After a long bit of silence, there’s been some substantial
movement on the Live Action Gundam Movie project. Well to be fair, nothing’s been confirmed yet
but articles have been popping up everywhere that the film is about to snag a
pretty big cast grab. Sydney Sweeney’s become
one of the most in demand actresses in the last few years. As gorgeous as she is talented, Sydney’s
wowed audiences through her breakout roles in HBO’s Euphoria and feature films
like Anyone but You (and tbh Madame Web robbed us of seeing her kick ass in a
sexy Spider Woman costume). The big question
is: who could she be playing in the movie?
If we don’t get a synopsis beforehand, it could settle just what
timeline the Gundam Movie will be set in.
But for now, todays Top 5 Wednesday looks at the Top 5 Roles Sydney
Sweeney Could Play in the Live Action Gundam Movie and it’s a pretty wide range
too as I’ve tried to keep it to one option per timeline. However, let’s start with a more likely
choice shall we?
Since G Gundam in 1994, the Gundam Franchise has been
creating fresh entry points for new fans more often than not. There’s no reason to believe The Movie wont
try the same approach, keeping newcomers from having to do a ton of homework on
the Universal Century. Sydney’s options
in this role are unlimited but I’d like to see her take centerstage as a Gundam
or Mobile Suit pilot like Christina Makenzie.
However, given her range as an actress, she could be a Captain like Murrue
Ramius, High Ranking antagonist like Haman Kahn, or important love interest
like Marina Ishmail. Could be a mix of
all of them too. Whichever fresh face
they introduce, Sydney will be more than capable of handling them.
Kudelia is the outspoken voice of independence for those
who live on Mars in IBO. Beginning the
series as a driven but naieve advocate, Kudelia evolves into a pretty tough
support system for Tekkadan, especially Mikazuki. Hers is a more politically driven storyline
compared to some other Gundam heroines and it would be fun to see Sydney tackle
that kind of character. It does mean she
might end up the damsel in distress early on but the fact that she grows above
that by the end of IBO makes her a character worth investing time and emotion
into.
#3-Lacus Clyne (Mobile Suit Gundam SEED)
I was originally going to put Archangel Captain Murrue
Ramius in this spot but a friend of mine inspired this alternate choice. Like Kudelia, Lacus is a powerful figurehead
for the Coordinators and a worldwide musical icon. I don’t think I’ve heard Sydney Sweeney sing
in anything before so there is some hesitation there. However, Lacus is more than she seems and
turns out to be an incredibly strong leader who advocates peace but isnt afraid
to lead those who trust her into battle for what she believes is right. Girls got tough skin under those good looks
and that’s the kind of role Sydney can play in her sleep.
#2-Relena Peacecraft (Mobile Suit Gundam Wing)
Honestly, if it’s not an original timeline or the
Universal Century, Gundam Wing would be the title to adapt into a Live Action
Movie since it’s still one of the most popular Gundam entries worldwide. To that effect, if you pick Sydney Sweeney to
be your leading lady, she’s gotta be Relena right? Granted they should probably write her better
than Bella from Twilight before Bella from Twilight existed. If you can overlook her obsession with Heero,
Sydney can dig deep into Relena’s never ending struggle to live up to her
families ideals while the world is at war all around her. Sydney could also bring a much needed
toughness to Heero’s biggest fan that’s up there with Lacus from Gundam Seed.
Many think that the Universal Century is the route the
movie project will eventually steer into.
With that in mind, there’s plenty of amazing female roles for Sydney
Sweeney to play but my top pick is Sayla Mass.
Sayla is right in the thick of the One Year War not just because she’s
serving on the White Base where the Gundam is stationed, but because she’s also
the secret sister of main mask sporting antagonist Char Aznable. It’s a complex role with a lot of emotions
from no nonsense warrior to sister desperate to save her brothers soul from
vengeance. Plus Sydney Sweeney’s voice
over the communications band issuing orders to Amuro and his fellow pilots,
that’s worth jumping into a Mobile Suit just to hear.
