Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Part 4 Episodes 16-20

Still stuck on Earth, Kamille finds himself fighting alongside One Year War legends Amuro Ray and Char Aznable.  In the midst of it all, Kamille meets Four Murasame, a beautiful girl who just so happens to be the pilot of a massive new Titans weapon: The Psycho Gundam.  While romance blooms between the two, time is running out to get Kamille and Char back into space.  In a race against time, will Four betray her duty to the Titans to save the man she loves?

The Earth Chronicles of Zeta Gundam continued today and romance was in the air for both Kamille and Amuro…both with about equal varied degrees of success and tragedy.  Granted, this is Gundam, it’s rare that a love story ever goes well for the main characters.  Hopefully the new, lighter side of Kamille we saw opened up through all of this will stick around for a bit.

With Char headed back to space with Katz Kobayashi in tow, it was time for Kamille to bond with the first Gundam pilot in history.  Kamille and Amuro together was as good as expected.  Amuro is a very different mentor from Char I think cause he’s still finding his feet in this fight.  Still, he’s being more accepting of Kamille’s developing Newtype abilities and mentoring him on that end as opposed to Char being the more military soldier side of Kamille’s Mobile Suit career.  If only Amuro had his own Gundam, God he and Kamille were unstoppable as is but then they’d be next level invincible.  Sadly, Amuro needing his own Gundam was the only thing I could agree on with his new would be love interest, Beltorchika.  At first she started out fine, getting Amuro to loosen up a bit.  But she became more and more obsessed with molding Amuro in her own image.  If I didn’t know better I’d say that Beltorchika was a Federation spy trying to undermine Kalaba and Amuro’s return to the fight.  That or she’s just super possessive and, like Jerid, she doesn’t know how to treat a human being like a person rather than an object.  In a series that’s done remarkably well with powerful female characters, Beltorchika was easily the weakest female character to date.

Fairing much better was Four Murasame.  Sporting blue hair, a tragic past (or lack thereof) and being placed in the pilots seat of a monstrous new Gundam, Four came in like an unexpected storm of action and emotion.  Her Psycho Gundam is the stuff of nightmares.  It’s half the size of a skyscraper and painted dark purple and almost single handidly destroyed the city of New Hong Kong, like something out of a Godzilla movie.  Four, however, wasn’t some sinister Jerid or other Titan at the helm.  If Kamille is supposed to be the next generation Amuro, then Four is clearly his Lalah Sune.  Granted, Amuro and Lalah’s short lived romance didn’t destroy a city.  But the pair complimented each other with a desperation to be heard, felt and understood.  Theyre more volatile but theyre still very much in love and all the romantic scenes between Kamille and Four were well done.  I applauded Kamille telling Four his full history in the heat of battle to try and get her to come to his side.  He might not have succeeded but Four still came through for him.  Still, at least she didn’t die by his hand if history was to fully repeat itself.  I wonder how Four’s impact on his life will affect Kamille now that he’s heading back to space.

Several of the New Hong Kong episodes saw the return of one of the last White Base crewmembers we still needed to check in with.  Oh Mirai, still the mother figure to everyone she meets.  Like Fraw and Hayato getting payoff with their marriage, we learned a while back that Mirai and Bright got married after the One Year War.  And let me tell ya, their kids are some of the most adorable tykes in Gundam, odd to see Hathaway and he’s not his uber annoying Char’s Counterattack self.  Mirai and the kids were at the forefront of a couple of episodes, including one where the Federation took them hostage to get Kamille and his allies to surrender.  I’m surprised Amuro told anyone about Lalah but it was good to hear Mirai bring her up when Amuro could advise Kamille on how to handle Four.  But it looks like Mirai will be staying on Earth which makes sense.  Like Fraw, Mirai has kids to think of.  It’s just a little sad we wont see her and Bright sharing screentime together since their growing bond was one of the best things to enjoy about the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.  Also, Amuro called Mirai and Bright the closest thing he has to family in passing…so hell yes Kalaba and AEUG sponsors, he’s gonna do whatever it takes to save her and her kids, consequences be damned.

It also looks like Amuro’s time on Zeta Gundam is at an end too, hopefully just for now.  Kamille’s back in space and wow, it feels like we haven’t seen Bright and Emma in forever.  No sign of Char but I guess we’ll catch back up with him tomorrow.  I also get the feeling it’s time for Kamille to get a long overdue titular Mobile Suit he might’ve had some ideas for.  A lot of excitement so far and I cant wait to see what’s next for Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.  See ya tomorrow for more right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
