The Return of the King is nigh. Three years after his historic Oscar win,
Godzilla is on his way back to the big screen with the highly anticipated
sequel to Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla Minus Zero. And yesterday, the very first teaser dropped
at Cinemacon. It was less than a minute
but there’s a lot to chew on as to what is waiting for us in the next chapter
of Writer/Director Takashi Yamazaki’s new take of the King of the
Monsters. So let’s not waste anymore
time and roar our way into todays Top 5 Wednesday as we check out my Top 5
Thoughts on the Teaser Trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero.
In a short trailer full of surprising moments, we kick
things off with a confirmed time skip…and it’s not as big as many including
myself were thinking. The film takes
place two years after the events of Minus Zero in 1949. Not much is known about how things are going
but we get an aerial shot of what’s left of Ginza after Godzilla’s rampage. No reconstruction’s been started probably because
of the high levels of radiation left in Godzilla’s wake. So the scars of Japan’s first encounter with
the King of the Monsters are still as fresh as their big defeat in WWII just
prior.
#4-Koichi and Noriko Return
We don’t see many characters in the teaser but two familiar
faces will be returning for the sequel: Koichi and Noriko. In Minus Zero, these two war weary souls
found their way to each other and began a life together, even raising an
adorable orphan daughter named Akiko.
Looks like Koichi is still flying the friendly skies while Noriko has not
succumbed to whatever radiation sickness that was teased at the end of Minus
Zero. She is wearing an eye patch though
so she has been affected in some way. Koichi and Noriko only barely survived
Godzilla’s first appearance. Can they
survive another?
#3-“We can finally get to use it”
The teaser trailer has English Dialogue (not sure if it’s
dubbed or not) hinting that Godzilla might not be the only problem in Minus
Zero. “If the operation fails, maybe we’ll
finally be able to use it.” Let’s unpack
this. Just because Godzilla was defeated
doesn’t mean Japan didn’t stop anticipating something like him popping up down
the line. Is there an organization that’s
been working on a new Kaiju countermeasure.
It took everything Japan had left in its military and scientific arsenal
to take the big guy down the first time.
What else do they have to work with in the last couple of years?
#2-A New Threat?
Whatever that aforementioned unknown group has in store,
it might have something to do with that mess we see Koichi flying through. Looks like some kind of anti gravity force is
flinging rubble into the sky. Could this
be that secret weapon? Is it another Kaiju? Have Godzilla’s powers evolved once
again? One thing is certain, Japan’s
gonna be in serious trouble considering the state its currently in. I guess to take some pressure off of them,
they aren’t the only ones caught in Godzilla’s crosshairs.
Probably the most striking image from the whole teaser
trailer is the final shot of Godzilla marching into view right behind Lady
Liberty herself. Yep, looks like
Godzilla has turned his attention towards the US and now the guys who sat out
the first fight with him are going to feel his fury. Now Godzilla wrecking havoc stateside is
nothing new considering we have Legendary’s Monsterverse films. But this Godzilla raising a ruckus in the Big
Apple is more than just an exciting teaser, it’s a chance to once again show
Godzilla ’98 how Godzilla is done, done, done…ok I’ll show myself out for that
Kpop Demon Hunters reference. Cant wait
for November 6, 2026.
