T5W#476-Top 5 Upcoming Netflix Video Game Adaptions

Well Netflix has certainly been hard at work, haven’t they?  Last week during GeekedWeek we got a slew of new trailers for upcoming animated project all centered around popular Video Game franchises, many of which I either follow extensively or are personal favorites that I’ve played.  I’d heard about a couple of these but one or two were total surprises (one in particular for all of us and in a very good way).  Could be a good time for Netflix to capitalize on their corner of the Video Game Adaptation market the same way Amazon and HBO have with Fallout and The Last of Us respectively and maybe not crash and burn as hard as Paramount did with Halo.  Anyway, let’s take a closer look at what’s headed our way with the Top 5 Upcoming Netflix Video Game Adaptions.

#5-Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
Of all the titles on this list, the ones coming the soonest, mid October 2024.  The new Tomb Raider series is a direct continuation of the rebooted Survivor Trilogy (Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider).  All three are mostly stellar games (Shadow not so much) and they have given me my favorite iteration of Lara Croft: a gorgeous and powerful survivor still sexy as hell even without her more emphasized assets.  It also looks like this new adventure will bridge the two versions of Lara Croft from the early days to the duel gun wielding beauty we first met in the 90s.  Also, the MCU’s Captain Carter, Hayley Atwell, is voicing Lara and having her is always a win (though I do really like Camilla Ludlum’s portrayal of her in the games a lot).

#4-Devil May Cry
Ever since Castlevania hit it big, there have been talks about the same creative team tackling a new animated adaptation of Devil May Cry (there’s already been one Anime series already).  Curiously, they’ve said that it could even become part of a shared universe with Castlevania…somehow.  Those details have kind of faded, which is probs for the best.  And now we’ve gotten our first look at Devil Hunter Dante hacking and slashing his way through Demons and armed soldiers while skydiving from a destroyed plane.  Looks about the right kind of DMC crazy fun.  What really got my attention though is Dante’s voice.  Apparently, Reuben Langdon, who’s voiced Dante since Devil May Cry 3, isnt coming back to voice him in this adaptation.  Instead, it sounds like Johnny Yong Bosch, who voices Nero in the franchise, is taking up the reins…which is weird not gonna lie.

#3-Splinter Cell: Deadwatch
I’m a casual fan of Tom Clancy media, mostly the Jack Ryan Films and TV Series and the Rainbow Six Video Games.  Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series has been a stealth genre favorite since it’s first entry on the Xbox and the titular stealth bad ass Sam Fisher has continued to make regular appearances in his own games and in Rainbow Six.  Since we don’t seem to be getting a Metal Gear Solid Anime anytime soon, Splinter Cell is probably the next best thing.  The cryptic first reveal shows Fisher floating underwater Skyfall style (and no Michael Ironside voice).  How did he get here and will animation do his top secret special missions justice?

#2-Castlevania: Nocturne (Season 2)
While it didn’t hit the high marks of its parents shows stellar First Season, Castlevania: Nocturne was still a very welcome return to the universe of one of the very best Video Game Adaptations of all time.  The end of Season One saw major shake ups for Richter Belmont and his team of wayward Demon Slayers but most importantly, they have back up.  Alucard is back, looking misty and ghostly as his Symphony of the Night portrayal and he’s ready to kick some serious ass with the next generation of Belmonts.  January 2025 cannot come soon enough for the next chapter in this bloody good Vampire epic.

#1-New Cyberpunk 2077 Anime
This is the biggest surprise by far and we know pretty much nothing about it.  Netflix only shared a seconds long digitized trailer that made it loud and clear a return to Night City is inevitable.  There are a ton of questions but the biggest one: Is this a sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or is it an entirely new story altogether?  Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became a massive hit for Anime fans and even if you were on the fence about Cyberpunk 2077, if you watched Edgerunners, you loved the hell out of it.  Heck, it found a nice spot on my Best Reviewed Titles of 2023 last year, just barely missing a perfect 10/10.  Also is Trigger animating again?  We’ve got questions and we don’t need answers, we just need this project in full ASAP!!!
