Mamma Mia, is it any shock to anyone that The Super Mario
Galaxy Movie did gang busters this weekend at the box office? It shouldn’t be. Even if I and others didn’t think it was as
good as the first, Mario Galaxy is still a Mario movie and that alone is enough
to put butts in seats for a fun 90 minute romp.
One thing that the Mario Movie sequel emphasized more than it’s
predecessor (believe it or not) was it’s cameos and Easter Eggs. Nintendo clearly has plans for opening up
it’s plethora of iconic gaming characters to enter their newly minted cinematic
universe and I’m not gonna lie, some need those projects more than others. So on today’s Top 5 Wednesday, I’m
speculating about the Top 5 Potential Sequels/Spin Offs Setup in The Super
Mario Galaxy Movie. Aside from our first
entry, I’ll keep Spoilers to the bare minimum if I can, but still you should
probs check the movie out anyway before checking out my ideas here.
$190 million domestically. $375 million worldwide on a $100 million
budget? Oh yeah, Mario 3 is happening
without a doubt. But what’s next for the
super high jumping plumbers and their friends?
Well one thing for sure if that Luigi might finally be getting his own
love interest with Princess Daisy, who makes a very Amy Rose non speaking cameo
at the end of Mario Galaxy. As for villains, with Bowser and son locked up by
Fox McCloud, surely a potential bizzaro pair of Mario Bros could step in to
fill their void until they inevitably break out. Mario and Luigi vs. Wario and Waluigi on the
big screen. Let’s make it happen Nintendo
The Yoshi’s Island inspired segment of Mario Galaxy was
one of the movies better sequences. A
lot of that comes from the inherent adorableness of Baby Mario and Luigi. You can tell these two definitely got up to
some trouble as toddlers that probably helped mold them into the super jumping
athletes they are today. So maybe this
doesn’t require a possible full on movie spin off but I could def see some
Illumination shorts featuring the Baby Mario Bros plus Yoshi playing put upon
babysitter for the mischievous duo. Also
give us the Baby Mario cry when he gets separated from Yoshi, it’s annoying
sure but it’s iconic as heck.
Despite having a sizeable supporting role in the first
film, Seth Rogen’s DK only has a brief cameo appearance in Mario Galaxy. Still, I’m pretty sure a Donkey Kong spin off
has been in the works since the original Mario movie cemented him as a star in
his own right. We do see DK causing a
bit of trouble on a construction site much like his intro days back in the
80s. But we also got to spend a lot of
time with the Kongs and we know Kranky, Diddy and Dixie are all around so why
not give us a nice little jungle adventure in the same vein as that legendary
SNES trilogy?
#2-Super Smash Bros
Honestly, with Mario, Donkey Kong and Fox running around
in the same universe, it wouldn’t shock me if Mario 3 ended up being a full on
Nintendo crossover event. Heck,
Nintendo’s next big movie project is a Live Action adaptation of The Legend of
Zelda, so when are Zelda and Link popping in?
Seeing how well Mario gelled with Fox and how he and Kong overcame their
differences to become a solid team, it feels like Nintendo might be thinking to
try an Avengers style team up movie at some point after a few more films have
been released. Kirby? Samus?
Pikachu? Does Sonic dare step
into the fray? The possibilities are as
endless as the roster.
#1-Star Fox
I was confused and a bit worried when they made a last
minute reveal that Fox McCloud would appear in the Super Mario Galaxy
Movie. And let me tell you: the last
thing I expected was to be saying “OK WHEN IS THIS MOVIE HAPPENING!!!?” like a
minute after he appeared. Glenn Powell
brings the charm, smugness and coolness he brought to Hangman in Top Gun:
Maverick to Nintendo’s legendary space ace and like DK in the first film, he
steals the spotlight whenever he’s on screen.
From his quick but entertaining backstory to his sick AF Arwing
maneuvers to Brian Tyler’s fist pumping versions of the classic Star Fox
themes, this has to have shot up the priority list for Nintendo’s movie
plans. Star Fox as a whole is long overdue
for a win and a big screen outing could be the mission they’ve been waiting to
fly.
