When you look through any catalogue of Gunpla, selections
from Mobile Fighter G Gundam are noticeably absent. It’s a Gundam series predicated on the fact
that every suit featured for the most part if a Gundam. And yet Gunpla from this series are very,
very hard to come by. For all of my love
of G Gundam, I guess it isnt nearly as popular as say Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED
or Gundam Unicorn, whose Gunpla all sell like crazy. So I was pretty excited to come across the
titular G Gundam of all things one day and nabbed it without hesitation. My goal isnt just to have a representative
from every Gundam entry but the MAIN model from each of them. And the God Gundam ticks off that box on the
checklist. So how is the build and does
it make me wanna seek out other Gunpla from this awesome series that lacks a
strong Gunpla presence?
During the 14th Gundam Fight in Future Century
60, Neo Japan had secretly constructed two Gundam Mobile Fighters. The first, the Shining Gundam, was deployed
with pilot Domon Kasshu and support crew member Rain Mikamura, to Earth for the
start of the tournament, with the God Gundam being held in reserve for the
tournament finals. However, Domon’s
initial first defeat of the Devil Gundam resulted in catastrophic damage to the
Shining Gundam, forcing Neo Japan to deploy the God Gundam sooner than
intended. The God Gundam’s capabilities
far surpassed it’s predecessor with additional firepower, beam sabers, and an
upgraded version of the Shining Gundam’s Shining Finger finishing move, the
Burning Finger, usable with both of the Gundams hands instead of one. Combined
with Domon’s increased strength through training, the God Gundam would go on to
win the 14th Gundam Fight after a fierce duel with former champion
and Domon’s mentor, Master Asia. The God
Gundam would then lead an alliance of Mobile Fighters from across the Earth
Sphere to defeat Urube Ishikawa and a resurrected Devil Gundam, bringing a new
age of peace for the Earth.
You know how important a particular part of a Gunpla is
going to be when it’s the very first thing you need to build. Typically you
start with the legs, torso or head.
Nope, for the G Gundam, they start you off with the Core Lander that can
insert itself into the Gundams back.
I’ve always liked the design of this Core Lander (and the others of the
Future Century cause they look heavily inspired by the Spinners from Blade
Runner, including the one of the God Gundam’s predecessor, the Shining Gundam)
and its fittingly extra with the six wide fins that can deploy when the God
Gundam is ready to unleash its ultimate powers.
Oh and unlike the Core Fighters I’ve worked on for other Gunpla like the
Full Burnen, the G Gundam’s Core Fighter comes with silver decals for window
effects rather than leaving it drab and blue (I think the action figure I have
of this has a green cockpit). Still,
when the Core Fighter turns out super well when finished, you know this build
is gonna be amazing.
And amazing it is.
The Gundams of G Gundam are some of the most unique in the franchise in
that they can fully mimic human movements.
Thus, they can move like Human Beings and not like slow, lumbering
behemoths. The extreme levels of
possibility are key to any of the Gundam Fighters and the God Gundam is no
exception. It’s funny because from a
Builder standpoint, the interior attachments and parts don’t look much
different from typical Gunpla. And yet
the God Gundam can be posed in so many cool ways. It also helps that is has a few hand
attachements so you can recreate some awesome Martial Arts poses. You can move the arms and legs around to your
hearts content and not have to worry about straining anything or risk any limbs
popping off. Honestly, I wonder if I can
do the same with any of my other Gunpla and I’m just not doing it right. And yes, it does come with a pair of orange
Burning Fingers and yes they look cool as heck.
Conclusion/Rating
The God Gundam HG Gunpla is right up there with the Alex and Kampfer as one of my favorite Gunpla Builds to date. While its parts and interior construction are fairly textbook, you cant tell that once the Gunpla is built and it is able to be posed and maneuvered better than most other Gunpla out there. No wonder Domon Kasshu won the Gundam Fight Tournament with this thing cause the God Gundam is equal parts a champion of Gunpla itself and the one I’m most proud of so far. Why aren’t there more G Gundam Gunpla out there? I think I might need another one stat.
9.5/10 Next Week we hop Universes over to the Cosmic Era for
another titular Mobile Suit…from one of my least favorite Gundam series of all
time but hey the mecha aren’t terrible, I’ll admit. Find out which model I tackle on an all new
Gunpla Builder Thursday right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
