Yesterday marked the 66th Anniversary of the
debut of one of my all time favorite superheroines: Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. While the Girl of Steel has had a pretty
healthy life in comics, TV and film, her popularity is on the rise once more as
Mily Alcock takes on the cape and costume in James Gunn’s DC Universe, having
made a surprise cameo appearance at the end of the new Superman movie in the
lead up to her solo film adventure next year.
Now Anime is no stranger to beautiful, costume clad power houses who can
punch holes through mountains but how many of them are on the same level as
Supergirl herself? It was an interesting
question I asked myself and decided to use it as the basis of today’s Top 5 Wednesday
as I pick out the Top 5 Anime Supergirls.
Couple of ground rules first: 1. No Magical Girls, Supergirls powers are
biology based for the most part though augmented humans can be applicable (also
Sailor Moon would hands down win). 2.
All applicants can at least fly, have super strength or possess extreme
durability. Much like Superboy in some
iterations, not every Supergirl has the same power set so I’m flexible in terms
of what these ladies can do. With that
in mind, onto the Top 5.
One of the few actual Anime superheroines on this list,
Tatsumaki is one of the most popular characters in One Punch Man for a number
of reasons. For one, her sass and IDGAF
about your opinion attitude is pretty awesome.
Then there’s her power set which is on par with most Omega level Mutants
in the Marvel Universe and is honestly one of the few heroes or heroines who
could give Saitama a run for his money.
Annnnd let’s be honest her overall look doesn’t hurt either with the
dress and short blue hair. She may be
mean but she’s definitely someone you want saving the day despite the destruction
in her wake.
What this super cute Love Hashira lacks in terms of being
able to leap tall buildings in a single bound or shoot lasers from her eyes,
Mitsuri makes up for in other Supergirl like qualities. For one, she was born
ridiculously strong, lifting boulders bigger than herself at an impossibly young
age. Also, kind of like one of my favorite
SG iterations, Mitsuri also has a penchant for snacking on good food like
Melissa Benoist’s kara from the TV Series.
Mitsuri also has that unbridled optimism and dedication to saving people
and protecting her teammates that makes her a top tier Supergirl, especially
with her sick gymnastic skills (and the hot outfit doesn’t hurt either let’s be
honest).
If All Might is the Superman of MHA, the Stars and
Stripes is easily the Supergirl (or even Power Girl in this case). Built like a wall and possessing all of All
Might’s trademark optimism and up beat/go get em personality, Star made quite
the impact when she first appeared at the tail end of My Hero’s 6th
Season. It was even more of a thrill to
see her in action against Shigaraki, using moves as powerful as All
Mights. She’s definitely a character who
deserves more spotlight, maybe even some prequel time in the My Hero Academia:
Vigilantes series currently running.
This Anime heroine from this oft forgotten classic was
basically written to be a Supergirl in and of herself. In the movie, it’s heavily implied A-Ko is
the daughter of Clark Kent and Diana Prince aka Superman and Wonder Woman. Because of that, she’s inherited their super
strength and speed and durability that makes her ferocious in a tussle. You put an army in front of A-Ko and I
garuntee she’ll plow through it like she’s a freaking freight train, especially
is her bestie C-Ko is in danger. This
Anime is actually chock full of cute Supergirls though it’d say B-Ko is more
Iron Man inspired.
Let’s face it. For
many of us, Android 18 is not just the hottest heroine in all of Dragon Ball
(could be argued but that’s for a later list), she’s a 100% true
Supergirl. Sure she started out as a
villain but eventually she came over to the side of good thanks to
Krillin. 18 is a freaking powerhouse
fighter, one of the strongest in the franchise, at one point even able to take Vegeta
and Trunks in their Super Saiyan forms and wreck them. Laser eyes, Super Strength, Flight. 18 checks off all the boxes and if you need
further proof of how influential she is to Supergirl herself, just take a look
at what Kara is wearing in Season Two of My Adventures with Superman and tell
me that’s not 18’s outfit from later in the Cell Saga?
