Warriors, Mia and Yuli out of danger outright.  Soooo…why isn’t he just confronting Talpa (who seems to know him) outright?  And then there’s Kento, whose brashness just came off as annoying.  We haven’t had the chance to really get to know any of the guys outside of Ryo cause he’s been in the most episodes, but Kento gives off the least favorable impression of the bunch.  I don’t hate him, he’s just not my fav of the Warriors, kind of like how Cale is my least favorite of the Dark Warlords thus far.

Well it didn’t take too long to get the band back together.  Now Talpa’s got the Dynasty castle on lockdown and it looks like we’re gonna get to Round 2 against the Dynasty sooner than expected.  This show isn’t slowing down or giving a chance for filler to slip in and I think that’s awesome.  Still, is Ronin Warriors going too quickly if its aiming to maybe wrap up the battle against Talpa right away?  There’s still 29 episodes to go so I guess we’ll see what happens…and have a lot of fun in the process.  See ya back here Friday for more Ronin Warriors.
