We’ve just wrapped up the Third Season of the original 90’s
Sailor Moon series and man have Usagi and the girls come a long way from their
humble beginnings. From everyday cute
school girls to inspiring superheroines, these girls have braved world ending
odds multiple times against the worst of the worst and the most diabolical of
mad men and women. Since this is the first
true and proper watch for me, it’s been a pleasure watching the girls grow and
mature in their roles as defenders of the planet. Recently I’ve wondered, even though there are
still two season left to go, just how strong is each of the Inner Senshi at
this point? I gave it some thought and
think I’ve got answers to that, even if some might be more obvious than
others. I should also say that while
this is a ranking list at the end of the day, it’s by no means a reflection on
the characters of each Senshi, theyre all amazing and bad ass in their own
right. It’s just in this case some are a
bit more powerful than others but still, each of their talents is vital to the
success of each battle. With that out of
the way, consider this a mid series report card for the core five magical girls
as I present the Top 5 Strongest Inner Senshi (as of Sailor Moon S).
Ami is the analytical strategist of the group and as
such, much of her skill set is predominantly set on defense. Thanks to her gadgets and mist layering
capabilities, Ami can assess the strengths and weaknesses of various monsters
and come up with a decent strategy with how to deal with them. As Ami has grown to believe more in herself
as a person, her powers have begun to evolve as well, with Super S showing Ami
being able to use a more offensive attack, Shine Aqua Illusion, which can
actually damage enemies was well as immobilizing. They might not be the most powerful attacks,
but theyre hardly what makes Ami one of the most important assets to the team.
#4-Sailor Moon
Ok, ok, ok, hear me out.
Usagi is definitely powerful.
Hell it’s because of her various special attacks that the team is able
to finish off every Monster of the Week.
But if you stop and think about it, Usagi can pull off one hit kills
sure…but that’s well after every Monster has been worn down and weakened by
everyone else. For all of Usagi’s growth
as a character and a heroine, she’s still dancing and running around the
battlefield like her skirt is on fire trying to keep the Monsters from capturing
her. It’s everyone else who is wittling
down the Monsters hit points before Usagi can get in the killing blow. One hit kills are nice but Usagi needs to diversify
her skillset a bit more as the show goes on.
While she may not be my favorite of the main five, Minako
does have one thing going for her that any mecha fan can appreciate: the power
of Beam Spamming. Most of Venus’s
attacks are beam based, meaning she can just stand there and launch a barrage
of energy strikes at one enemy or multiple at a time. Her Venus Love Me Chain can also serve as
both a defensive ensnarement tool or an offensive hard hitting weapon as
well. Seeing as how she is the longest
acting Senshi of the original five, Minako’s powers do pack a bit more punch
too. It’s amazing she cant finish off
more Monsters on her own, but that’ll be a running theme with our last two picks
too.
#2-Sailor Mars
My girl Rei is one of the first examples of a Senshi
using powers outside of those granted to her as Sailor Mars. As an expert Shinto Priestess and Exorcist,
Rei is very adept at expelling evil spirts and using her paper talismans to
immobilize and reveal Monsters hiding within human hosts. On top of that, she can also utilize these
talents when she’s Sailor Mars and some even become the basis of her fire based
arsenal of magical attacks. And that’s
all before getting to those fire moves that can deal serious damage against
most foes like her Burning Mandala or Fire Soul attacks. Also, I’m still a sucker for Sailor Mars and
Rei just looks so good when she’s putting the smack down on baddies with her
fire.
The very first episode Makoto debuted in saw her taking
on a Monster soley by herself and without her powers. In that instant, I knew Mako was gonna be a favorite
because she was the first of the girls to show that even if she wasn’t a cute
superheroine in a short skirt, she was still a bad ass superheroine in her own
right. Mako’s towering form and
formidable strength give her an added edge most of the other girls don’t have
and one could argue she’s only stronger when she’s Sailor Jupiter. Sure the lightning moves are scary but so’s
Mako’s ability to lift anything over her head and hurdle it into a wall. Plus, I’m pretty sure Mako is one of the rare
few to finish off a Monster by herself without the need for one of Usagi’s finishing
moves, that alone deserves mad respect.
