It’s barely a couple of days in but 2019 feels so refreshing
at the moment. Part of this is thanks to
looking ahead at some upcoming Anime releases.
2019 is going to be a crazy big year for Anime. There’s sure to be a lot of original works,
or more shows based on light novels ive never heard of. But crap are there a ton of series
continuations coming that im absolutely pumped for. So for this weeks Top 5 Wednesday, let’s see
what lies ahead in the year of Akira so I can list out the shows and flicks im
looking forward to the most. These are
my Top 5 Most Anticipated Anime of 2019.
#5-Psycho Pass:
Sinners of the System (January 2019-March 2019)
It’s been a little bit since we last heard from the
Psycho Pass corner of the Anime world.
The franchise has had a bit of an uneven track record. After a brilliant first season, the second
season threatened to crash its legacy right into the ground. That would have been the case had the first
movie not been a decent recovery. Now a
new team of writers is bringing the franchise back with three new movies set to
be released over three months. Crime and Punishment finds Ginoza
teamed up with everyone least favorite pain in the ass Shimotsuki. First
Guardian will see minor Season 2 character Sugo paired up with Gino’s
father Masaoka. And On the Other Side of Love and Hate will see us checking back in
with Kogame. Could these films right the
wrongs of Season Two (especially in Shimotsuki’s case) and maybe pave the way
for a potential third season of the TV Series?
Either way, more Psycho Pass is always a good thing…unless its more like
Season Two, in which case God help us all.
#4-Code Geass:
Lelouch of the Resurrection (February 2019)
Ive been worried about this one since the moment it was
announced. Why mess up a good thing,
especially when that good thing was the brilliant finale to Code Geass R2? Lelouch is dead right? How could he have
survived his well executed death? Was THAT Lelouch C.C. was talking to on that
cart at the end of R2? The more I think
about it, the more I wonder if Code Geass R3 is going to tarnish the franchises
legacy worse than the first 3/4ths of Code Geass R2. But hey it could also pull off an unexpected
win. We’ll find out early next year when
Lelouch returns…in some form or another.
#3-Kakegurui XX
(January 2019)
I freaking loved the first season of Kakegurui, so much
that when it popped up on Netflix I spent the whole day reviewing it for March
this year. Yumeko Jabami made every
episode a delight to watch, even if the rules of the many games flew right over
my head. Still Season 1 ended on a so-so
note, so much it was basically guaranteeing there would be a Season 2. Well Kakegurui XX is coming in January, which
means we’ll hopefully have it by Summer 2019 here in the states and you’d
better believe I’ll be reviewing it for the Anime Corner. What other ways will students inadvertedly
find to fuel Yumeko’s gambling desires and how much more is she going to rock the
school with her craziness? I cannot wait
for my Dark Queen to return.
#2-One Punch Man
Season 2 (April 2019)
This is going to be one of those shows that will be
greatly tested next year. The first
season of One Punch Man is almost a flawless, legendary adventure that didn’t
tie up everything too nicely at the end.
That said, why have we had to wait almost 4 years for the continuing
adventures of Saitama and Genos? One
could argue that a show in a similar situation, Attack on Titan, suffered from
a prolonged production which kind of killed the massive hype train from its
debut season (though there are just as many who say Season 2 and 3 of Titan
have been pretty good). Still, One Punch
Man’s satire on the Superhero genre is amazing and if the character of Saitama
remains pretty much the same, along with the no holds bared action, I think
we’re going to be in for another fun as hell ride. And speaking of Anime that challenge
superhero norms…
#1-My Hero
Academia Season 4 (October 2019)
The first season on My Hero Academia was…just ok, there I
said it. Season 2 and 3, however, kicked
things into high gear, to the point where I finally understood why this show
has become the King of the Anime of the Shonen Anime community, besting One
Piece and Boruto. With a new term begun,
greater and familiar evils on the rise and a new understanding between two of
the shows primary characters, what lies ahead for Deku and the rest of UA Class
1-A? How will the newly introduced “Big
Three of U.A.” play a role in things going forward? Will One for All manage to escape? Will
Shimura put a new, insane plan into action?
Will Deku tell anyone else about the power All Might gave him? Will the world find a way to believe in
Heroes again after the battle that forced All Might to sacrifice his
powers? I’m so excited I might have to
peak ahead at the Manga. My Hero
Academia has been the feel good Anime hit of the year since it began. Barring any weird changes, Season 4 should be
able to keep things going strong…even if we have to wait til FREAKING OCTOBER
to finally get it (could be worse I suppose).
