Last weekend, the long awaited fifth chapter in the
Predator franchise, Prey, dropped on Hulu and HOLY F**** S*** IT WAS
AWESOME!!!! Seriously while the other
Predator sequels are kind of guilty pleasures, Prey is without a doubt a best
since the original and much of that is thanks to a back to basics approach for
the legendary Monster and a powerful performance by Amber Midthunder as
Comanche Warrior, Naru. Seeing this
beautiful and fierce warrior take on a foe from beyond the stars reminded me of
a Top 5 I did when the last Predator Movie came out in 2018 (check that list
here: http://gundamanimeblog.blogspot.com/2018/09/t5w161-top-5-anime-characters-who-could.html). It made me want to choose another 5 Anime
characters who could go head to head with the ugly MFer…and wonder how I could
make it different this time. Then it
clicked: Gundam Pilots. Plenty of my
favorite Mobile Suit Pilots are equally deadly in and out of their
cockpits. So what would happen if they
were shot down in a jungle hunting ground and had to deal with the
extraterrestrial game hunter? Well let’s
find out today as I count down my Top 5 Gundam Pilots Who Could Take on The
Predator (Sans Mobile Suits).
Mikazuki is one of the more unique characters in the
Gundam franchise. He’s a lead who
teeters the line between hero and villain because of the way he carries
himself. Usually, he’s pretty chill,
popping his Mars seeds like candy. But
when it comes to killing, Mika will not hesitate for a second, especially if
the order comes directly from his bestie, Orga.
And if you really tick him off, Mika will go full on beast mode, showing
off abnormally superior strength, probably from years of conditioning as a
child soldier plus the augments he’s had to be able to pilot a Mobile
Suit. Mika’s as stone cold and mostly
emotionless as they come. The Predator
might have a real challenge trying to take this little guy on. Who knows, maybe Mika would be better at
stalking him than vice versa.
Really if you wanted a team similar to Arnold
Schwarzzenegers from the first Predator film to hunt the big alien hunter, the
08th Team is a good choice (Michel dies first though…or survives
cause the Predator doesn’t think he’s that much of a threat). At the heart of this team is Shiro, who ends
up having to act on his own during several missions getting separated from the
squad. To make up for a lack of back up,
Shiro uses ingenuity and out of the box thinking, able to lure Zeon Mobile Suit
teams into various traps and disabling them without being in his own
Gundam. Kind of sounds a bit like
Arnie’s Dutch having to create his own primitive weapons and traps to take on
the Predator at the end of the first film.
Shiro might not be the most physically imposing threat, but his
craftiness makes him the perfect adversary.
In the world of G Gundam, Mobile Fighters are equipped
with motion capturing cockpits, which enables the mecha to mimic the moves and
fighting styles of their pilots. Domon
Kashhu isn’t just an expert in Hand to Hand Combat, he’s also inheritor of the
King of Hearts moniquer of the Shuffle Alliance. He can outrun and catch bullets and land some
pretty powerful blows against many foes, even those twice his size. A guy who can basically be considered a
living weapon is the perfect kind of challenge for The Predator. It might even forgo its use of advanced
weapons for a chance to spar one on one with Domon and see whether his alien
claws or Domon’s Burning Fists will come out on top. Also we saw Predators have a penchant for
sword duels, so Domon getting to use his rusted sword that can cut through
rocks to cut through advanced Alien armor would be a sight to see.
#2-Ali Al Sachez (Mobile Suit Gundam 00)
While there are several of Gundam 00’s pilots like
Setsuna or either Lockon Stratos’ who could give the Predator a run for his
money, my choice from the Anno Dominai timeline is Setsuna’s twisted mentor,
Ali Al Sachez. Sachez is a total
freaking maniac who will do anything to accomplish his mission and get paid,
from coercing children into committing terrorist acts to taking entire planes
hostage and even burning down entire cities single handidly. Those latter acts he does with Mobile Suits
but seeing how quickly he cut down two of the three Trinity siblings in the
blink of an eye, Sachez is no slouch with a knife. Simply put, Sachez is a full blooded killer
and the Predators will take on anyone with a thirst for battle, even the ones
who get a thrill from doing harm to others.
The ultimate freedom fighter from the Space Colonies,
Heero was, like many other Gundam leads, bred to be a soldier from a very young
age. While he can blow things up just
fine with a buster rifle from any of his various Wing or Wing Zero Gundams,
Heero is a Demolition man all on his own.
Heero will plan out every part of his battle strategy down to the most
minute details and has learned from failure how to readjust and compensate with
needed. If he were sent in to face The
Predator, Heero would come packing with a ton of explosives and a few choice
rifles, even if he thinks his trust side arm is enough. I can imagine a Predator entering a killzone
Heero has set up, only to be consumed by massive explosions. Would they finish him off? Probably not but that’s what Heero has the
self destruct device in his buried Gundam for…he even has his own creepy laugh
he can taunt the Predator with before he sets it off.
