T5W#509-Top 5 Ya Boy Kongming Musical Performances

The curtain has come down on Ya Boy Kongming’s time here at the Gundam Anime Corner but damn what a tour it was.  The ridiculously creative initial setup gave way to a series that showcased a love of the world of music on par with that of Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Carole and Tuesday).  As Eiko’s skill grew, so too did her musical performances and Kongmings sage advice helped guide her to the inspiring celeb she wanted to be.  And while Eiko’s music cant be disputed, Ya Boy Kongming had a ton of excellent musical numbers and today on Top 5 Wednesday, we’re taking a look at those moments as Kongming takes his final bow here (hopefully just for now).  These are my Top 5 Ya Boy Kongming Musical Performances

#5-The Intro
Alright this is a cheat but I don’t care, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” by Queendom is easily one of the best songs in the entire shows setlist and one of the best Anime Ops ever.  It’s a shame that there isnt an official full on dance routine for it though I have seen some people at cons fill in the gaps themselves and its pretty cool to witness.  This is a song you never skip whenever it comes on and one you listen to endlessly, it can never be played out.  If we get a Kongming sequel, Eiko and Kabe needs to come up with a routine for this at Summer Sonia.

#4-Eiko takes down Mia (Episode 2)
Eiko’s thrilled when a singer she likes, Mia, offers her a chance to perform at the same musical circuit.  However, this turns out to be an underhanded ploy as Mia wants to flaunt her superior fame over Eiko’s and kill her hopes and dreams early on.  Granted, Kongming has a sure fire stragetem to ensure a crowd but it’s Eiko’s high powered, techno filled rendition of “Be Crazy for Me” that seals the deal.  There’s so much energy to her performance and the beat is crazy good.  Sure Mia has an edge in sex appeal but when the music is this good, Eiko always wins even without flaunting it (also Eiko’s way hotter throughout the entire show, just sayin.)

#3-Acoustic Eiko (Episode 1)
“I’m Still Alive Today” could be considered Eiko’s signature song given how often we hear it throughout the show.  It doesn’t quite hit the same excessive use of say Lynn Minmei songs in Macross though.  But before it was a little played out, we got this beautiful acoustic guitar rendition in the first episode.  Maybe I’m a sucker for this kind of thing since my Dad played Guitar his entire life but still, this is just a sliver of Eiko’s true potential and her voice and those chords go so well together.  Also doesn’t hurt that the lighting in this scene makes her truly the cutest girl in the room.  Put all of this together and no wonder Kongming is so enamored with Eiko and wants her to reach new heights.

#2-The Battle of Shibuya 109 (Eiko’s Dreamer and Azalea’s Resurrection) (Episodes 11 & 12)
The entire finale was all about this long awaited musical mega event and it delivered and then some.  Eiko did exactly what she wanted to do with “Dreamer” and filled Nanami’s burdened heart with hope.  Hell I was moved to tears just listening to Dreamer myself.  I’ll be honest though, as amazing as Eiko’s performance was, I LOVED Azalea breaking out one of their original tracks for the crowd to show they had been reborn and we’re back to their old selves.  Both of these tracks slap hard and can move the heart as well as get the heads bopping.  Damn what a beautiful concert this was.

#1-Kongming vs. Kabe (Episode 6)
When people talk about Ya Boy Kongming, this is the bit they’re referring to the most.  A reincarnated tactician from the Three Kingdoms Period vs. a legendary free style rapper.  This is the Anime 8 Mile, this is the musical showdown to end all musical showdowns.  It’s ridiculous and kinda crazy but holy crap is it so much fun.  Kongming’s clearly a master wordsmith in his own right and has been studying the craft a lot since getting to Tokyo.  But whether he’s too good or not, his words still bring out Kabe’s true heart and get him to remember the legend he used to be and how being a Free Styler made him so happy.  All that’s missing is for Kabe to just go full 8 Mile and just sing “You better lose yourself in the music, the moment, you own it, you better never let it go (go).  You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow.  This opportunity comes once in a lifetime” Sorry I will never not think about that song during this scene.
