Bamboo Blade Part 6-Episodes 18-20

Muroe High may have lost it’s latest match, but there’s still room for growth and we’ve seen some interesting developments.  Tama’s fury may have cost her a fight and Kojiro and Ishibashi are not about to let that go.  Miya encounters a powerful new rival from America, named Carrie, who’s not just out to beat her in Kendo but steal Donnie away as well.  Meanwhile Tama and Yuji head out to a show together featuring Tama’s Anime hero, Blade Braver.  Little does Tama know, she’s about to meet someone there who will impact her destiny more than she realizes.

Ive never hesitated in showing my respect and admiration for Tama.  She’s easily one of the most likeable and entertaining leads ive ever seen in an Anime.  But after this week, I’m really curious to see how she’ll take losing a challenge.  We got a nice glimpse of it here when Kojiro wisely pulled her from the Kendo Match with Koishi.  Then we got a good follow up with her quick, “I’ll never lose” reply to Ishibashi.  Now when it comes to bold statements like that, a character can fall one of two ways: The Goku route, in which they just get back to training to become stronger; or the Domon Kasshu route, in which a character balls like a baby for like 5 episodes until they get their stuff together.  Seeing as how we’re close to the end of this series, the latter doesn’t seem likely.  Still, I cant help but think that Tama losing a match just once will be a crushing blow for her.

That being said, while it was nice to get some fallout from that bit of Tama fury from last week, a lot of this weeks episodes felt like filler to me.  Now it was better filler, some good introductions and even a shining moment for Donnie.  I’m not sure what to think of the new girl, Carrie.  As far as most characters go, Miya has had some of the worst luck when it comes to supporting characters.  But whereas Rami’s stalker subplot isn’t really going anywhere, Carrie’s appearance might yield some things.  Still, I think there’s a little bit of lost in translation in the English Dub with her.  Carrie is an American who’s lived in Japan most of her life but reverts back to American slang when she gets excited.  The “I speak Jive” moments kind of seem out of place in an all out American Dub to be honest.  Though, we did get a fun moment for Donnie where he stood up to Carrie for Miya and spoke her language…that was great.

Lastly, Tama got to enjoy a day out with (not her boyfriend) Yuji and witness a stage play with her favorite Anime idol, Blade Braver.  This was fun for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, I can relate.  Tama suddenly bursting into factoid mode about the history of Blade Braver and Cosmo 13 is a rare thing for people to see.  I’m just like that at conventions with the right people.  Tama acting a bit out of her kendo element always produces cute results.  And then there’s Rin (no relation to my Fate/Stay Night girl).  I think we’ve finally got a good rival for Tama.  She’s her age, likes Anime and is a fan of Blade Bravers nemesis, Shinaider (huh, huh, get it?).  Having her staying with Tama for a bit, along with the Blade Braver stage group, should make for some interesting chats.  Chances are Rin’s good at Kendo too…I smell epic finale showdown.

The beginning of the end is nigh for Muroe.  Catch the two part finale next Monday and Wednesday here on the Anime Corner.
