It is about damn time.
This past weekend during the Summer Game Fest, a lot of big upcoming titles
(and a Call of Duty Black Ops Sequel no one really wants) were announced. For me, I’ve you’ve read this blog long
enough you know what got me most excited.
After years of rumors, anticipations and a perfect remake of a classic,
Resident Evil: Requiem was revealed to the world with a release date of
February 27, 2026. Yep this is the first
new mainline entry since 2021’s Resident Evil: Village and we’ve got a lot to
talk about with what’s been revealed, what could be waiting in the wings, and
how an often neglected spin off game I’ve never played fits into all of
this. So lets ponder together, these are
my Top 5 Thoughts on the Resident Evil: Requiem Reveal Trailer.
The protagonist of the last few main titles, Ethan
Winters ended up battling some very different Resident Evil enemies: Mold
Monsters, the Psycho Red Neck Family from Hell, towering Vampire Goddesses,
Werewolves, and then some. With Grace
set to visit a very familiar city it looks like we’re going to see some very old
school Resident Evil settings and monsters.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen any protagonist take on a good old fashioned
Zombie (not including the Remakes of RE2 or 3).
The hallways of the presumed hotel that Grace has been sent to
investigate also give off Spencer Mansion vibes so who knows that’s hiding
behind every corner. Requiem could very
well be Resident Evil going back to its roots from a visual POV and there’s
nothing wrong with that.
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard and Resident Evil: Village
saw the spotlight put on the incredibly unlucky Winters family. While Village ended with the sacrifice of
protagonist Ethan Winters to save his baby daughter Rose, the Shadows of Rose
DLC jumped forward years later to an older Rose trying to rid herself of her
mold based powers. It’s still too early
to tell, but it looks like the promise at the end of Village’s main campaign is
going to stay true and leave the Winters clan alone for now. Which I’m actually ok with because much like
everyone else, I’m rearing for some RE adventures with characters I care a lot more
about, speaking of…
We’ll discuss the newly introduced Grace Ashcroft in a
little bit but right now I wanna talk about two long rumored names who didn’t show
up in the new trailer. For a while now,
whispers have been abound that a potential RE9 could see long time favorites
Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine take center stage together in a game for the
first time (at least to my knowledge).
Leon’s a pretty hot name in the franchise right now after the runaway
success of RE4 Remake and Jill hasn’t been a main character in a mainline game
since…Revelations I think? Not to
mention, where Leon goes, Ada Wong is sure to be not far behind. Ignoring the terribleness of Resident Evil:
Death Island, a Leon/Jill (and maybe Ada) dynamic has yet to be explored in
game and it is a long overdue pairing.
Could they still be in the game and just not shown yet?
I’ll admit I got my character names confused when I heard
the name Grace Ashcroft. I confused her
last name with the Ashford family, which would’ve made her connection to the
wider RE universe much more interesting.
But still, Grace does share family with another RE character: Alyssa
Ashcroft, who is one of the main characters in the Resident Evil: Outbreak spin
off. I’ve never played that title but I
know Alyssa was a reporter for the Raccoon City Press and that she is a Raccoon
City survivor. Sadly it looks like she
survived only to perish in another incident that sets the events of Requiem in
motion. I’m not sure how but it would be
nice if they included Outbreak in Requiem’s release so that players unfamiliar
can catch up with that lost Raccoon City side story.
This has got to get any RE fan excited: we’re going back
to Raccoon City. The most iconic
location in the entire franchise is back and this time we’re not in the middle
of the infection…maybe. Theres evidence
we might see some flashbacks to RC but the real draw is seeing a post nuclear
explosion RC. The ruins of the RPD
especially send shivers down the spine.
What secrets still lay within the ruins of the T-Virus’ first major
conquest and what else could have been unearthed afterwards. Grace is definitely not in for a fun time
once she steps back into those streets Next February…and I cant wait to get to
exploring.
