Emily’s a girl full of imagination and a lover of fairy
tales. Never once did she imagine she’d
actually end up in one…sort of. When a
tiny creature named Candy falls from the sky in a magical book, Emily discovers
she has been chosen, along with four other young girls, to save their world and
another from a dark force. But first,
Emily and Candy will have to unite these other guardians to form The Glitter
Force. With all this boundless energy
between them, how can they possibly fail?
This title’s been floating on Netflix for a while now. I’ve heard nothing but bad things so I had to
give it a shot. Netflix has seen a
couple of successes with original Anime like Knights of Sidonia and The Seven
Deadly Sins. So a magical girl Anime has
to have some value, right…right?
WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA!!!????
It's been a long time since an Anime ticked me off this
much. In the wide world of Magical Girl
Anime, there are two high bars that have already been set (maybe three). There’s Sailor Moon, which is still one of
the Queens of the Genre and Anime in general.
And there’s Madoka Magica, which took the Magical Girl concept and turned
it on it’s head, making one helluva amazingly tragic but wonderfully told
story. After such progress, how can
anyone allow Glitter Force to happen?
It’s way too bubbly and cheesy, doesn’t take itself the least bit
seriously and is to the point where it’s just downright annoying. The dub isn’t doing it any favor either. Honestly, I think I was done when Emily
dropped, “This is freaky deaky,” in the middle of her introduction to the
class.
Now I’ve looked it up.
This is an Anime that exists in Japan, called Smile Pretty Cure, and is
apparently very popular. If there was an
original Japanese dub attached to this “Netflix Exclusive” it might be
better. Right now though, coming from
Saban aka the studio that brought Power Rangers into existence, this is a step
backwards for Anime in America. We’ve
come a long way from bad dubs like this one.
Not sure if this was done on purpose to further sell it to young girls. But an average Anime fan trying to give this
one a go will just end up feeling angry and disappointed by the end of the
first episode.
So no, hell no, I am not continuing with this one. If someone out there likes it, more power to
you. I like magical girl shows as I’ve
stated above. And chances are, I’d want
to watch one of them in marathon mode just to erase this first episode of
Glitter Force from my memory. It’s like
those who wrote the English Dub watched Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura,
merged them together and threw in a bunch of pop culture references and said,
“This will work.” No…just no. And no I don’t think it’s a matter of me
being an older fan…I just think this show is bad…real bad.
