T5W#480-Top 5 Katsucon 2024 Cosplays

We’ve come to that time of the year again Dear Readers, when Halloween is just around the corner.  And, as is tradition here at the Gundam Anime Corner, it’s time to look at the hit cosplays to come out of two of my favorite conventions this year.  Sure I could always do this after the con itself but idk I this time of year is fun to talk about costumes for obvious reasons.  So let’s begin this pseudo two part Top 5 Wednesday my favorite cosplays from a semi cold winter convention earlier this year.  These are my Top 5 Katsucon 2024 Cosplays.

#5-Sailor Zoro
Cosplay is perfect for mashing up different series and genres, from Anime and more.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a cosplay between Sailor Moon and One Piece before but it really works.  The posing and weapons are spot on but it’s the colors on this one that really stand out and help this cosplay pop.  It makes a good argument for the Sailor Senshi to have other forms for different types of combat (think the Dresspheres from Final Fantasy X-2).

#4-Simon + Mecha
When it comes to choosing cosplay favorites, the bigger and rarer the better with me.  Case in point: you still see a lot of Yoko’s but maybe not as many Kamina’s or Simons from Gurren Lagaan.  But I can tell you this, I have never seen someone do Simon plus his little Mecha.  It’s faithfully recreated, especially the face and I’m pretty sure the cosplayer even made this thing to move and not just be a set in place piece.  As we’ll see, this isnt the only Mecha style cosplay on this list and I’d love to see this Simon mecha get into a fun (staged of course) fight scene with other opponents.

#3-Sakura Head aka The Mysterious Pink Demon Bunny
Imagine waking up on the last day of a convention.  You’ve got your stuff together and are ready to head down to the car to pack it up while still recovering from a wild Saturday night…and then you see this thing spot you and start rapidly rushing towards you.  You have no idea what the hell it is, only that it’s covered in Sakura petals, has bunny ears and is hunched over.  Who needs coffee when you have a friend coming at you like this to wake you up?

This terrifying piece of perfection comes from my good friend Ro Danielley and you can see more of it and other fun and nifty cosplays on her IG here: https://www.instagram.com/ro.takon/?hl=en

#2-RX-78-2 Gundam
Like I said about the Simon cosplay above, if I see a Mecha themed cosplay, it’s sure to end up on a Top 5 list like this.  It was tough enough trying to choose which actual character cosplay was my favorite at the unexpected but amazing Gundam Franchise Photoshoot.  However, I had to give my final choice to this recreation of the OG RX-78-2.  Not only is it massive but I love the detail put into it.  This is a Gundam that’s been through several battles and has the scruff and scars to show for it.  Almost makes me wanna play around with giving similar detail to a Gunpla one day (maybe in 2025?)

#1-The Xenomorph
Yooooo this freaking thing WOW.  Just…wow you see this thing pop up on the Gazeebo floor at night looking straight out of the freaking original movie and…AHHHH!!!  If it seems like I’m gushing its because I am.  This is a scary but supremely awesome work of art, complete with tail and a second mouth that does open and close.  I’ve also wound up running into this same cosplay at a couple of other conventions this year including Otakon and Baltimore Comic Con and he’s still getting a ton of attention from everyone wanting a photo with him.  Come on, can you blame anyone for wanting to get a picture with the creature that still reminds us to this day that “in space, no one can hear you scream.”

The cosplayer behind this excellent work got me to tag him after Baltimore Comic Con so be sure to check out Americas Ass Cosplays IG page right here: https://www.instagram.com/americas.ass.cosplay/?hl=en
