The Tokyo Settlement erupts in violence again. With numerous nations on their side, the
Black Knights are poised to turn the tables against Britannia and reclaim their
homeland. Meanwhile, Lelouch meets with
Suzaku to plead for his help in protecting Nunally in the chaos. But war is seldom fair and promises might not
be able to be kept. A flash of light
envelopes the Tokyo Settlement and Lelouch’s life changes forever. How will Zero exist now if the one person he
has fought so hard for no longer exists?
Last year when I reviewed Gundam 00, I was petty critical
of the character, Anew Returner. It was
clear from the moment she first appeared that she was an Innovator and at any
moment she could stab Celestial Being in the back…and I hated that no one
picked up on the hints of her true identity.
Why bring this up a year later?
Well when Anew was killed in battle, her death was pretty heartfelt, if
only because of Lockon’s reaction. It
was one of the best scenes in Gundam 00 watching Lockon wail on Setsuna, who
was forced to kill Anew to save Lockon’s life.
It was a good death and it made me care.
Now Rolo sacrificing himself to save Lelouch from being shot down by the
Black Knights…nope, not a hint of remorse in me for that.
As happy as I am that Rolo is out of the picture, I cant
help but wonder why the writers even attempted to make us care about him in his
final moments. His character arc is a
mess. He killed Shirley and probably
would’ve killed Nunally too if he had the chance (more on that in a bit). There was nothing ever likeable or redeemable
about Rolo. So an attempt to make anyone
feel for him at the end just feels…well Ive felt more for less developed
characters than I did for him. Rolo was
the biggest waste of energy in this season and I’m glad he’s done. At least Lelouch wont have to worry about him
screwing things up anymore…cause he’s got a lot more to worry about now.
The second Black Rebellion, I feel, lacked the intensity
and brutality of the Season One finale.
Probably cause most of it took place in the air and the damage seemed
kept to a minimum. There wasn’t enough
punch or cause for concern…that is until the final moments. After being a good man and ignoring Nina’s
pleas to fire her new super weapon, Suzaku’s “LIVE” command kicked in. Now here’s my thing. We knew what the Flea warhead was. Even if we never saw the live test, we saw
the light from it. We know how
destructive it probably was…SO WHY DIDN’T NINA?! Her freak out that she caused the death of so
many people is groan worthy. Yes it’s
horrible but in her mind, she just wanted to kill Zero. Her stupidity just cost the lives of
millions…and I don’t feel sorry for her one bit.
I do feel sorry for Lelouch, who may (or probably may
not, Im not totally convinced) have lost Nunally. It was the beginning of the end for his
little regime. Within minutes of that,
Schneizel and Cornelia revealed his secret identity and his powers to the Black
Knights. Now Lelouch is on the run,
sisterless, army-less and probably the most wanted man in the world right now. The bit about Rolo’s sacrifice aside, this
finally felt like Code Geass getting itself together. It’s shedding a lot of what’s held it back
and is returning to a stronger, more shocking storyline like the first season
had. Losing Nunally sent Lelouch into a
shock he couldn’t hide and now that his troops have betrayed him, he’s on his
own. All that hard work over the course
of the series has come collapsing around him.
Plus he’s lost the one person he wanted to do all of this for:
Nunally.
We’ve only got two parts left but with the rest of the
season behind it and Lelouch on a new path: I think Code Geass has a shot of
making it to a bold finish. The only
question is: what the hell is hell is he gonna do now?
Stay with me, we’re almost done.
