Welcome to a world where Dungeon Raids are a daily
occurrence. Many risk all for treasure
or the fame of conquering the terrors within.
Others seek a greater prize: the ultimate monster dish. For Laois the Swordsman, nothing sates the
appetite more than cooking the most dangerous of Dungeon creatures. Together with Elven Spellcaster Marcille,
Locksmith Chilchuck and the Dwarf Warrior Senshi, Laios embarks on a quest to
rescue his sister from the stomach of a Red Dragon. But if theyre gonna succeed, they’ll need to
make sure they’re eating the right food for the right occasion. In the world of Dungeon Food, it’s either eat
or be eaten.
Typically I’m instantly worried when an Anime is
announced with the “Netflix Original Anime” stamp on it.
However, when they aren’t busy trying to
still make 3DCG Anime a thing, Netflix can sometimes make good decisions about
Anime to license, especially if it comes from an Anime Studio that’s provided
them with one of their biggest hits in the past.
Which brings us to todays FIF offering and
the latest work from everyones favorite Anime studio, Studio Trigger.
An Anime that focuses on cooking up a storm
in a Dungeon seems right up their bizarre alley.
So how is the first episode as an appetizer?
Of all the Trigger works I’ve looked at over the years
including Kill La Kill, Little Witch Academia, Darling in the Franxx and
Promare, Delicious in Dungeon’s premiere seems pretty subdued for the most
part.
There’s very little frenetic and
wildly paced action, which is usually Triggers bread and butter.
Instead, the first episode plays out like a
Food Network Fantasy Edition.
More than half
of the dialogue is focused on how to cook the best meal with the Dungeon
monsters that are either poisonous or seemingly inedible (definitely the latter
for Marcille who is the pickiest of eaters, which makes her kind of annoying,
which is a shame cause she’s really cute…moving on).
And you know what?
It’s surprisingly soothing and the dishes
Laois and Senshi cook up are things I’d legit want to try if I could make them
myself.
Anime does know how to do food
porn like nothing else.
All of the food talk and images of meals you want to sink
your teeth into kind of overshadow the vague backstory of this world of
Dungeons.
And for all of Laois’ love for
eating the uneatable, he seems to be forgetting or overlooking a very crucial thing…oh
yeah HIS SISTER IS CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF BEING DIGESTED BY A FREAKING RED
DRAGON!!!
On the one hand, yeah, this is
supposed to be a comedy fantasy adventure but come on man, show some concern
for your sibling that might be dead soon rather than looking at Man Eating
plant monsters and wondering what you could make out of them.
I’ll be honest, the spell of the Dungeon
Monsters Cookbook being explained by Senshi distracted me from the main quest
as well, so I don’t think I have any right to complain about that after
all.
Like I said, Delicious in Dungeon’s subject matter seems
perfect for Trigger to tackle.
It’s
bizarre, it’s funny and while I’m sure there’s gonna be some action, pumping
the breaks on the normally mile a second action spectacle and focusing on
something like cooking is a nice change of pace for them.
Trigger might really have another big hit on
their hands with this one.
If nothing
else, it made me think that if the Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts had gone this
route with its premise, it might’ve actually turned out way better.
Oh well, more food and fun for the Anime
fantasy world.
And with that, the first half of First Impression
Friday’s 9
th Season comes to a close.
The season will pick up in August after I’m
back from Otakon.
Til then, look out for
announcements of a new special event that will fill its Friday slot until its
return to the Gundam Anime Corner.
