As graduation
draws near, Megumin and Yunyun find themselves with just enough points to
attain their magical dreams. That could
be a problem though with Dark God Monsters stepping up their attacks on their
village. When Komekko and Yunyun find
themselves in trouble, Megumin sees the chance to seize her destiny and release
the power within: the power of Explosion magic.
Soon the demons of the world (and her village) will feel her fury. This is where Megumin’s legend truly begins.
The second week
of the KonoSuba Megumin Prequel covered a lot of ground this week, a surprising
amount actually. I mean In know this is
only supposed to be 12 episodes but wow you’d think things were wrapping up after
only 6, which is both a good and not 100% bad thing. I’m happy we still have time left to spend
with Megumin’s origins but I’ve gotta say, seeing everything come together and
seeing Megumin take her first major steps towards the maniac mad bomber Kazuma
somehow relies on put a huge smile on my face.
While the show is
a Megumin starring vehicle, you cant ignore the unsung heroines that are
Komekko and Yunyun. The former is one of
the best little sisters with boundless energy, the ability to stare danger in
the face and not be the least bit afraid and her unwavering support of her big
sis. Komekko is so endearing that even
after you learn she inadvertedly (and expertly) solved the puzzle that played a
part in all the demonic mayhem plaguing the Crimson Demons, you cant help but
say “DAMMIT IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO STAY MAD AT YOU!!!” And Yunyun, what a sweetheart. Despite evidence Megumin wishes didn’t exist,
Yunyun is arguably her best friend, more than her forced self proclaimed
rival. Yunyun stepping up to gain magic
so Megumin can save her points balances Megumin hesitating a bit too long to
save her younger sister from danger but it works out in the end. Plus, we now know it was Yunyun who gave
Megumin her iconic cape, just one of the many moments that nearly moved me to
tears this set (along with Megumin and Komekko getting one last cuddle in).
Megumin continued
her reign of terror amongst her classmates and neighbors and finally achieved
her dream, which like so much else I thought would come much later in the
series. You’ve gotta love how Megumin
will ruin anythings life to get what she wants in the end but once more, you
cant argue with the results. Seeing her
set off her first explosion spell was everything it was meant to be, complete
with beautiful animation to boot. As
icing on the cake, no one believes Megumin can use Explosion Magic so she’s
practicing in secret, at night and blaming it on a “mystery bomber” who could
be a General for the Devil King. Her
dedication to the lie is one of the funniest bits of the series, even more so
that everyone believes her (save for Yunyun who knows the truth).
All of this
culminated in a surprisingly tearful scene where we saw Megumin bid farewell to
her sister, her rival and her classmates to begin her journey. I’ve already covered the Komekko stuff and
Yunyun’s promise to stop Megumin if she becomes the next Devil King was really
good. It sucks to see Megumin’s
classmates seemingly moving on from the story.
Sure they haven’t graduated like Megumin and Yunyun have but I guess
that goes with my expectations that we’d be spending more time at Red Prison to
get to know these girls a bit more.
Still, it was nice to see them part ways as friends with Arue and
Funifura offering the last two pieces of Megumin’s signature look: her eyepatch
(which does nothing) and her staff (which does a lot more). This parting of the ways was so well done and
rather emotional for KonoSuba. It has an
air of finality to it which feels off cause there’s still half a series
left. Still, not one to ignore when a
show does this kind of thing well so bravo Explosion, bravo.
Still it’s a good
thing that we aren’t wrapping up yet cause I do have questions. Chomusuke (who finally got her proper name)
is actually a demon? Specifically the
Demon Wolbach who may have been set free by Komekko? Was this ever established in the main
series? I do like that she is now so
attached to Megumin she refused to go with the demon Arnes. Granted that didn’t stop Megumin from trying
to sell her for enough money to leave the village (that’s some classic KonoSuba
comedy there, Kazuma would do that with any of the girls in a heartbeat,
especially Aqua). Speaking of Arnes, is
she done? Last we saw she was chased
away because of her disdain and genuine discomfort for the aura of the men of
the Crimson Demon village. If she’s
supposed to be an upper level demon as Megumin suggests, kind of a bad look for
her to be driven off so easily. Guess
we’ll have to see if Arnes or this Wolbach revelation are handled here or are
just being setup for future KonoSuba seasons.
While we’ve
reached the mid point, KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! felt
like it was coming to an end with a hilarious, action packed and even heartfelt
set of episodes. The bonds of frienemies
shinned as bright as the first explosions of Megumin’s career and the stage is
closer to being set for her inevitable run in with Kazuma (I do like how
Soketto’s crystal ball blured out all of the main series footage, nice
touch). So if Megumin’s not jumping
right in to meet her unfortunate band of traveling companions, what’s
next? We’ll find out Next Monday with
