#5-Cyberman
Next to The Daleks and The Master, the Cybermen are some
of Doctor Who’s most infamous bad guys.
Emotionless and nigh unstoppable cyber monsters, these guys have
tormented the Doctor ever since the birth of Doctor Who in 1963. Continuing the trend of seeing Doctor Who
monsters suddenly pop up at Anime Cons, it was a nice surprise seeing this
recreation of one of the most recent model Cybermen pop up. Pretty sure he had a voice modulator with him
too to make him sound more like a proper Cybermen, excellent.
#4-Jedi Master 11th Doctor
I always love a good universal crossover look. Be it Punk Rock Sailor Senshi or Jedi Knight Disney
Princesses, if you can mix it and mix it well, you’re gonna be remembered. Since 2014 was right after Doctor Who’s 50th
Anniversary, it’s fever was starting to die down in the cosplay scene around
Otakon. But a few Doctors were still
around, including one daring to rock a Fez and Sonic Screwdriver instead of a Lightsaber
(wish he’d had a mop to complete the look but hey it’s all good.). The Force was indeed strong with this
Doctor.
#3-Sakura and SayoranX2
It’s sad to think but I feel like the number of Cardcaptor
Sakura cosplays is diminishing year after year.
It’s a shame because the Anime does feature Sakura Kinomoto in a wide
variety of Magical Girl costumes. Sadly,
Sakura might not be in the cultural zeitgeist anymore. So I kind of make it a mission to a good friend
of mine to always be on the look out for them.
Sure enough, spotted a pretty amazing looking Sakura being escorted by a
pair of legit looking Sayoran’s, now that’s just perfect.
#2-Optimus Prime (Generation One)
Nowadays, the Michael Bay Transformers Optimus Prime
seems to get all the attention because…well imho stupid (the movies are garbage
and a disgrace to everything related to the Transformers). People still remember the classic Generation
One series fondly, including this cosplayer who showed off a near perfect
cosplay of the legendary Autobot leader, complete with his own Matrix of Leadership
(I was gonna say Prime never held it so heroically in the movie but he did
later on in the TV Series). Seeing this
image of hope reminded me that even in down years, “When all hell’s breaking
loose, you’ll be right in the eye of the storm”. This Optimus Prime had The Touch and The
Power.
#1-The Official Senshi
2014 was a big year for Sailor Moon. It not only heralded the debut of Sailor Moon
Crystal in Japan, Viz Media also announced they had acquired the original
series itself, plus the movies, and were planning on releasing them all with a
new dub, including the never officially released in the US Sailor Stars (aka
the final season). To promote this, Viz
pushed Sailor Moon big time and that included recruiting cosplayers to act as
their “Official Senshi” (as I termed it), to host photoshoots and special promo
games throughout the con. The core five
Senshi they selected for Otakon 2014 were all incredible, looking both the parts
and being incredibly kind and energetic as well. All in all, Otakon 2014 mightve been a bummer
overall but it was a great one for any fan of Sailor Moon.
