This year marks the 50th Anniversary of one of
the greatest comedies of ever made and one of my personal favorite films of all
time: Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
If you know it, you quote it. If
you quote it, you quote it with or without reason, it’s just that good of a
movie. While I was discussing this with
a friend, he brought randomly brought up how similar some of the characters
were to those of, of all things, Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans. Originally, this list was going to expand on
that notion with five comparisons.
However, the more I thought about it, the more everyone came back to one
particular chap clad in black and played by John Cleese. I’m of course talking about the “INVINCIBLE”
Black Knight. Sure enough, how many IBO
pilots can take the kind of limb splitting punishment they take and still keep
pushing forward to kick ass even if they cant?
Well I came up with five brave souls (and one total sissy) who fit the
bill. Been a while since I had a Top 5
Wednesday title this long, here are my picks for the Top 5 Gundam Iron Blooded
Orphans Characters akin to The Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy
Grail.
When you think Holy Grail’s Black Knight, you think of
how ridiculously overblown his legend is and how much he believes it. Sure he’s practically immortal but then again
there’s not much he can do when someones chopped off all of his limbs. Iok is the one character other than McGillis
who’s too high on his own supposed heroes journey. He thinks he’s the guy who can do anything
and is totally infallible. In short, he
thinks he’s invinicible. Too bad that invincibility
does jack squat when Akihiko crushes him in the series finale. You can practically hear Iok screaming, “THE
BLACK KNIGHT ALWAYS TRIUMPHS!!! IM INVINCIBLE!!!”
#4-Akihiro
Like so many of Tekkadan’s formidable pilots, Akihiro is
super strong and super fit and doesn’t go down easily in a fight. He might not be up to Mikazuki’s level but
Akihiro is still easily Tekkadan’s second best pilot. Add in he’s the pilot of
the mega powerful Gundam Guison, which has multiple limbs and Akihiro becomes
someone you already don’t want to pick a fight with but DEFINITLEY don’t want
to pick a fight with now. He’s also a
pretty honorable and loyal member of Tekkadan, someone more than worthy to
stand with the ranks of any King of the Round Table looking for Knights to join
his court.
#3-Galileo
Galileo is one of a couple of Gjallarhorn pilots who are
incredibly hard to kill throughout Iron Blooded Orphans and in both cases, it’s
a mix of stubbornness and an unquenchable thirst for revenge. Galileo has a more personal score to settle
as he finds himself on the receiving end of the manipulations of his bestie
McGillis. This results in a Darth
Vader/Black Knight mask and some of the most body boundary pushing tech
Gjallarhorn has to offer. If the Black Knight
can regenerate after losing limbs and humiliating defeats, then Galileo more
than fits the title himself.
Ein is the second of those aforementioned nearly
impossible to kill Gjallarhorn pilots and he manages to go even beyond Galileo’s
limits of how far he’ll go. In Ein’s case, he’s had a bone to pick with
Tekkadan since they killed his superior officer early on in the series. After this, he never wastes a chance to fight
them and keeps pushing himself physically and mentally to the point where his
body might give out but his mind refuses to stop. It actually results in some pretty nasty
effects to him later on and boy is it chilling.
He truly moves for no man, at least when they belong to Tekkadan.
#1-Mikazuki
I mean who else was it going to be. Sure everyone else on this list has been
mangled to near death by their Mobile Suit escapades but Mikazuki is still the
King of this Hill. Taking to battle like
a possessed, emotionless Terminator, Mika can tear through all with only the
bare hands of his Gundam Barbatos, and sometimes he even does just that. Even when he’s lost most control of his body
(unless he’s literally plugged into the Barbatos), Mikazuki can still bring the
menace and terror. Heck his Gundam even
keeps fighting when he’s out of action.
Suffice to say, no matter what fight his opponents think they might win,
all I can say is, “Alright…we’ll call it a draw.”
