The Kannagi’s are a proud and strict family of Flame
Magic Users. When he is unable to defeat
his young cousin, Ayano, in battle, Kazuma Kannagi is stripped of his title as
“heir” and is banished from the Kannagi Clan.
Four years later, a mysterious foe is using Wind Magic to kill off
various members of the Kannagi Clan. The
prime suspect is Kazuma, recently returned and now practicing powerful Wind
Magic that puts him on par with those who shunned him. Ayano vows to kill Kazuma to avenge her Clan
but only Kazuma is aware that someone else is pulling the strings behind this
forced conflict.
Brooding Anime Protagonist.
Cute, random haired color high school girl
with magical powers.
Espers and Magic
Users.
Kaze No Stigma could be mistaken
for an early 90s Anime sans the copious amounts of blood, not that the first
episode doesn’t lack its fair share.
And
yet, like many Anime I come across sometimes, it not only fails to bring
anything new or unique to the table, but what’s presented is…well kind of
annoying and irksome and only a small portion of that falls on the
protagonist.
It’s the supporting cast
that are a major pain.
Ah, Studio Gonzo, we meet again.
To be fair though, Kaze No Stigma hardly
looks like one of their worst animated outings.
Character designs look alright and the animation looks polished
enough.
No, the production value is fair
but it’s the story and characters that hurt Kaze No Stigma right out the
gate.
Ayano might be a draw because of
her vibrant pink hair and cute character design (magic sword wielding school
girl in a short skirt), but she isn’t the most likeable of girls.
This mostly falls on her upbringing and
therefore, how her family handles itself.
The Kannagi’s are a bunch of stuck up asshats who feel their the top of
the food chain.
Their heartless
dismissal of Kazuma as a kid and how they instantly label him as a sin against
the family once he returns from a hiatus rubs me the wrong way, such arrogance
and heartless disdain.
Kazuma might fit
the brooding pretty boy protagonist trope but I cant help but sympathize with
him.
If your former family hated your
guts and instantly wanted you dead the second you stepped back into town, even
accusing you of deaths you had nothing to do with, I’d be pretty cheesed
too.
NGL, it might be worth checking out
a couple more episodes just to see how badly Kazuma can show up his family and
embarrass the hell out of them.
But I cant say that Kaze No Stigma really grabs me in the
first place.
Ayano is annoying and her
family, and Kazuma’s, make the show feel very uninviting when there’s such an
unlikeable air about it.
Kazuma getting
some payback can only entice me but so much to continue on.
Then again, like I said, this isn’t anything
new I’ve seen.
Just wonder how long it
will take Ayano to pull her head out of the sand and see that her family is
full of crap and she should cut Kazuma some slack…huh, guess I care about the
family drama more than I thought.
IDK,
we’ll see what happens with this one.
