The first official (full) trailer for Avengers: Doomsday
dropped this week to much fanfare. For
me though, it didn’t have nearly the same impact on me as the teaser trailer
for Avengers: Infinity War back in the day.
While I do still love the MCU, it’s hard to deny it’s in a rough place
right now and it’s attempt to build hype with a mega fanservice cast could
backfire on it (especially with its commitment to it’s December release date
going toe to toe with Dune: Part 3 but that’s a chat for another time). Idk, it makes me think of Anime series that
had similar aspirations of greatness with a lot of anticipation heading into
their premieres, only to see them crash hard and either become so bad theyre
good or just plain bad. On todays Top 5
Wednesday, I’m looking at five such titles with the Top 5 Anime Series That
Failed to Live Up to the Hype
Following that nightmare fuel inducing cliffhanger back
in 1998, fans of Kentaro Miura’s epic dark fantasy had to wait almost two
decades for an Anime continuation, with many claiming that, despite the Eclipse,
no had seen anything yet.
Then came the
2016 series annnnnd…yikes.
I haven’t watched
much Berserk so I only know through second hand knowledge but even glimpsing
the horendeous animation, you could tell this isnt what anyone was looking forward
to.
It was so poorly received, even
though it got a couple of seasons, there has been no word of any further
Berserk adaptations (especially in the wake of Miura’s unfortunate death a
couple of years back).
#4-Aldnoah Zero
Few mecha Anime can leave an impact as great as Gundam,
Macross or Code Geass but Aldnoah Zero was willing to try.
And to be fair, the first season showed a lot
of promise with its premise and mecha designs.
It was when Season Two got going that things took a massive
downturn.
It was as if no one really had
a plan after that Season One cliffhanger and the writer were making it up as
they went, resulting in sudden character shifts and lapses in logic that send
Aldnoah Zero crashing and burning in spectacular fashion.
The next evolution of Mecha Anime, this was
not, and it wasn’t even the biggest Mecha travesty of the 2010’s (we’ll get
there).
#3-Dragon Ball GT
I think this one applies more to US fans.
Even while DBZ was still airing, we were all
clamoring over images and vague intel over what Dragon Ball GT would even be about,
especially seeing potential Super Saiyan Ozaru’s.
And then the show dropped right as Z was
ending and yikes, it was even worse than we feared.
GT took all the goodwill Z had built up and
foolishly flushed it down the toilet.
In
trying to make it a more classic Dragon Ball adventure in space, they took away
everything people loved about DBZ.
Even
when they tried to course correct and take things back in a more action heavy
direction, it was too little too late.
Were it not for Toriyama’s eventual return, the Dragon Ball franchise might’ve
died with GT (though Dragon Ball Z is always eternal).
#2-Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX
This one still kind of hurts.
The “Beginnings” preview movie showed so much
promise with the forces of Gundam and Evangelion working behind the scenes and
this title was coming hot off the heels of The Witch from Mercury, one of the
biggest impacts on the Gundam franchise in years.
Once you got passed Episode 3 and everything
they showed in “Beginnings” everything about GQuuuuuX fell apart.
From a cast that ranged from unlikeable to incredibly
underutilized to a story that felt like darts thrown at a board for plot points
to that beyond bonkers ending, Gundam GQuuuuuX felt like it had so much
ambition but had no idea what to do with it all.
So it tried to be Evangelion with Gundams and
while that could work in theory, it doesn’t work at all here.
#1-Darling in the Franxx
Oh man the hype around this one. A brand new mecha title featuring the
combined talents of Studio Trigger and A-1 Pictures? What could go wrong? Well where do you wanna start? Ugly looking mechs. The one of the worst casts of the new
century. Not wanting to save the world
because your crush wont return your affections?
Ichigo? It was like this show saw
Evangelion and thought it could do better without adding any of the
insightfulness and powerful emotions that still makes Eva a must watch
today. Instead we got a rare blemish on
Triggers resume and a massive dumpster fire that you either hate to love or
love to hate. Theme song still slaps though.
