Carole is a piano playing orphan falling in and out of
part time jobs. Tuesday is a rich girl
seeking freedom who also happens to play guitar. In the middle of one of the busiest cities on
Mars, these two wayward souls will meet and discover that theyre capable of
making some amazing music together. In
an age where digital media threatens to remove all the heart and soul out of
making music, Carole and Tuesday are determined to make it big. They may be starting out as nobodies. But the day is coming when the whole of the
red planet is going to know their name.
This is only the beginning of a music fueled road to success for the duo
of Carole and Tuesday.
On a random Saturday, a friend of mine texted me, telling
me I needed to check out a random title called Carole and Tuesday. I was confused until I saw it was on Netflix
and learned a little bit more in the process: mostly that this is the latest
directorial offering from one Shinichiro Watanabe. He’s no big deal really…he just gave us
Cowboy Bebop (and the Movie) and Samurai Champloo, aka two of the biggest
titles accepted in both the East and West as more than just Anime. That alone is incentive to check it out and
hope it’s better than his previous scifi outing, Space Dandy. Man, let me tell you, Carole and Tuesday’s
got potential and you’ll realize that by the end of the first episode.
It’s interesting that Mars is the setting for this
series. On the one hand I
understand. Much of Cowboy Bebop was set
on Mars and Alba City, where Carole and Tuesday reside, is the setting of the
final battle in the Bebop Movie. A lot
of me wondered if this was truly necessary.
Much like Bebop, sure there’s a lot of high tech about, but the city and
the people still feel like modern day guys and girls just going about their
day. The more I got into the episode
though, the more I kind of understand that this move is more than just about
making this work stand out from many other musical themed Anime. The introduction of music producer Tao gives
me a pretty good idea of where this series is heading. Tao is a man who feels less human and more
artificial. He hates humans and makes a
living making music by fusing every single genre in history together to make
new tracks. I can already see some sort
of big competition where his digital style goes head to head to with Carole and
Tuesday’s more human touch approach to good tunes.
And what of the titular duo? Like Spike and Jet or Mugen and Jin before
them, Carole and Tuesday hit it off immediately (ok Mugen and Jin might not be
the best example cause theyre rivals in Samurai Champloo but they play well off
one another). Carole’s street smart
sassiness mixed with Tuesday’s shy but determined personality are a good
blend. I also like their love for the
classics, not just the current day Top 40 playlists. Judging from the episode titles, Watanabe is
pulling from what I hope is a near perfect playlist of artists and songs like
Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” or Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” The moment you hear Carole and Tuesday play
together for the first time, singing in great harmony, you feel
something…something unexpected. It makes
you pay attention to the show in a way youd never imagine going into a show
like this. Of course, there’s plenty of
comedic mishaps too, with Carole being unable to hold down a job or Tuesday
being unaccustomed to a non pampered lifestyle.
In short, this show is going to work based on these two and their music
alone.
It looks like Watanabe has another bonefied hit on his
hands. Considering the mark left on the
Anime world by Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, the bar is eternally high for
any work the man churns out. But a pair
of endearing and adorkable leads and a love for music both modern and (ahem)
classical, puts Carole and Tuesday in a good starting position to be something
truly big. I cant wait to see more…I
want to see more. Yeah, I’ll def be
keeping an eye on this one. Actually,
you know what, I’ll just make an additional announcement…Carole and Tuesday is
coming to the Gundam Anime Corner March 2020 as the big countdown to the blog’s
sixth birthday. Get hyped everyone.
