Gundam Anime Corner-Fall 2020 Updates

Hey guys.  Well we’re in the last legs of a rather quick summer.  Worlds still a bit of a mess but I’m surviving and I know everyones doing the best to do the same as well.  As for the blog, well having a bunch of time off from work has set a lot of things in motion for the rest of the year and even well into 2021.  You saw some of this when I decided to binge review all of Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny back in May.  So…look forward to another extreme project like that down the line.  In the meantime, let’s walkdown what’s coming from September through December, shall we?

September
After an extremely disappointing second season, to say the least, Psycho Pass took a bit of a break from TV airwaves.  We did get the much better Psycho Pass: The Movie and a trio of anthology films: Sinners of the System, to show that the franchise wasn’t out of juice just yet.  The culmination of this was the launch of a third season last year in Japan.  Thankfully, I got a chance to check out Psycho Pass 3 late that year and opted to pencil in the 8 episode review for September (each episode is 45mins each).  New cases, new crew, and with luck, more of that good old Season One vibe instead of the Season Two vibe.

October

Every October since 2016 I’ve tried to get in a supernatural or horror themed Anime for the Halloween season.  I’ve been wanting to get my hands on Basilisk and review it for a long time and now it’s time has come.  Just imagine Romeo and Juliet if the Montagues and Capulets were both legendary warring Ninja Clans led by their respective doomed lovers and you get the picture.  After that, for the actual day of Halloween itself, we’re sticking with the Samurai Swords and Sorcery motif with a personal favorite movie of mine, the infamous Studio Madhouse masterpiece, Ninja Scroll.

November

So guess what I learned after the end of Psycho Pass 3…it got a movie follow up and it just so happened to air here on Amazon Prime same day as it was released in Japan (and split into 3 episodes for whatever reason…weird since Netflix did the same with the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress movie, The Battle of Unato).  Psycho Pass 3: First Inspector kicks off a packed November, packed because I’m reviewing back to back short titles.  The first up is a little known entry in the long line up of titles for Leiji Matsumoto’s legendary Space Pirate Captain Harlock. The six episode Harlock Saga sees the man himself pursuing thieves who have taken a gold capable of controlling the universe and man did they pick a fight with the wrong guy.  After that, we’re gonna check out the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Macross saga with Super Dimension Fortress Macross II-Lovers Again.  Is it just as good as the series that spawned it or is there a reason this title is lost in the sea of Macross Plus and Frontier?

December
Usually when First Impression Friday wraps a season around November, I’ve ended up doing a special FIF feature in December called GundamCember.  Here, I just review the first couple of episodes of Gundam series I haven’t covered yet on the blog.  Well, I’m out of those and barely scrapped together a GundamCember 3 last year.  Still, I like the idea of ending every year on a Gundam related note.  So while we’re not getting a GundamCember 4, we are still getting GundamCember…just wont be First Impression Friday related so it’s not a Part 4 (why am I making this complicated?).  Point is, originally, you were going to be getting one Gundam series for the holiday…now you’re getting two, back to back.  Yep, we’re kick December off with Mobile Suit Gundam AGE and it’s follow up OVA, Memory of Eden, followed by a true lost gem of the Gundam Franchise, one that many say doesn’t get enough credit or attention.  It’s the successor to Gundam Wing in Japan: After War Gundam X.  And who knows, maybe this will pave the way for some Gundam sized announcements and plans for 2021, you’ll have to wait and see.

Til then, enjoy Psycho Pass 3 and I’ll see ya around right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
