T5W#214-Top 5 Observations from the TGS 2019 Final Fantasy VII Remake Trailer

Last week at the Tokyo Game Show, we got a brand new trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake.  This wasn’t even a rehash of stuff we’ve seen before.  We got new reveals, new gameplay footage and just a bunch of new reasons to continue getting hyped over this project.  Had id known it dropped on a Wednesday, I might’ve swapped my Dark Crystal Top 5 for this week…but c’est la vie.  Now I can take a look at the new moments that definitely caught my attention (and made me more miffed I cant play this game cause I don’t have a PS4).  Here are my Top 5 Observations from the TGS 2019 Final Fantasy VII Remake Trailer

#5-Did Cloud just turn into a Frog?
Like something out of a Disney movie, a spell hits Cloud and the next thing you know…he’s hopping around as a teeny little frog.  Can he still do battle in this form and if so what can he do?  Or does this immobilize Cloud’s abilities and he just has to stay alive for a few seconds while hopping for his life?  Not sure if this was ever a thing back in the original game.  But it’s cute and I look forward to all the gameplay vids featuring this little treat (bonus points if Aerith coddles Cloud and calls him cute).

#4-More SOLDIER?
Now this is one thing im certain of wasn’t in the original game, at least not this early.  The first bits of the TGS trailer show Cloud, Jessie, Biggs and Wedge being chased down the highway by a guy that one of them identifies as SOLDIER.  In Final Fantasy VII, SOLDIER is the elite of the elite, some of the best fighters in the world.  Their ranks included Cloud Strife, Zach Fair and Sephiroth.  We’ve seen a few others in the Crisis Core prequel game but to my knowledge we didn’t really see much of them in the main VII game.  Are we getting new, never before seen SOLDIER foes to challenge Cloud and friends when this position was already pretty much filled by the Turks? (more on them momentarily).  Idk but hey more guys to fight is never a bad thing when your gameplay looks this good.

#3-Aerith, Aerith, Aerith
In the last trailer at E3, Tifa stole the show with an updated, sexier take on her original outfit.  The TGS Trailer is very Aerith heavy and WOW…that moment when she arrives in the dress she wears to Don Conholeo’s Mansion, mouths surely dropped to the floor faster than Cloud’s ever could.  I know Aerith has always been one of the most beloved beauties on all of Final Fantasy.  But, like Tifa, she looks far more beautiful than ever before.  She’s also trash talking the Turks and tearing it up on the battlefield.  I think the Tifa vs. Aerith debate will reach new heights when this game drops cause either gal could be perfect for you…and Cloud if he kind of remembered he was around a ton of beautiful women.

#2-What’s Up Turks
Largely absent from previous trailers, the biggest highlight of the TGS trailer was the appearance of the OG Men in Black: The Turks.  The ever loyal bodyguards of Shinra, these slick bad asses terrorized Cloud and company continuously, and even fought alongside them at certain points.  It is great to see fan favorites Reno and Rude and Turks head honcho Tsung, in all of the new HD glory.  Reno’s at the forefront of the action, his desire to kick Clouds ass hasn’t dissipated in the slightest.  No sign of one of the few prominent female members of the Turks, Elena, yet.  We did get a bonus glimpse of early game foe President Shinra via an Emperor Palpatine style hologram.  Cloud and company wont be short on bosses to smack around, that’s for sure.

#1-End Point?
The TGS Trailer ended on a very somber moment: Cloud, Aerith and Barret looking over the remains of Sector 7, crushed by Shinra’s overkill attempt to eliminate AVALANCHE.  At this time, we know full well we’re not getting an entire remake of Final Fantasy VII.  We’re only getting the opening hour or two in Midgard expanded into a 30+ hour campaign.  Looking at this tragic moment, one would wonder if this is where the first chapter of the Remake project is going to end.  Which would mean the first appearance of Red XIII and the escape from Midgard would be held off until the second game.  I personally think we will see both of those plot points and Red will be revealed in one final trailer before the end of the year or before the game is released in March.  If this were the potential end point man…we haven’t even gotten to the death Final Fantasy VII is most known for and this is a bummer note to end a glorious FFVII return on.
