It’s hard to believe that im one week away from
celebrating a milestone for my blog.
Next week will mark the third year ive been doing my weekly Top 5
Wednesday feature. Over 150 lists of
random factoids, thoughts on recent announcements or just general…whatever
really lol. Next to my main reviews,
this is my most consistent and enduring feature on the Gundam Anime
Corner. Some have been very deep, others
have been for laughs and some are unapologetic filler cause I couldn’t think of
anything better one week or two…or more (but not in a row). So, while I have something special planned
for the third year mark, I decided to do something ive actually wanted to do
for a while now. This week im looking
back at 150+ lists and choosing my Top 5 of those lists. Yep, it’s my Top 5 Top 5 Wednesdays on the
Gundam Anime Corner.
#5-#8 My Sister’s
Top 5 Anime Squee Moments
The earliest entry on this list. As I said above, there have been many times
where it’s been tough to come up with lists from my head alone. So for once I decided to turn to my loveable
little sister for a topic and got this rarified look into her Anime
fandom. Some of these were kind of
obvious but others were a little surprising, or at least in how she ranked
them. I’ll always be happy that I can
share my love of Anime with my sister cause it’s definitely brought us
together, especially when she can recommend a title for me I end up enjoying
quite a bit like Psycho Pass or Kill La Kill.
Love you Bonta Kun, we need to do another list like this sometime.
#4-#108 Top 5 Ways
the Japanese Death Note Films Are Superior to the Netflix Film & #123 Top 5
Reasons I Think the Live Action Battle Angel Alita is a Bad Idea
I’m calling a tie for these two because, much like my
sisters list, I had help on both of these.
For Death Note, I knew I had to redeem myself for the rather fair review
the movie probably didn’t deserve in the first place. So I reached out to the people with the best
complaints about Death Note 2017, my Otakon Jersey crew of Maria, Lauren,
Johnnie and Laurence. All of their
thoughts went into this list and it was helluva lot of fun to chat back and
forth with them about why the Japanese Death Note movies easily stand superior
to the Netflix train wreck. As for the
Alita list, that one I turned to another dear Otakon friend, Vivian. When the first trailer for Alita: Battle
Angel dropped, she was the first to voice disapproval, right before I did. I knew I wanted to do a list of first
reactions and I wanted her input, which I got and loved. Doing group projects like a Top 5 List is
something I should probably do more often because it helps keep me close with
the people I call family through the medium that brought us all together in the
first place.

Reasons I Love Anime
The night this Top 5 was written was a dismal one for a
number of reasons. But when dark times
emerge and the world becomes uncertain, you want to find a way to brighten
everyones lives for even a little bit.
And I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than to tell people a
bit about the world of Anime that I spend wayyyyy too much time in but feel all
the better for it. Everyone’s reasons
for liking Anime are different, that’s an obvious truth. Maybe its because you love your Waifu or its
because the action is grander and more explosive than any Michael Bay
movie. Maybe it’s because you found a
title that can still move you to tears every time in both good (Your Name) and
not so good ways (The End of Evangelion).
Whatever your reasons are, im glad you have them and I was more than
happy to tell you my 5 Reasons for Loving Anime too.

Spoiler Thoughts on The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Wow, I would never have thought id have so much to say
about a Haruhi Suzumiya movie. It was
while I was writing the review for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya that I
realized that so much I wanted to discuss would have made the review like 10
pages long but also would’ve spoiled a whole lot. So I made an executive decision and as soon
as the review was over, I immediately penned my Top 5 Spoiler Thoughts
list. Much of it stemmed from
observations id held onto since during the TV Series and I think it brought the
whole Haruhi Suzumiya experience full circle.
I had a lot to say about Yuki Nagato’s role in the film, Kyon’s final
decision, even the shocking revelation that as maddening as The Endless Eight
was, we were going to get some actual payoff from it and it was glorious. I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie finds
its way onto my end of the year Best of 2018 Top 5 List…it was just that damn
good.
#1-#132 Top 10
Katsucon 2018 Moments
Of all the conventions ive been to, nothing could ever
prepare me for the game changing good time of Katsucon 2018. For the first time in a really long time, I
felt like I was experiencing a sequel that soared above it’s predecessors. 2015 was an amazing intro to the
convention. 2016 was fun but kind of a
letdown. 2017 was a good recovery from
2016…but 2018 was a whole new level of special.
I discovered new things about Japanese culture like Naginata, I found
new things to enjoy about spots I constantly visit hundreds of times over the
course of four days, I got that freaking huge GUNDAM WING BLU RAY ULTIMATE BOX
SET. But really, it came down to the
people. Being able to share Katsucon
2018 with many of my Otakon friends was one of the most special feelings I have
ever felt in my life. And I got to add
more members to my convention family, meeting cosplayers id only just begun to
connect to on social media. And man, I
got to talk to my hero, Steve Blum, for one brief moment. No way could I ever sum up that weekend in 5
thoughts alone. So yes it’s a cheat…but
my Top 10 Katsucon 2018 Moments is still my #1 Top 5 Wednesday list of all
time…for the moment, who knows what the future holds. Who knows…who…nose.
