While I’ve always fancied myself more of a Mortal Kombat
fan compared to Street Fighter (just rewatched the 2021 movie and I cannot wait
for MKII in a couple of weeks), I’ve been rewatching the first teaser trailer
for the upcoming Street Fighter movie with a lot of enjoyment. Everything that was shown during the Game
Awards Reveal late last year looks dialed up to 11 and I think that whether
this movie is good or bad, it’s gonna be fun as hell. So what’s got me making this one of my most
rewatched trailers of the last few weeks?
Well our slew of Video Game themed (or I guess in this case Video Game
Movie Themed) Top 5 Wednesday’s continues as I break down my Top 5 Thoughts on
the Street Fighter (2026) Teaser Trailer.
While it’s not perfect and definitely not as iconic as
the 1995 film, Mortal Kombat 2021 delivers a lot on what fans of the games
really want to see in terms of action and overly violent content. It’s Mortal Kombat after all, give the people
what they want. Street Fighter seems to
be taking the same advice as it’s eternal battle cousin and adhering more
closely to what makes Street Fighter, Street Fighter. Colorful locations, rapid fire action,
characters allowed to look like their video game counterparts, and just a zany
sense of fun that comes from a world where these kinds of 24/7 fighters inhabit. This doesn’t just look like a film
replicating what it thinks makes Street Fighter cool. This looks like a movie made by people who
have a deep love for this series and wanna see it done right for better or
worse. And hey, I’m here for it.
So I rewatched Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
over the weekend and was quickly reminded of how recent Capcom adaptations show
a lot of love for the decade in which their flagship titles were launched. And yes I know Street Fighter did kick off in
1987 but let’s face it, no one thinks of that when they hear “Street Fighter”. They usually go right to 1991’s Street
Fighter II. Just like Welcome to Racoon
City, the new Street Fighter trailer wears it’s 90s nostalgia on its sleeve
with MTV, Tupac and even a certain song Ken and Ryu are singing that also
appeared in the recent RE movie, “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes. That last one gets a pretty epic mix for the
trailer btw, it sounds more awesome than ever.
It wouldn’t be a Street Fighter movie without either of
the franchises top Queens: Chun Li and Cammy. Of the two legendary beauties, Chun Li seems
to have a more centralized role as we see her gathering fighters for the
forthcoming tournament hosted by M Bison, including Ryu and Ken. Cammy’s got some hot moments herself,
including a pretty flirty mention of how she thinks Chun Li’s infamous thighs
are overrated. Judging from the moves
Callina Liang is pulling off, Cammy’s gonna be eating those words (along with
Vega and Rayna Vallandingham’s Juli).
Also, again, nice to see the movies are finally willing to let everyone
wear their signature looks, including these lovely ladies.
I think Cody Rhodes Guile says it best in the trailer, “I’m
positive that a fireball came out of Ryu.”
While signature physical techniques like Chun Li’s rapid fire kicks,
Guile’s Flash Kick and Ken’s Shoryuken are faithfully recreated, we do get to
see more of the mystical energy attacks other characters posses. Of course we get Ryu’s iconic Hadouken and it
looks like Akuma is set to fire off his own as well, we also get a quick
glimpse of Dahlsim’s elastic limbs flinging Ken around and a tease of M. Bison’s
eyes looking like he might be ready to Psycho Crush someone…or is really excited
to see Chun Li (who wouldn’t be). It’s a
definite edge the new adaptation has over the 1994 original movie, which is
cheesy and fun but lacks the supernatural elements Street Fighters cast of
warriors are also known for.
While he has been seen on his character poster, the
trailer shows Blanka for the first time on screen in his full CG form played by
Jason Momoa and…yeah, I’ve gotta admit, this is the one part of the trailer
that has me worried. I get it. Blanka is one of those characters who is
tricky to pull of practically with his physical description and fighting
style. But his wobbly limbs give off pretty
goofy and not in a good way. Considering
part of Jason Momoa’s pretty busy 2026 includes him being the bad ass intergalactic
bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl this summer, don’t see why they couldn’t just
paint him green, old school Incredible Hulk style…then again they tried that in
the 94 movie and that didn’t go over so well.
Idk maybe I need to see more of him to be convinced he can work (Momoa’s
a solid choice for the character though, that I wont dispute).
