T5W#279-Top 5 Times the Earth Federation were the Bad Guys (or just complete idiots) in Gundam

During the One Year War in Mobile Suit Gundam, the Principality of Zeon is the villainous side that needs to be stopped.  And for good reason too: they dropped a colony onto Earth and are led by a fascist regime in the Zabi Family.  No Ifs Ands or Buts about it, Zeon shouldnt win the One Year War.  However, as Gundam is so fond of doing, there are heroes on both sides of the war and villains and the Earth Federation is no different.  Just because heroes like Amuro Ray and Bright Noa fight on their behalf doesn’t mean the EF is a bunch of full on saints.  Across different Gundam realities, they can be even worse villains than the ones theyre supposed to be fighting.  So on today’s Top 5 Wednesday, I’m taking a look at the Top 5 Times the Earth Federation were clearly the Bad Guys in Gundam.  To be clear, I’m not just looking at the Universal Century timeline.  Any era where the Earth Federation (or Alliance) was a major power in a conflict is fair game.

#5-Not Even Putting Up a Fight (Mobile Suit Victory Gundam)

I’m placing this at the bottom of the list because, in truth, Victory Gundam is one of the last Gundam shows I still need to watch at all.  So some of this is supposition based on what I’ve heard.  By the time we get to the far future of UC 0153 (the farthest we’ve officially gone in the Universal Century, ignoring G Saviour), the Earth Federation is little more than a governing force with very little power or influence to speak of.  Hence, then the Zanscare Empire decides to start a holy war across the planet…the EF barely put up a defense, if any.  Yep, most of the series they just sit on their asses while the League Militaire and the youngest Gundam pilot on record, Uso Evin, handle any kind of warfare.  I think by now it’s well past time for the Earth Federation to call it quits and hand the peacekeeping reigns to the next generation.

#4-Making Back Room Deals with Char (Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack)

God, the Earth Federation is at its most stupid with this one.  After Char Aznable drops an asteroid onto the planet at the beginning of the Second Neo Zeon War, the EF immedietley send a delegation to meet with Char in secret.  Their hope is that by selling the old Zeon Asteroid Axis to Char that he’ll just call off the war, no hard feelings and all.  Char knows this and throws in all the charm to convince them this is very much the case.  Oh man, the EF doesn’t realize that not only is Char planning to decimate their fleet in a decoy attack but they also gave him exactly what he needed to complete his ultimate plan: an even bigger asteroid with nuclear engines that will decimate Earth and make it uninhabitable…You magnificent bastards I READ YOUR BOOK!!!!

#3-Refusing to help Civilians during the destruction of Nora (Mobile Suit Gundam AGE)

During the opening Battle of Nora, the Earth Federation of the Advanced Generation Era establishes itself pretty quickly as villains who might be just as bad as the Unknown Enemies plaguing their forces.  When the UE strike at Nora, the higher ups of the EF are quick to attempt sneaking out in their most advanced battleship, the Diva, rather than stay and help defend the colony.  Had it not been for the actions of rogue Captain Grodek, they might’ve gotten their way and Nora would be just another lost cause.  This sets the tone of the AG EF nicely as there is a laundry list of terrible and idiotic things that can be laid at their feet.

#2-Everything the Earth Alliance Does in Gundam Seed (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed)

Wow, I cant believe that throughout a great deal of the Cosmic Era, I actually found myself siding with ZAFT rather than the Earth Alliance.  Granted this is later in Gundam Seed Destiny when theyre clearly the victims but still, the guys fighting from space are usually the official bad guys.  And ZAFT is that in Seed…but the Earth Alliance is arguably worse.  To get directly to the point: the bulk of the EA’s ruling party is run by racists: the illuminati that is Blue Cosmos to be more precise and that alone is an immediate DO NOT ROOT FOR THESE GUYS reason.  These asshats discriminate against all things Coordinator, whether theyre part of ZAFT or not.  They constantly make life hell for the Archangel (especially Coordinator Gundam pilot Kira Yamato) and even sacrifice hundreds of their own soldiers lives to deal a crippling blow to ZAFTs invasion forces with a nuclear bomb.  It’s not wonder Captain Murrue Ramius and her crew go AWOL and ditch these bastards after that atrocity.  It’s actually a miracle the Archangel had any good people to begin with because outside of Murrue, Mu and the bulk of the crew…everyone else in the Earth Alliance is a racist asshat…so no, the Earth Alliance are not the good guys in either Gundam Seed series.

#1-The Titans (Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam)

The crème of the crop.  The Titans were the perfect way to turn the Universal Century on its head in the first official sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam.  These guys give Zeon an immediate run for its money with their list of war crimes.  From their brutish, arrogant behavior to their neglect for human life, the Titans extend their reach to secretly control all of the Earth Federation from the comfort of their own untouchable status.  Oh and they have no qualms about gassing entire colonies to quell even the slightest inkling of rebellion.  No wonder good hearted ex Federation members AND former Zeons joined forces to take the Titans on.  Only the most evil of douchebags would bring Amuro Ray and Char Aznable together to fight on the same side.
