2020 is gearing up to be one of the biggest years in
video gaming ever. From remakes to long
awaited sequels to new IPs ready to change the industry forever, every month
should be Christmas for a great many gamers (myself included). Naturally, since I closely associate gaming
and Anime together, Video Games have always had a small presence on my
blog. So think week I’m looking at my
Top 5 Most Anticipated Video Games of 2020.
Most of these have been confirmed but there might be a couple that don’t
have definite release dates…but it’s still likely and you’ll see which one in
particular I’m talking about riiiiiight…now
#5-Overwatch 2 (Undetermined)
So yeah, this was announced late last year and even
featured some cinematics and gameplay footage.
While Overwatch is still doing well on the current console generation, I
can imagine OW2 is being geared up for next gen so maaaaaybe we’ll see it in
the fall? Either way, OW2 is bringing a
slew of new game modes and mechanics to the already established formula. But the biggest thing to get excited about is
playable Story Missions that have been sorely lacking. Finally, we can expand of whispers and
comics, novelizations and gorgeous mini movies that only gave us a sliver of
detail into the history of this amazing world of heroes and villains.
#4-Cyberpunk 2077 (April 2020)
I’ll be honest, id been a bit on the fence about this
one. A very futuristic looking Grand
Theft Auto where you get to live out your inner Ghost in the Shell
fantasy? Sounds a little too good to be
true. But then came last years bit E3
reveal where we learned that Keanu “Johnny Neo Wick Mnemonic” Reeves would be a
major player in the world itself. Oh and
Keanu himself was there to personally make the announcement that would go down
in history as one of the best E3 reveals of all time. With the endorsement of the man himself, I’ll
be paying a bit more attention to this one come spring.
#3-Resident Evil 3 (March 2020)
I’m currently playing the Resident Evil 2 remake and I am
freaking LOVING IT!!! I never played any
of the original Resident Evil games prior to 4 but the remake of 2 is arguably
scarier than ever with more realistic visuals for the gore and zombies. With 2’s massive success I was wondering if 3
was going to gt the same treatment…cue a couple of weeks back when an HD Jill
Valentine dove into an alley to escape an explosion. Yep, the cutest member of S.T.A.R.S and 3’s
titular terminator, The Nemesis, are back and if their game works anything as
well as 2 does then this is a sure fire hit for 2020.
#2-Halo Infinite (Fall 2020)
I love Halo, it’s probably my favorite video game
franchise of all time. I will say that
it’s kind of fallen a bit out of favor recently. Halo 4 had a great campaign but the weakest
multiplayer of the entire series. Halo 5
Guardians was the exact opposite: the best multiplayer since Halo Reach but a
pretty divisive campaign. Halo Infinite is a chance to start fresh and rectify
some of the problems of Halo 4 & 5.
Plus, much like the game that started it all, Halo Infinite will be the
first entry since Halo: Combat Evolved to launch an new Xbox System in the
fall…that alone is pretty damn exciting.
#1-Final Fantasy VII Remake (March 2020)
The pressure…is on like never before. Not only have we been waiting over a decade
to play this game but each new preview has gotten better and better. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith (Goddamn Aerith),
Sephiroth, Barrett, everyone looks beyond amazing. And even though it’s only set to cover the
opening chapter of the game, Remake looks to be well worth the full game price
tag with more to do in Midgar than ever before.
Sure, there’s reason to worry about when we’ll see future installments
of this new series. But if this opening
salvo can knock it out of the park…it could be one of the biggest wins for the
Final Fantasy franchise…now if only they’d bring the game to Xbox One so I
could play it too wahhhhhh.
Speaking of, to celebrate this new release, I’ll be doing
a special Final Fantasy Franchise Retrospective (right now called Final
Fantasy Friday), throughout all of March as well as doing a special review
of the long forgotten first Final Fantasy Anime, Legend of the Crystals,
the same day that VII Remake comes out in stores…good time to be a Final
Fantasy fan for sure.
