Greetings Dear Readers.
It’s been a minute since I did an upcoming features update. Against all odds, Otakon came and went
amazingly (you can see the some of the highlights right here: http://gundamanimeblog.blogspot.com/2022/08/t5w364-top-5-otakon-2022-moments.html).
Now the rest of the year awaits. I had one major idea for another Comparison
Project this year and while I’d hoped to get it going just after Otakon, 2022
has been rough, especially this Summer and the weeks leading up to Otakon. I think I can still make it happen and maybe
get it going by September but we’ll see.
For now I wont reveal what that Special Project is. For now, I’m gonna focus on the reviews
coming to the Anime Corner in the coming months. As with last year, I’m going back to one review
per week every Monday, baring certain special circumstances. Also, while First Impression Friday’s most
recent season ended a couple of weeks back, I wont rule out a special
Miniseries Event for October given the host of premieres coming that month (I’ll
talk more about that in a Top 5 in a couple of weeks). Anyway, rambling done, onto the Coming
Attractions.
Originally I had intended to have Tenchi Muyo kick off
Year 9 of the Gundam Anime Corner back in April. However, in a bit of a time crunch I pushed
it up to January so I didn’t intend for the break between Tenchi shows to be
this long. Still, starting Monday we
return to the saga of the luckiest Bachelor in all of Anime for a new adventure…and
by new I mean the TV Version of the original OVA, Tenchi Universe, with new
characters, a new storyline and a longer runtime…also unlike the 2 OVAs I reviewed
back in January, this story is also complete (plus two Movies). More action, more comedy, same hapless Tenchi
being dragged across the galaxy by six Alien beauties all after his heart. But this isn’t the last time we’ll see Mr.
Masaki at the Anime Corner as we’ll see him back in December for Tenchi in
Tokyo plus the Tenchi Movie Trilogy (more on that in October or November when I
do another update).
Ever since this adaptation was announced, it’s been
pretty hush hush with details. I wasn’t even
sure how the episode count was until I loaded it up on Netflix at launch. Clocking in at a surprising 6 episodes, that’s
enough time to fill out two open slots I’ve had in September for a long time
now (if it were longer I’d probably have placed this in November and moved
Blade Runner: Black Lotus into 2023).
But yep, at last the prequel to the megahit Gambling Anime gets the
Anime treatment with Kakegurui Twin. It’s
a year before Yumeko’s beauty and crazy graces the halls of Hyakkaou Academy and
Mary Saotome has just shown up on the scene.
There’s a host of new and (for now) exclusive characters witnessing the
rise of Ms. Saotome and I have to wonder where most of them go by the time
Yumeko arrives to shake things up. With
such a short adaptation, I don’t know how many answers we’ll get. But hey, this will still tied us over until a
Third Season of Kakegurui ever turns up.
Blood-C & Blood: The Last Vampire (October)
Originally, these were both meant to be reviewed Last
October for Halloween. But then
Castlevania wrapped up and I was really excited to finally do a full series
review of it. So I pushed my October 2021 plans back to October 2022 (and one
title has been pushed even further to Halloween 2023). I always try to select something spooky,
scary and maybe a little bloody for the Halloween Season and I certainly picked
a particularly bloody franchise to look at.
First up is Blood-C, which tells the story of Saya, a cheerful high
school girl who moonlights as a Monster slaying defender of the night. Then it’s the short film that inspired Blood-C,
the arthouse classic Blood: The Last Vampire.
How well does the most recent iteration stack up against it’s classic
predecessor? Find out in October.
Like I said above, I always try and pick something a bit
scary for the month of October and try to schedule something special for
Halloween itself. After getting a long
awaited sneak peak at Otakon in 2021, I finally got my hands on a copy of
Doomed Megalopolis, the title I always saw on my Blockbuster Anime shelf but
never could rent because I’d never have been able to watch it as a kid. And based on that Otakon viewing, I can see
why. An M.Bison looking villain utilizes
all his psychic powers to make a the lives of a family of Espers a living hell
for decades, all to attain the goal of ultimate power. I’m looking forward to the full chaos of this
staple 90’s OVA that highlights everything that made Anime cool in that early
part of the decade. Will its nightmarish
gore keep me awake at night? Find out
this Halloween. Til then, you can check
out the First Impression I did last year right after I saw it right here (http://gundamanimeblog.blogspot.com/2021/08/fif132-doomed-megalopolis.html)
And that about covers things. Naturally, Top 5 Wednesdays will also continue. And as for that “Special Project,” gimme a
few weeks to maybe sort through some things and maybe something will pop up in
September or even October, depends on how I plan it out (it’s something I’ve
been thinking about for a while but haven’t exactly cracked. Everything kicks off Monday with the Premiere
of Tenchi Universe, right here at the Gundam Anime Corner. See ya then everyone.
