We got a ton of big Video Game trailers and announcements
last week from Silent Hill getting in on the big Remake craze to a bloody and
epic new look at Final Fantasy XVI.
Arguably the biggest news that kind of pushed everything else to the
side was Capcoms mind blowing presentation of not just a new trailer for
Resident Evil 4 Remake but also gameplay footage too. This has easily become my most anticipated
game of 2023 (with Final Fantasy XVI up there too, damn that trailer looked
nice if a bit intense). Seeing as how
I’ve been spending most of this month in the Resident Evil universe because of
my RE Retrospective Special, I’m surprised I haven’t dedicated more time to RE
themed Top 5s. That changes today as for
today’s Top 5 Wednesday I take a look at my Top 5 Moments from the 2nd
Resident Evil 4 Remake Story and Gameplay Trailers. As the title implies, I’ll be looking at
moments from both the new and more fleshed out story trailer and the
accompanying gameplay presentation.
Let’s get to it.
I know I talked about this in my previous observations of
the RE4 Remake Reveal Trailer but it really seems that much like how Village
took aesthetic inspirations from the original RE4, the Remake is doing the same
thing with Village. The look of the
forest Leon trudges through and the cabins he enters feel eerily similar to how
Ethan Winters first enters his own snow covered hell hole a couple of years
back. With RE: Village getting a 3rd
Person Mode in its big DLC drop, I feel like playing through that game again in
the new perspective could be a good primer for entering Leon’s new
adventure. Sure Ethan cant roundhouse
kick anything but it would be cool to see Chris Redfield’s counter punch look
just like Carlos Olivera’s from RE3 Remake.
While RE4 Remake will follow in the footsteps of the
previous Remake endevours for RE2 and RE3, the entire wheel isn’t being totally
reinvented, especially when it comes to the unique set of baddies Leon must
face. And it looks like every major
enemy is accounted for including main antagonist Osmund Sadler and his two
right hands, Ramon Salazar and Village Chief Bitores Mendes (no sign of Jack
Krauser yet). We also get to see the newly
designed El Giagante, who looks freaking awesome, and a tease at the Berzerker
Las Plagas aka the ones who’s parasites burst out of their heads and try to
attack with that razor sharp tail. Oh
and don’t forget that not so friendly Del Lago, who’s famous water fight with
Leon rival the showdown between Chief Brody and the titular shark at the end of
Jaws. Still waiting to see what my
favorite enemies, the Regenerators look like.
I think it’s gonna be a whole new terrifying thrill trying to take those
things on again.
Two of RE4’s most important supporting characters got
mere glimspes in the teaser trailer but got their full fledged first
appearances in the new one. Luis…I wont
lie, I feel like he looks a bit more menacing and scary as opposed to his suave
and handsome original design. Luis was
always a bit of a mystery in the original game and a bit of a wild card. His new design in RE4 Remake feels like the
opposite of what they did with Carlos Olivera in RE3 Remake, the scruffier look
backfiring and making him look less heroic and trustworthy. As for the lovely Ada Wong, while we still
don’t have a good look at her full outfit, what’s most noteworthy about her
appearance in the trailer is that it looks like she’ll have scenes with both
Leon and Ashley together, which is a change, I don’t remember Ada and Ashley
sharing much time together in the original, if at all. Also, Ada’s voice actress from Resident Evil
2 doesn’t seem to be reprising her role and I know that’s something most fans
of her well done character in that game might not be ok with. Time will tell I suppose.
Ashley Graham sort of gets a bad rep amongst Resident
Evil fans. Escort missions are no ones
favorite in Video Games and Ashley is often prone to getting herself injured,
snatched away or just wearing down players with her constant whining. Well, it looks like the poster girl for
escort missions is getting a bit of an overhaul, or at least something more
tolerable. RE4 Remake has shown us
several new scenes with Leon’s primary mission objective, complete with a nice
new look at potential scenes that delve more into Ashley’s initial capture by
Los Illuminados. The new trailer,
however, continues to expand on the new changes in store for Ashley, including
a chilling scene where she seems forced by the Las Plagas within her to aim a
gun at someone, maybe Leon. Looks like
she’ll be more depth beyond complaining this time around.
Honestly, no matter how little gameplay was shown, there
was no way Capcom couldn’t at least include a small glimpse of Resident Evil
4’s most infamous set piece: the opening Village attack. Like then rest of the presented footage, this
didn’t just look like an HD Remake.
While Villagers still attacked en masse and familiar cutscenes returned,
everything looks brand new. From
dropping lanterns on enemies in barns to the crazy and truly scary eyes poking
out of the Chainsaw Man’s bag to Leon being able to block said chainsaw with
his combat knife, my heart was racing again just watching what I have to look
forward too. Best moment, hands down
though, was seeing that Leon is still able to roundhouse kick stunned enemies,
potentially knocking others off their approach too. The only thing that would make this recreated
masterpiece perfect is if they include Leon’s famous finishing line when the
fight suddenly ends. Anyone up for
Bingo?
