Desperate to continue living the high life in the
Capital, Kazuma accepts a job tracking down an illusive thief. Only there’s a couple problems with that:
First, the thief is an old friend and Second, the job has to do with a special
request from Kazuma’s favorite Goddess, Eris.
With his options limited, Kazuma teams up with Chris to obtain a Divine
Treasure, even if it means he has to face off against his clumsy teammates in the
process.
Well we wanted a party in the Capital and damn Konosuba
delivered.
All of the craziness from the
countryside that comes with this show came to Iris’ little Kingdom and no one
was prepared for the results or the commotion it cause.
Some light thieving, some action, a ton of
hilarity, heck we even got a nice pause to set up another arc that will have my
favorite girl front and center.
Is KonoSuba
3 shaping up to be the new benchmark for the series?
Let’s jump back in and try to answer that.
Kazuma and Companies time in the Capital felt pretty jam
packed, seriously a lot happened and not just in the usual Kazuma somehow makes
things awkward and gross way (we’ll get to that though).
We got the return of (personally) my favorite
potential romance partner for Kazuma, the Goddess Eris.
Not only did she engage in an Evangelion
level long stretch of silence after Kazuma died (again and in the most
humiliating way possible), but she also hand delivered a new personal quest to
him.
It’s interesting Kazuma hasn’t run
into more people from Japan who’ve been reincarnated into this world like he
has.
But it makes sense that given the
option to take a special crafted item into their adventure, some of those
Treasures would potentially fall into the wrong hands.
It’s a nice bit of call back to the first
episode when Kazuma had a similar option…and chose Aqua just to spite her.
Still, how many others from Japan are around
and what kind of weird and dangerous stuff did they bring with them?
This revelation opens up a potential seasons worth of
adventures but it’s clear KonoSuba 3 has other plans.
We actually kind of forget about the Divine
Treasures plot pretty quickly after the return to Axel.
What we did get was some of KonoSuba’s best
comedy to date.
The Treasure in question
Kazuma had to steal (with the help of the always welcome cute thief Chris),
caused people to swap bodies for a limited period of time.
Of course, Kazuma managed to be creepy and
use his swap with Iris to get an up close look at Darkness (and subsequently
Claire) in the bath (dude come on even by your standards you’re pushing your
creepy levels to new heights and I’m not cool with that).
Still, I was definitely splitting with laughter
when Kazuma used his Iris form to put poor would be #1 hero Mitsurugi down
several pegs for petting her head.
Then, of course, you had the fun and fantastic
heist.
Not only is it always a treat to
see Chris in action but Kazuma went all in on his new thief persona.
Granted some of that definitely came from the
mask Vanir gave him but it made Kazuma way more confident (Top Condition as he
called it) and reminds viewers that when set to task, Kazuma is actually pretty
good at being a competent warrior and magic user.
Also Megumin has an instant crush on him
because of his outfit (and of course the girls cant recognize Kazuma because of
a mask and change of clothes naturally).
I will say I’m not cool with the final bits of the Capital Arc, mostly
in that Iris is aware Kazuma has her ring and hopes he’ll be her husband one
day.
The “Big Brother” bit was cringy
enough but that’s just a hard no there.
Hopefully Kazuma will come to his senses about one of the many other
(older and better) options around him because ugh, I hate that “Onii Chan”
trope in Anime, I just hate it.
Side
note: do wanna see more of Iris and Megumin together, their comedic chemistry,
and rivalry for Kazuma’s affections, was kind of cute.
We did get back to Axel and with it came a sudden mood
change, all revolving around Darkness.
Somethings got her worried and it’s something she’s keeping from Kazuma
and the others while masking it behind Quests and strength training.
It’s not that the humor was never far away
from any of Darkness’ scenes, trust me this is still a full on comedy first and
foremost.
I just have a bad feeling
about what my favorite character is about to get herself into in order to
protect her familys standing.
That said,
again, every Darkness scene is gold from her training with Megumin being
mistaken for naughty roleplay to the reveal that she likes modeling with
Megumin’s outfit (wow a lot of Darkness/Megumin ship fuel in this set), to her
always guaranteed gut splitting chats with Vanir.
Whatever trouble’s heading Darkness’ way,
this is one character who deserves to be protected at all costs, got it Kazuma?
Weirdly enough, we left the end of this set on a
cliffhanger that would be reserved for the last couple episodes of the
Season.
What could be bigger than taking
down a multi headed Kaiju sized Hydra?
We’ll find out Next Monday with the Season Finale of KonoSuba 3 right
here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
