Throughout my watch of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, one
particular stand out element is easily the music. It’s like listening to the OST of FLCL for
the first time all over again, providing a mix of soothing indie rock, exciting
8bit inspired action romps and just a bunch of tunes you can jam too on any occasion. It also helps that Anamanaguchi returns to
the franchise to compose much of the score like they did with the Scott Pilgrim
vs. The World Video Game. As you might’ve
guessed from the title of todays T5W, I’m gonna single out my favorite musical
bits from this kick ass OST…and then probably go listen to the full album again
on YouTube somewhere cause I’m still obsessed with it. These are my Top 5 Musical Numbers from Scott
Pilgrim Takes Off.
A Scott Pilgrim Musical?
Can that really work? It might more
so than you think. The sad thing is that
we never get to see much of Matthew Patel’s operatic powerhouse. What we do hear in a few seconds of the
Series Finale holds so much promise though.
From Matthew living his dream of singing as a leading man to Knives and
Stephen getting to hear their lyrics used in a Broadway musical, this little
sampler just leaves me wanting more. We
need a full length Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Musical AND it needs its own
OST.
#4-Konya wa Hurricane (Poppin Twinbee Cover)
While it’s not one of my all time favorite Anime, the
original Bubblegum Crisis from the late 80’s has a pretty awesome soundtrack,
courtesy of sexy leading lady Priss and her band, the Replicants. And it’s best song gets a surprise cover
appearance towards the end of the series.
Played in an offbeat digitized version by Poppin Twinbee (aka Old Scott
and the Katayanagi Twins), the cover of “Konya wa Hurricane" (There's a
Hurricane Tonight) just makes me smirk in amusement and not just because the music
video its played too is crazy fun too.
Cudos to Will Forte for doing a pretty good job with the Japanese lyrics
too, dude commits and it shows. Kind of
makes me wish there were more Anime theme covers like this in the show.
#3-Kim Kicks it Off
Anyone who’s a fan of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Movie had to have felt a chill of excitement run down their spine when Allison
Pill once again screamed, “WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB!!!! ONE TWO THREE FOUR!!!”. Not only does “I Feel Fine” invoke feelings
of the live action movies intro, its very much in line with the musical style
from said movie, so it’s like reuniting with an old friend again. However, the song gets even better in the
Series Finale when Knives joins Sex Bob-Omb.
Her added keyboard just makes an already great tune reach its true
potential. I feel fine indeed.
One of the best parts of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is giving
Knives a role that expands beyond her obsession with Scott. Making her a potential (and eventually official)
member of Sex Bob-Omb puts her more into the mix of things and it turns out she’s
a pretty good musician too. No scene show
this more than her little jam session with Kim.
Playing Scott’s base while Kim is on drums, this scene is pure freaking
magic and gets the heart pumping and the soul soaring. You’re truly witnessing something incredible
in the making…and damn Stephen for interrupting when I didn’t want it to stop.
Brie Larson blew everyone away with her sexy vocal
talents during Clash at Demonheads big number in Scott Pilgrim vs. The
World. Well turns out she was holding
back. When Envy shows up in a drop dead
sexy outfit during Scott’s Funeral, she not only steals all the attention but
she delivers an incredible power ballad cover of a song I never thought could
be turned into a dance floor bop. What
starts off similar to the original Sarah McLachlan version, “I Will Remember
You” quickly kicks it into high gear and doesn’t let up during the entire number. It’s been in my head since the first time I
heard it and it still lives there rent free, it’s the best song of the series
hands down.
