Ive been going to conventions for years, both Anime and
general nerd culture themed. Obviously,
one of the best things to see there besides the guest stars, the Dealers Room
and a pretty cool convention center are the legions upon legions of
cosplayers. All show up to show off
their craft and sometimes it can be hard to choose which one is your favorite
from a 1-3 day experience. Well normally
I reserve Top 5 Cosplay lists for October, the month of Halloween though I know
that with some Cosplayers that might as well be a year long event. 2019 was a busy convention year for me and I
decided a while back that when I got to October, I’d spend the bulk of the month
dedicated to the Best Cosplays of 2019.
I’ll be going in chronological order beginning with Katsucon 2019 and
ending at my most recent, Baltimore City Comic Con 2019. So consider this a little Top 5 Wednesday
special Miniseries…that needs a proper title.
Oh and P.S. if I know the names of any of these cosplayers ill be sure
to include links to their social media pages so you can see more of their
fantastic work. But let’s kick things
off with my Top 5 Katsucon 2019 Cosplays and see what the cosplay capital of
the East Coast had to offer this year.
#5-King Arthur and Patsy
If it’s one thing I cant make more clear to anyone who
says otherwise: Anime Conventions doesn’t mean it’s exclusively about Anime,
especially when it comes to cosplay. If
there’s a character you love and want to bring them to life and bring them to
an Anime con, do so. I garuntee you’ll
be welcomed with open arms. Such is the
case with this classic, general nerd culture favorite: Arthur: King of the
Britains and his trusted servant, Patsy, from Monty Python and the Holy
Grail. Legit costume, proper prancing
etiqete and even a pair of coconut shells to simulate galloping just like in
the movie…id definitely join this King on their quest for the Holy Grail.
#4-Powerline
God, I remember when everyone was all about A Goofy
Movie. I absolutely remember the amazing
theme songs from the fictional superstar Powerline, ones I hadn’t listened to
in years. So imagine my surprise when my
cosplay friend, Roquois, suddenly appeared dressed as Powerline around the
Gazeebo on Saturday night. My jaw
dropped, how freaking awesome was it to see this icon resurrected in 2019 for
an Anime convention. Clearly Roquois
loves this one quite a bit as I saw her break it out for Otakon 2019 a few
months later. Never let this one die
anytime soon my friend.

#3-Red Suit Seiya
Rizuki is probably the biggest Sailor Moon fan I know and
she is absolutely in love with the Sailor Stars Saga (aka the final season of
Sailor Moon we never got an English Dub of until this year). I personally don’t know much about the Sailor
Starlites that were introduced in that final arc beyond the fact that they were
secretly disguised as men when not in their superheroine outfits. The one known as Seiya Kou aka Sailor Star
Fighter. Clearly, the character has a
penchant for suave Red suits to impress Sailor Moon herself, hence why I once
refered to this cosplay as a Sailor Moon/Lupin III crossover. But Rizuki’s love for the character and the
franchise is all over this amazing outfit and its no wonder her hard work makes
her such a great candidate to continually help host official Sailor Moon
photoshoots at conventions like Katsucon and Otakon.

#2-Sith Twi’lek
The second I heard GC Chan call my name to the side, I
had to do a double take. That really was
her underneath the amazing red make up and I was totally blown away. I remember meeting GC Chan Cosplay at my
first Katsucon helping to lead one of the best Sailor Moon Photoshoots id ever
attended. Her craft has come so far and
Sith Twi’lek is pure testament to that progress. GC looks like she belongs at the Star Wars
Galaxy’s Edge at Disney Land. This girl
has always been a superstar and that star gets brighter with each new year and
each new cosplay. Never stop shinning GC
Chan.

#1-Supergirl
Supergirl has always been one of my all time favorite
comic book characters and superheroines and its always nice to see her get
represented in the cosplay community. At
this particular Katsucon, I got to meet Life of Cosplay, who has made a name for
herself cosplaying many popular comic book characters with her biggest claim to
fame being Rogue from X-Men. She debuted
her latest cosplay: her take on the now iconic Melissa Benoist costume from the
Supergirl TV Series. Inspiring doesn’t
do the cosplay justice. It really did
feel like someone who had worked with Benoist on the set of the show as a stunt
double or stand in was walking among us with a true to form recreation of one
of the best Supergirl costumes ever.
Better yet, Life of Cosplay was every bit as kind as the character she cosplayed,
so much she even did a video shoutout for a friend of mine who’s a bigger
Supergirl Otaku than me. What can I say,
she made one helluva impact on this Katsucon.

See ya next week as I venture into new (yet familiar)
territory for more cosplay wonders as I present my Top 5 Awesomcon 2019
Cosplays.
