This past weekend the Gundam World got a major
announcement for the 45th anniversary of the franchise. Not only did we get official word of a brand
new entry in the Mobile Fighter G Gundam universe, there was also added news
that new projects were in the works for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and After War
Gundam X. Needless to say, this is kind
of a big deal. After all, it was 30
years ago that G Gundam took Gundam into the realm of the Multiverse beyond the
Universal Century. It’s only right that
with Gundam SEED and Gundam 00 getting sequels that these titans of the
franchise from the 90s get the same kind of love. Since we only have an announcement and no
titles or ideas (save for one I’ll talk about), today’s Gundam Centric Top 5 Wednesday
will be looking at my choices for the Top 5 Alternate Universe Gundam Sequels
I’d Like to See.
Gundam Wing is easily the most popular of the AU Gundam
shows of the 90s and thus it has a ton of extra material that could be
adapted. I’m taking a break from whining
about Episode Zero not getting an OVA to focus on one of the trio of different
takes on what goes down between the end of the TV Series and the start of
Endless Waltz. Battlefield of Pacifits
is the most action heavy of these three tales with plenty of chances to see the
redesigned EW Gundams in action as opposed to Ground Zero and Blind Target,
which are more introspective thrillers than anything else.
#4-Turn A Gundam: The Multiverse United
In a series full of major highs for the 20th
anniversary, Turn A Gundam caught everyone off guard with it’s bold claim that every
Gundam Series up til that point was all part of one giant continuity. That’s right the Universal Century, Future
Century, After Colony and After War Eras were all part of the same Correct
Century. It’s a pretty farfetched idea
but a helluva one to be sure. I don’t know
how they’d do it but it would be crazy to find a way to see how this idea plays
out and look at the transitionary periods between each era. Let’s put it this way, I can easily see the
Universal Century somehow evolving into the Future Century more than the embarrassment
that is the Reguild Era from Reconguista in G.
At first I thought about suggesting a Gundam X prequel
focusing on the Alternate “What If…” take on the One Year War that led to the near
eradication of the Human Race. And while
that is a backstory worth exploring, especially with Jamil Neate as the main
protagonist, I have a more bolder idea.
As well documented and discussed, Gundam X wasn’t the ratings darling
that Wing was and was cancelled before the end of its intended 50 episode
run. As a result, the ending feels very
rushed and confusing and it’s easily the weakest part of the series. So…why not pull an End of Evangelion and go
back to that finale and revise it to how it was originally intended to be
shown. Maybe even make a Compilation
Film to go along with it to get people up to speed. Gundam X is a hidden gem in the franchise and
deserves some love cause people are missing out.
Now this one got me excited. This weekends announcement of a new G Gundam project
came with the unveiling of a design for a brand new, never before seen
character. Whether or not they’re
intended as the main character for whatever sequel is in the works, a G Gundam
follow up is long past due. The Gundam
Fight Concept of G Gundam is something that could go in a ton of different
directions and focus on a variety of central characters from around the world. I always wondered how the next Gundam Fight
would go after the defeat of the Devil Gundam.
Whether or not this intends to follow Domon again is uncertain but I’m
guessing our mystery friend who enjoys swords and pipes might have a large part
to play. It’s about time we got more
Rock Em Sock Em Gundams not related to Build Fighters or Build Divers.
When they announced Gundam Wing was getting a new project
this was the first title that popped to mind.
Frozen Teardrop is an official Serial Novel sequel to Endless Waltz. It follows several storylines set during the
After Colony Era and it’s successor period, the Mars Century. Some of the story details are kind of bonkers
and features appearances by the old cast and their descendants. Funny enough, a short video that plays like a
proof of concept was including in the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Collector's Ultra
Edition, which did make me wonder if this was meant to get an Anime
adaptation. That was back in 2017 and
with these new announcements unveiled, it might be time for the next generation
of Gundam Wing to suit up at last.
