Kill La Kill is a show that I think is pretty easy to get into and a lot of fun to enjoy. While the lack of proper explanation to certain world building aspects can be aggrivating, the show makes up for it with an abundance of manic energy filled fight scenes and great comedic timing. The second outing for the show was just as strong as the first, although I found myself being a bit more critical of a couple of core characters for various reasons.
If it wasn’t evident before, this episode set should make it clear that Kill La Kill sometimes takes a bit too much time to pummel the living heck out of its lead heroine. Yes, Ryuko is one of the toughest chicks in Anime and she can take a beating. But more often than not, the fights she gets thrown into are so one sided it’s kind of concerning that she’s made to be a punching bag. Of her three biggest fights of the week, only one I could slide on because Ryuko wasn’t trying to fight Mako. But her fights against Tsumugu and Sanageyama were kind of scary at times. Both characters are super “tri hards”, dedicated to their schtick even if one is being way too serious and the other is kind of a poser. Tsumugu’s most notable quality besides always having “two things you need to know” always on hand is his use of sewing machines as heavy artillery, it’s pretty neat. But I was super concerned he might’ve been the one to end Ryuko and Senketsu. He’s definitely the most super serious character on this show to date…and that’s saying something.
I think I’m enough episodes in to have a decent opinion on characters I adore and characters who annoy me. Sanageyama is one of the latter. He’s just a tough guy with a chip on his shoulder and feels like he has more to prove to Satsuki than anyone else. Sanageyama’s just trying to hard to be a bad ass and it doesn’t really make him that entertaining. I might say he isn’t my least fav of the Elite Four. That honor goes to Jakuzure, who’s main contribution to the show has been continuously bragging about how well she knows Satsuki since she’s been with her the longest. Jokes on her, I doubt anyone really knows Satsuki Kiriyuin. On the other hand, I freaking love Ira Gamagoori, the towering member of the Elite Four and the Head of the Disciplinary Committee. He’s just the right amount of over the top and crazy that fits perfectly with Kill La Kill. He’s also a pretty honorable dude, willing to help Ryuko and Mako get home after their scooter breaks down because outside of school they aren’t at war. Say what you will about his “personal fetish” fueiling his Goku uniforms power, Gamagoori is one of my favorite characters in Kill La Kill right now, maybe even second after Mako.
Mako continued to prove why she’s Kill La Kill’s MVP with a strong story that found Mako and her family falling into wealth and high status after she and Ryuko founded a fight club (with Ryuko as the sole member). It was so sad to see the Mankanshou family succumb to power and temptation of riches and leave their fun, happy go lucky way of living behind, and with it Ryuko in the process. It was still funny to see Mako acting like a sexy business woman and see her in a comically awesome Goku Uniform. But Ryuko fought hard to get her best friend and her new family back and it was one of the best moments of the series, from probably one of the best episodes so far. You’ll never know how much you missed good old Mako until she breaks into one of her “alleluia rants”. Sucks she had to lose the uniform. It just looked cool, was there anyway Satsuki couldntve just removed its power or something? Speaking of, Satsuki looked secretly pleased Mako rejected her philosophy that humans are soulless pigs who are greedy beyond all reason.
While I love the heck out of Mako, the other major friendship that continues to shine in this show is the one you’d only find in an Anime like this: the bond between a girl and her school uniform. Senketsu definitely stole the show in the duel with Tsumugu when he literally threw himself at the assassin and warned him not to hurt Ryuko. In a world where something as crazy as talking clothing exists, it’s strangely heartwarming to see this deep bond form between Ryuko and Senketsu. Is it because he’s the last connection to Ryuko’s father? Or should I not look too deep into this and just accept that these two are friends because, at the end of the day, it’s a natural thing? I like to think the latter and something tells me this core friendship will play a big role later on in the series. Also, if Senketsu has sentience, what about Satsuki’s Junketsu? Has she been conversing with it and we just haven’t seen it yet?
This week ended with a pretty big leap in the plot and set up Ryuko for her inevitable duel with Satsuki’s Elite Four: Gamagoori, Sanageyama, Jakuzure and Inumuta. We’re only eight episodes in and it feels like we’re skipping to events usually saved for the Episode 17-20 range, aka just before the end. And you just know somehow Ryuko’s gonna pull through and blaze her way to a rematch with Satsuki. Whatever happens, I cant wait to see Ryuko take on these four giants next week. I think we’re in for some of the best action yet.
