T5W#267-Top 5 PS5 Trailers from the Playstation 5 Event

Last week, Sony held a special event to reveal the launch date and pricing of the upcoming Playstation 5.  Not taking into account the preorder debacle it’s still facing, the Playstation 5 looks to be one of the best things to happen to gaming in a long time.  This is no doubt thanks to the fact that it has a decent slew of launch titles ready to go and some highly anticipated titles coming in 2021 and beyond.  As luck would have it, we got new looks at many of these upcoming titles and some were pretty surprising.  It’s an easy Top 5 list to put together (and my third video game centered Top 5 in 3 weeks.  Do I go for a fourth next week or try to find something Anime related to talk about?), the Top 5 PS5 Trailers from the Playstation 5 Event.  Let’s get to it.

#5-Devil May Cry V: Special Edition

Anytime a “Special Edition” of Devil May Cry is released, that means one thing and that one thing is highlighted more than anything in the new trailer: You get to play as Vergil.  It’s been a welcome tradition since it began in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening.  Being able to play as Dante’s Kantana wielding bad ass equal is like experiencing Devil May Cry in a whole other awesome way.  I’m kind of wondering if, like Devil May Cry 4 before it, we’ll even get to play as Trish and Lady as well, bringing to total amount of playable characters in the game to a historic 6.  So many years later and Devil May Cry’s still got it.

#4-Resident Evil Village

I’ve got a lot to say about this one…might be worth it’s own Top 5 in the future (maybe October for Halloween?).  Resident Evil saw a return to its survival horror roots in Resident Evil VII: Biohazzard but it felt a bit more Silent Hill-ish than Resident Evil.  Well the first person, supernatural horror approach continues in Village (which doesn’t have an “8” in the title despite the Roman Numerals being pointed out) and it looks like we’ll be seeing a return to a more Resident Evil 4 inspired locale.  Oh and you’ll be battling Werewolves and…maybe Chris Redfield?  Yeah, thisll get a Top 5 of varied thoughts later in the year.

#3-Spider Man: Miles Morales

Thanks to his appearance in Spider Man: Into the Spiderverse, Miles Morales has become better known to general masses as a welcome inheritor of his own Spider Man mantle.  His good fortune has even netted him a game spinning out of (no pun intended) the 2018 PS4 Spider Man game.  Looks like all the TLC that went into Peter Parkers successful foray into the next generation will carry into Miles, who’s still coming into his own Spider powers while balancing hero and personal life and battling some teched out villains.  But Miles has some unique abilities of his own and they’ll go perfectly with the already perfect web controls of its predecessor.  This game might be all the reason needed to buy a PS5 at launch.

#2-God of War: Ragnarok

It was only a minute long but this announcement trailer was more than enough to get me hyped.  We all knew a sequel to the 2018 God of War reboot was inevitable and let’s face it, we’re all down for more time with the Ghost of Sparta.  The trailer promises Ragnarok is coming and that means something cataclysmic is about to go down and Kratos and his son, Atreus (or BOY!!!) are caught in the middle of it.  I’m sure we’ll see more steady development for Kratos and Atreus as they learn to be a family…but yeah, there’s a whole swath of Norse mythology waiting to get the every loving bejesus beaten out of it and God of War will always deliver on that end.

#1-Final Fantasy XVI

This one caught me by surprise the most.  It’s not that I didn’t think another Final Fantasy was coming, it’s that I never knew how far along this was in development or what it was about.  Well the PS5 event showcased the very first trailer for the next chapter in the franchise whose name gets more and more ironic with each new entry.  What’s even more surprising is that theyre really going all in on the “Fantasy” aspect.  This’ll be the first main Final Fantasy game (that’s not an MMO) where there looks to be ZERO scifi or steampunk elements.  This could be as back to basics as you can get for a Final Fantasy game and maybe that’s long overdue.  We have been seen a more futuristic scifi/fantasy clashing since Final Fantasy VII.  The trailer itself looks pretty promising with out of control summons and all the epic swords, sorcery and Chocobo action you’ve come to expect from Final Fantasy at this point.  I doubt we’ll be getting this in 2021, probably 2022 by the earliest (cause Final Fantasy loves to take its time on these).  But for old school Final Fantasy veterans, this return to form might be what they’ve been waiting for.
