2026 has seen yet another incredibly showing of Anime for
the world to enjoy. From the return of
Jujutsu Kaisen and Ghost in the Shell to newcomer champions like Daemons of the
Shadow Realm & Marriagetoxin, there’s no shortage of favorites to peruse
this year. With Summer 2026 winding down, all eyes look to the new titans of
the Fall to take the stage and show us what they’ve got. Old friends return, new stories begin and new
iconic characters make their way to the big screen. And just what am I looking forward to in the
next couple of months? Let’s find out on
todays Top 5 Wednesday as I count down my Top 5 Big Titles Coming Fall 2026.
So I’m putting this at #5 because it is a bit of a cheat
and it’s not Anime related.
Doesn’t change
the fact that this is still one of my most anticipated movies of 2026.
We’ve had a good year for massive spectacle scifi/fantasy
with Project Hail Mary, The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three is still on the
way.
The eyes of the world are on
Godzilla now more than ever after Minus One’s historic Oscar win a few years
back.
So there’s a lot of pressure on
Minus Zero to deliver the goods.
Will we
see more than one Godzilla?
Is the King
of the Monsters finally getting the chance to face another Kaiju in battle for
the first time since Final Wars (Angirus please)?
Will this movie break box office records when
it lands in the US same time as Japan?
I’m
already prepped and ready for this one.
#4-Magic Knight Rayearth
The rebirth and reanimation of classic titles continues
with this CLAMP classic of three school girls transported to a mystical realm
to save it as magically powered guardians.
I’ve only seen a little bit of Rayearth in the past (might even have the
original series on VHS somewhere).
But
much like with other titles getting this new updated treatment, it could be a
good jump on point for new fans while also scratching that nice nostalgia itch
for those who grew up watching the original in the 90s.
Otakon had several standees of the main
magical girl trio peppered throughout the con so I’m sure they were helping to build
hype for this one.
And speaking of resurrected
titles from days gone by…
#3-Ranma ½ (Season 3)
Arguably the best of these newly relaunched classic
projects, Ranma ½ is one of the few Anime I’ve been keeping up with on a regular
basis in these busy times.
Season Two
doubled down on everything that made it’s return such a hilarious gem with new
faces to challenge Ranma and new beauties to win his heart.
Season 3 looks to be hyping up a bigger
showdown than ever before between Ranma and his frenemy rival Ryoga.
I get that Ryoga is desperate for Akane’s
heart but what’s pushed him to really have it in for Ranma this time?
October’s coming quick so we wont have to
wait long to find out.
#2-Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II
Back in 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners did the unthinkable:
it not only became one of the greatest Video Game adaptations of all time, it
took the tarnished legacy of a failed game launch and breathed new life into
it.
The worlds been begging for a sequel
of some sort but how the hell do you do that when (Spoiler Alert) most of the
original cast is dead?
The answer: focus
on a new band of desperate maniacs wacked out of their over teched minds looking
for glory, redemption or just an excuse for over the top violence.
Edgreunners II looks to be doubling down on
the mayhem and carnage that Studio Trigger was born to bring to life.
But can it match the heart, soul and
heartbreak of the groundbreaking original?
#1-The Apothecary Diaries (Season 3 & The Movie)
It is absolutely crazy just how huge a title about a
beautiful Apothecary solving medical mysteries in Ancient China has
become.
But after it dropped on Netflix,
this became the series Anime fans and their non Anime loving parents could
enjoy together.
Well Maomao is back with
a double hitter this fall.
First up is
the long awaited first half of Season 3 which sees Maomao and Jinshi dealing
with a Locust plague and a new wave of political conspiracies.
And during the mid season break, Maomao heads
to the big screen this Christmas with The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Emperor’s
Treasure.
Given its popularity outside
of the core Anime crowd, something tells me it might not make Avengers:
Doomsday or Dune: Part Three numbers but if it is getting a stateside release,
audiences might have a different alternative to Doctor Doom and Paul Atredies
to look forward to.
Plus come on, we all
could use more Maomao in our lives.
