Part of the reason Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from
Mercury has struck such a cord with non Mecha fans along with longtime Gundam
mainstays is its main characters: Suletta Mercury and Mirorine Renbram. And while Miroine deserves a list of her own,
today we’re here to talk about G Witch’s adorable Tanuki Girl. Suletta has arguably one of the most
dramatic, tragic and full of jaw dropping moments of any Gundam pilot in the
entire franchise, and that’s saying a lot when she stands alongside child
soldiers, assassins and a bevy of youth with emotional issues. She’s had a lot of highs and lows and most of
them worthy of mention and honoring. So
as we close out my month long contribution to Gundam’s 45th
Anniversary (ignoring we’re spending the last two weeks with FLCL sequels),
today’s Top 5 Wendesday goes out to my Top 5 Suletta Mercury Moments from The
Witch from Mercury.
Suletta’s first official duel at Astacassia is pivotal
for establishing her way of thinking and the creed she lives by. “Run away gain one. Move forward gain two.” Prospera Mercury might not be Mother of the
Year by any stretch but that wisdom is pretty solid. It’s these words that carry Suletta through
the entirety of the show, even when the one who gave her these words discards
her. With that said, the push these
words give Suletta to take down Guel in their first of many duels is nothing
short of epic. Granted it has the added
bonus of incredible music and visuals signaling to all that Suletta Mercury and
the Gundam Aeriel were here and they were here to stay.
While they started off as adversaries, Suletta and Guel
grew to me much better friends by the end of G Witch. Guel fell for Suletta pretty early on after
she started to unintentionally humble him out a bit. He remains one of her strongest defenders and
supporters and I really think if Miorine wasn’t her main love interest, Suletta
and Guel could have been a thing. Even
so, Guel understands Suletta’s deep love for Miorine and proves it by allowing
her to win Miroine back with a duel, but not with Mobile Suits. The fencing match is a fun call back to the
original Gundam series when Amuro and Char had a similar duel. It also shows that Suletta is pretty capable
of this level of combat without a Mobile Suit.
Poor Guel, he may not get the girl but he’s got her friendship and
respect, that’s plenty for both of them.
The way Prosepera manipulates Suletta throughout G Witch
is sickening. Clone or no clone, Suletta
is just as special a girl as Eri but Prosepera is so near sighted she cant see
Suletta as nothing more than a disposable pawn.
It’s even funnier that after all the hell she puts Suletta through that
she thinks she can ask Suletta to do any favor for her as if nothing has
changed. So when Suletta calmly tells
her “No” it’s a helluva moment. Even the
nearly unshakable Char Clone cant hide the stammer and subtle disbelief that
her unwavering disciple has just told her she wasn’t going to take an order
from mommy dearest. It’s the moment that
completes Suletta’s evolution from where she was at the beginning of the
series: tougher, stronger and willing to break down her entire foundation to
save the future of all Humanity.
I talked about this quite a bit when I reached this
moment in the review but you cant make a list of Suletta moments without
bringing this up. It was the moment that
shook not just the Gundam fandom but the Anime world all over. It’s not just enough to see Suletta splatter
a Human like he’s an insect with her Gundam, it’s a whole other thing to see
her happily extend her thick bloody covered hand out to Miorine as if this was just
another day for her. There have been
plenty of damaged souls in all of Gundam through various traumas, exploitations
and tragedies but this moment placed Suletta near the top of that list, maybe
even made her Queen of it.
Because of her eyebrows, Suletta’s face has been compared
to that of an adorable Tanuki, hence her nickname amongst the fandom “Tanuki
Girl.” By the time this hilarious moment
happens, Suletta has been through the ringer: Miorine’s dumped her to save her
from her mother, her Gundam has rejected her…also to save her from her Mother,
and Prospera’s told Suletta flat out she doesn’t need her anymore. The three pillars of her life are shattered
and Suletta is at rock bottom. So to see
her get caught raiding the fridge like she’s a Raccoon raiding the dumpster by
her Earth House friends is a much needed moment of levity and probably the
first step Suletta takes towards dealing with her problems altogether. Idk, I just love this image of her so much.
