T5W#543-Top 5 Characters Done Dirty in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX

Of the many, many things Gundams latest entry does wrong, the characters suffer the most.  Honestly, if you’re not Machu, Nyaan, Suji or Chalia Bull, you’re window dressing, a name just meant to bolster a typical hugely cast Gundam series…and that’s just wrong.  Just because everyone’s not getting into the same poor man’s “fooly cooly”/cryptic nonsense doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to just stand around and be ignored or dumped on.  So, for our first Top 5 Wednesday of 2026, I’m giving some justice to some underrated new faces to the Gundam franchise with the Top 5 Characters Done Dirty in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX.

#5-Haro
While he’s not in every Universal Century story, Haro is a major staple of the time period and across the Gundam Multiverse as well (he’s Sunrise’s mascot for crying out loud).  GQuuuuuX continues the UC tradition of having a Haro around, this time grey colored and with a cute cap.  Sadly, this Haro doesn’t just go woefully underappreciated, it gets a ton of abuse.  From getting stepped on or slapped around by Machu or Nyaan when they’re freaking out in the GQuuuuuX to getting vacuum sealed by Zeon after it’s captured alongside Machu, Haro’s deserve better treatment.  I know the Gundam 00 Haro wouldn’t put up with this crap.

#4-Xavier
Xavier has a lot of potential as a character but constantly finds himself either someones punching bag or completely upstaged by other characters (Rocketeer Chalia Bull anyone).  He’s a very competent pilot and a key player in the brewing Zabi civil war and could be the best person to act as a guide/confidante even possible love interest for Nyaan once she came over to the Zeon side.  Instead Xavier’s skills are downplayed in favor of far more wildly overpowered pilots who don’t even register he exists most of the time.  Heck, I think there’s maybe only one character in the whole series who genuinely cares about Xavier’s well being and we’ll be getting to them soon.

#3-Nyaan
Ok, ok, I know I was ragging on her a bit earlier but hear me out.  Between Nyaan and Machu, Nyaan is the closest to a traditional Gundam protagonist.  She’s the lone survivor of a colony masaccare, a gifted but very dangerous Mobile Suit pilot and she’s the pawn in a war of adults.  Nyaan’s got so much potential to be a true series lead.  She could start out as a Zeon test pilot who gets coerced into helping Kycilia, meeting Xavier and soon becoming so powerful both sides of the Zabi family see her as a key asset to be used.  It’d be more compelling than Machu and her constant scowl if you don’t agree with her wanting to go swim in the Earth’s oceans.

#2-Gihren Zabi
One of the original big bads of Gundam, Gihren is as ruthless and power hungry as they come.  He’s responsible for some of the biggest moments of the original series from the death of his father, Degwin, to his iconic speech at Gharma’s funeral.  The most interesting idea GQuuuuuX presents is the inevitable civil war between Gihren and his sister, Kycilia.  And yet while Kycilia gets a lot of the best screen time, Gihren is spoken of but never seen until the penultimate episodes of the seires…and is around for maybe just under 60 seconds before he’s killed by his sister.  WTF? Don’t hype the guy up just to end him so quickly?  Gihrren is one of the greatest victims of GQuuuuuX’s lack of direction and very rushed finale and deserves better (his eventual death scene can stay the same cause that was awesome).

#1-Comoli
Comoli is a character you might expect big things from given how often she pops up in GQuuuuuX.  And yet…she’s kind of just…there.  Comoli’s role in the series is essentially Chalia Bull’s glorified secretary and he doesn’t even pay attention to her half the time.  During one scene, he basically repeats what she’s thinking word for word as if he came up with the information on his own.  When you break it all down, Comoli is kind of just there for fan service with her cute officers uniform and that’s all…and that aint right.  Make her another conflicted guide for Nyaan, give her a romance with Xavier, let her take charge on the Sodon (along with the rest of that woefully underrated crew).  If used properly, Comoli could be another Murrue Ramius or Bright Noa, especially when Zeon’s self destructive ways go too far.  She’s more than just the cute girl
