Well that was a shift in gears now wasn’t it? Little Witch Academia returned to start the second half of its run with a decidedly more serious and definitely darker turn as a new character arrived on the scene, bringing with her the first real feeling of menace I didn’t think this should would attempt. Then again, this is Trigger after all. You couldn’t expect them to not give the heroine some big bad they’ll have to take on before the end of the show.
The arrival of Croix Meridies cast a pretty dark cloud over Luna Nova. I mean I’m all for merging magic and technology together and her “technomagic” (as ill call it), sounds great in theory as a way to make better use of magic without forcing it to be so vastly divided between Witches and their Fairy staff and other surrounding businesses. The only problem: Croix is so clearly the deceitful villain before she even comes clean with it to Chariot. She’s got a major advantage over the Luna Nova staff and everyone eating out of the palm of her hand given the steady decline of magic overall. Of course, the biggest victim in all of this is Akko. Her Shiny Chariot obsession could very well be her ultimate downfall if she’s willing to seek Chariot intel from anyone who claims they knew her. There’s definitely going to be a war for Akko’s heart between Croix and Chariot and Chariot proved she was ready to throw down…when she did throw down fighting her way to Akko and revealing she’s got a sexy Black Widow style costume underneath her school robes just incase of emergency. I guess the question is: how long until Croix reveals Chariots identity to Akko when Chariot has been unable to do so for months? Point is, Croix is on the scene and there’s nothing but trouble for Luna Nova ahead. Makes me think the fun, feel good vibe I enjoy about the show so much is going to take a hit.
Thankfully, there was still fun and crazy adventure to be had amidst these newest core plot developments. The Fairy Strike was amusing and gave us some insight to the relationship between the two species who inhabit Luna Nova (the Witches and Fairies) and it was hilarious to see Akko so easily swayed to their cause and dawning a bandana in defiance. I wish we could have spent a little more time with Lotte’s family. Their character designs were kind of adorable, especially Lotte’s Mom. Still, the quest to save Lotte, Sucy and Lotte’s family from a deadly disease did mean we got to see Akko track down various items from all over the place, including a custom piece from a hard working but ridiculed Yeti.
Probably one of my favorite offerings from this set was Akko and Amanda infiltrating Andrew’s school to track down The Holy Grail. While it wasn’t Monty Python hilarious, though there was a Black Knight, it’s always a treat to see Akko and Andrew interacting and see how much friendlier they become with each new encounter. I was a little confused over Amanda’s sudden desire to quit Luna Nova, even though Akko claims Amanda makes that boast often. It kind of came out of nowhere and didn’t go anywhere really in the long run. What we did get out of this venture was an excellent sword duel between Amanda and Andrew’s classmate Louis. In the end, Amanda got to slay a Black Knight and Andrew and Louis managed to keep the peace while Akko and Amanda got away. I think the next generations got things well in hand…it’s their elders and their dedication to politics and traditions that have me worried.
So, Luna Nova has a would be evil genius hiding in their midst and about 85% of the school is already in love with her. Magic continues to fail and Akko’s so Charity crazy she’ll side with Empress Palpatine without even realizing it. Guess that means Obi Wan Chariot needs to reveal some bombshells before its too late. Who thought this should would get so serious all of a sudden? See you next week for more Little Witch Academia right here at the Gundam Anime Corner.
